ESPN's Baseball Tonight

First, if there is already a thread or post devoted to the program, my feeble searching abilities failed me as I did look for one and didn't find it - but should it exist, I'll remove this one.

Thought it might be nice to have a clearinghouse for discussion of the evenings program - kudos, complaints, insights and affronts.

I like how the highlights start with games in progress, so I can catch some good games on the Extra innings package.

I see the program lead tonite with Dice-K's shoulder and Joba's pitchcount - no mention of the incredible comeback.  Not unexpected, but disappointing.

But seriously, the "analysts" what.  the hell.

First highlight, Angels v. Blue Jays.  Matthews Jr. drops a bunt McGowan throws it away - Angels score.

Now, Chris Singleton proceeds to analyze:  "Put it in your pocket.  'Jerry' Matthews can fly and he got a great bunt down."

It was a good bunt, but Matthews was thrown out by a mile at third trying to stretch the error.  It would have been a close play at first, but flying around the bases he most certainly was not.  Neither is he named "Jerry".

Anyhow, see or hear something interesting on the show?  I'd like to read about it.

I've got it on

right now.

It makes me seriously hate this show when they show Manny lazily flying out in a Red Sox highlight when they haven’t even said a WORD about the amazing Cubs game today.

The only part of the show I like is John Kruk. He’s such an idiot, I can’t hate him.

Lets say Griffey gets an at bat for 600 at the same time Manny is still after 500

Where does ESPN send us viewers?

With that in mind, seriously how is Griffey not getting more love, I know he hasn’t exactly been hitting a ton of homers lately, but its 600 homeruns.

How in the world did Kruk get on this show?

Maybe he sold his soul to the devil or something, but how a goon like Kruk razzle dazzled his way onto the Extremely Selfcentered Pansywaist’s Network still amazes me. You should have heard him ripping the Cubs at the All Star Break last year. To hear him tell it, the Cubs were a joke, a proverb, a sign of the end of the world. I hope he placed his 401K on a bet the Cubs would never win the Central last year. What a loser.

It was 32 minutes...

into the show before even a mention of the Cubs game. I’m not saying the Cubs deserve to be a feature every night, but the team with the best record in baseball came back from 8 runs down today. I’d think that’s an interesting story.

I guess they were saving it for the DeRo discussion…but still. I’m sure someone out there in television has a better explanation.

I always feel

like the Cubs get supremely disrespected on ESPN and across the country.

It’s Red Sox this…Yankees that.

Just go look @ the ESPN.com website tonight. Dice-K’s on the DL (OK, maybe that’s worth a headline), Red Sox win in 13…big deal.

Yankees win (wow! MAYBE YOU’RE @ .500 NOW!!) on 2 Abreu Triples…

where’s the headline that says…Cubs win after being down 8??

WTF ESPN?!! This is why I joined this blog. Educated (well, most of us…Mike…ummm..), down-to-earth, Cub-loving people who understand the game of baseball and the intricacies of the Cubs. I mean come on…we all

When there wasn't enough east coast baseball news

ESPN wouldn’t shut up about Joba Chamberlain. I love how nobody really made that huge of a deal of theatrics on the mound until someone complained about Joba and then it was on ESPN for a whole week!

Anyway, I know that an hour isn’t really enough to cover 15 baseball games… but I hate how the highlights start in the first inning where the score is 1-0, and then they go to the next highlight in the 6th inning and the score is 8-6. Don’t tell me there were no noteworthy highlights between the first and sixth innings.

I maintain if the Cubs won the world series on the same day Arod stubbed his toe there’s be 59 minutes on Arod’s toe and the only mention “Oh and the Cubs won the world series, and how do you think that affects Arod’s toe?”

We are all waiting for that glorious October night when we finally win it all. Until then we will continue to cheer, never do the wave and hope.

ESPN as a whole is pretty mediocre

When it comes to teams that aren’t on either coast. I saw someone else mentioned this but, when Manny Ramirez high fived that fan a few weeks ago, they dedicated about 5-7 minutes of sportscenter to “Manny Being Manny” and they showed about 1 minute of Cubs highlights which included showing about 2 of their 8 runs that they had scored. That is just one example of the kind of favoritism and reporting that they do on a consistent basis

Is too busy losing billions on the Fox Business Channel.

What’s the matter? Isn’t the MLB Channel coming next spring good enough for you?

Of course, there you’re going to get Harold Reynolds on everything.

This is why

i don’t even watch ESPN anymore. If I want football news, I’ll watch the NFL network, and when the MLB channel comes out, I’ll be doing the same to get my baseball news. Each major sport has it’s own channel now and I think that will compete with ESPN.

The baseball channel...

... will only be as good as the on-air people they hire, and if they base it in New York - which is likely, because that’s where the MLB offices are - it’ll be just as “Yankees and Red Sox are gods” as ESPN is.

If you watch

what they have on MLB. com, they aren’t nearly as East Coast oriented. On the other hand, they aren’t really competing for ratings on those MLB radio shows.

And as far as on-air people, it’s Harold Reynolds.

Yeah, It's Frustrating

and I just don’t understand ESPN’s priorities. They are in business to make a buck and their programming is designed to generate maximum viewership to achieve that end. It seems to me though, that there are more Cubs fans (as well as casual followers) than just about any other single team in the U.S.A. thanks in large part to WGN’s superstation broadcasts. Perhaps their demographics lump New York and Boston together and thereby outdo Cubs Nation. One would think, however, that coverage of Chicago sports, particularly the Cubs, would at least run a close second to the northeast team coverage but last night Sportcenter actually reported on women’s NCAA softball before the Cubs were even mentioned. It is really a puzzlement.

All I can say is I’m old enough to remember when there was no ESPN or any other national sports coverage on television and radio featured only 5 and 10 minutes programs with Red Barber and Howard Cosell. I guess a biased ESPN is better than no ESPN at all.

And so it goes.

they’d talk the entire time about Lou being a good manager because he played in New York. Then they would compare the Cubs to the Red Sox just to tie in both of their obsessions.

The problem is

That ESPNnews has really stolen a lot of ESPN’s thunder. People used to watch sportscenter for equal parts highlights and entertainment. Now that anyone can get the highlights (or whatever else they want) on ESPN news, Sportscenter and their other non-sporting-events programs have skewed towards the entertainment side of things…which is much tougher to do, and why they have the biases they have (east coast/large market/Yanks-Sawx etc).

by berselius on May 31, 2008 10:45 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

further clarification

Basically, now that their focus isn’t really the highlights anymore, they have to generate their own content, which is much harder to do. ESPN’s take on this is to shade towards talk radio format, where opinions drive the show, rather than actual sports. PTI is really the only show that gets it right, mainly because they cover so many topics. Even though Tony and Wilbon get it wrong from time to time, they don’t come off like blowhards like the rest of the ESPN ‘analysts’.

ESPN is to sports

as MTV is to music. It all started out well and good, but my how the mighty have fallen.

I do like PTI though. You kind of get the idea that Wilbon and Kornheiser know they are clowns and are trying to entertain a bit. I do at least.

ESPN's been trying to clean up Sportscenter

At least, that’s what they’re saying through their ombudswoman. Though I still rarely watch, if I land on it while channel surfing, I do find myself staying much longer than I used to. Of course, it’s easier to do so when Sean Salisbury’s no longer on every 5 minutes.

A bigger problem

with ESPN than the “East Coast Bias” (which I admit is real but I think is a little exaggerated around here) is the “NFL/NBA” bias.

I mean, good lord, the baseball season is starting and what’s the #1 story on ESPN? Who are the top guards in the NFL draft? The Cubs are in first place and what’s the important Chicago story? Brian Urlaucher will report to mini-camp.

THIS STORY JUST IN TO ESPN: PACMAN JONES IS STILL SUSPENDED!

And then their endless prattle about the NBA and whether so-and-so is “Clutch” or what the damn salary cap should be. And don’t get me started on the freaking Knicks. They talk more about the Knicks than the Pistons. (and that’s East Coast bias.)

ESPN .. Feh .. posted on 10.2.07

http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2007/10/2/201159/091#2039907

ESPN is a wasteland .. of feckless partisan sports “coverage” and a self aggrandizing belief that it’s the greatest source of sports news since TV was invented. And they don’t give a hoot ..

During the last Boston / Yankees series, during one of the ESPN News 30 minute recaps, I did an unscientific measurement. I noted how long the announcers blathered on and on and on and on about the Boston/NY game that day. It was eight solid minutes.

EIGHT MINUTES of blab and gabble about these two teams. That is an eternity that ESPN routinely grants for worship of their Eastern baseball gods.

The same day the Cubs were destroying St Louis – the WORLD CHAMPION ST LOUIS CARDINALS – in their own park and effectively burying the Redturds in their own soulless concrete tub of a park.

The announcers dutifully noted this story after the 8 minute worship service. Do you know how much time they gave the game?

All of maybe two minutes. MAYBE TWO.

And then they have the crass gall to bring on Dusty Baker to pontificate about the Cubs’ mistakes during the disastrous Florida series. I don’t even want to go there.

I simply HATE ESPN. They are the 800 pound gorilla with diarrhea in sports media.

ESPN.com

How do you guys feel about ESPN.com? I’ve been working at ESPN.com for over 10 years now and feel like we do a pretty good job of representing all of baseball. Unlike the TV and magazine divisions .com was founded on the west coast (Seattle) and still has a lot of west coast people at high levels. Besides myself I know of a handful of Cubs fans that work at ESPN.com. We even have a White Sox fan or two!

Personally, I work on the technology side, so I don’t have much influence over what the headlines are and such.

I too get frustrated by some of the coverage of ESPN. I was stunned and rather upset on Wednesday when ESPN decided to show Manny going for #500 instead of the Cubs batting in the bottom of the 8th in a one run game.

FWIW, I’ve heard management say that they are hoping that the new LA studio will address some of the east coast bias issue.

Thanks,
Robert Temple (NOT Speaking for ESPN)

Bloated.

I hate all the bells and whistles. I hate that it plays video without permission.

When I want to check all the box scores for any day’s game, I go to Yahoo because their scoreboard is much easier to navigate and (mostly) text-based, so it loads more quickly.

Sorry, Robert—ESPN.com should simplify.

Re. Bloated

Hi Al,

I was referring to the fairness of the coverage on ESPN.com.

But I do agree with the bloated assessment of the pages.

About a year ago in a meeting the guy in charge of .com asked everyone to raise their hand who didn’t like the video on the front page. I was one of about 3 people with their hand in the air. I hate the videos auto-loading with a passion.

I do have a bit of influence over the size of pages. The slowness of the pages and the videos is something that is being addressed in a big way right now. Look for changes in the future.

For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
