Brian Giles

With all the talk about a power hitting left handed OF, I have yet to remember if I have heard any talk about Brian Giles possibly filling that void.

Granted he is NOT a power hitting OF and not a true CF. But I believe he can play some CF or we can discuss moving Fukudome to CF again. That would be the first question to answer.

Regardless, his current numbers .300/.398/.440 are exactly what has made this team successful. Solid on-base skills. Also, if I remember correctly he rakes at Wrigley Field too!

Maybe we should start a "Free Brian Giles" campaign to get his out of the Titanic which is the San Diego Padres.

Am I being redundant here? DId I miss a discussion of Giles elsewhere? Thoughts?

Away from PetCo

.365 .461 .521 .982 That is huge! Course he is making almost 10 mil this year,

"Only" 9 mil? Umm, we value $ very differently

"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."

by californiachicagoan on May 31, 2008 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

In today's market...

it is “only” 9 mil…Take a look around: Fukudome & Jose Guillen = $12 mil, Damon = $13 mil, Bill Hall = $6….

It is also just an option…not saying we should pick it up if he were acquired, although I would think he might make that a condition…

Although...

I have never and probably will never see $9 mil in my lifetime….BTW where in CA are you? I am in the OC – Fullerton. Another IL transplant here.

Piniella

has already said that he’s not moving Fukudome, and I think that’s wise.

Randy Winn is a center fielder. He’s a switch hitter. He’s hitting .299/.347/.454 this year.

I’m not saying get Randy Winn. But I am saying he’s a much better choice than Brian Giles.

Randy Winn may not be bad

What other veteran besides Jim Edmonds are on this team?

As a lefty

.273 .329 .406 .735. Which is better than Edmonds ro Pie, but not exactly amazing.

Please

let’s leave our RF where he wants to play and happens to be one of the best defensive RF in the league at this point. I am not worried as much about Johnson and Edmonds/Pie. Let’s get a pitcher if we want something.

Brian Giles is a waste of a bench spot IMHO.

Calm down.

by Kinky Reggae on May 31, 2008 3:53 PM CDT reply actions

No thank you.

Giles is 37, has no power left, and the last time he played CF on a more than occasional basis was 2001.

Why is everyone wanting to add players to this team? Has no one noticed the Cubs are 15 games over .500 and on a seven-game winning streak?

I say again: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

But one should also say

we should not stop looking for ways to improve either….sure things ain’t broke now but it is only the end of May…I just thought about Giles today, but I am also one who thinks that pitching is a bigger need…

dont want giles

but i read an interesting idea from a blogger for the royals in a link on mlbtraderumors. Says pie and cedeno for dejesus, german (a utility infielder), and a pitching prospect. might not be a bad idea for a team in the race this year and need a cf.

by cubsmania on May 31, 2008 4:48 PM CDT reply actions

Hell no.

Pie, Hill, Cedeno for Grienke / DeJesus would be the only thing i would take from them.

by Unique on May 31, 2008 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I would take that too

just said it was an interesting thought…..dejesus would be a decent cf to have to fill the gap, and is under a pretty cheap contract for a few years.

by cubsmania on May 31, 2008 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

He's not the power lefty we want though

"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."

by californiachicagoan on May 31, 2008 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

DeRo would be a better

CF than Brian Giles at this stage of Giles’s career. For that matter, Marcus Giles would be better defensively. His bat, though, is RH and on a seemingly permanent hiatus.

In the honorable sound of coach Lovie Smith

“Kosuke Fukudome is our right fielder”.

Thanks, but no thanks. And contrary to popular opinion, the most popular word heard in a whore-house is, “Next!” Meaning, next suggestion…that is after (if) Edmonds fails.

The Cubs still need to continue their evaluation of Edmonds. Is it ideal right now? Likely not, however…..getting a guy that could kind-of fill a position that is already WELL taken care of, doesn’t accomplish much.

Can we get past this whole “Edmonds sucks” thing for another couple weeks? It’s LOU running the show now, we’re no longer at Camp Dusty.

by blackhawk24 on May 31, 2008 5:15 PM CDT reply actions

Which position is well taken care of?

I hope you dont mean the lefty half of our CF platoon. One good game with wind howling out does not indicate that Edmonds is or will be a good bat.

"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."

by californiachicagoan on May 31, 2008 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm surprised...

With all of the gossip and media attention about Lou wanting some left-handed pop, I’m surprised the media hasn’t brought the name of Barry Bonds into the picture. I know a few other teams have, but I haven’t heard any Chicago papers comment on it.

For the record, I do not want Barry Bonds to play at all on the Chicago Cubs.

As for an left-handed outfielder, I know center is not our strong point, but we are doing very well and I’d hate to mess with the chemistry right now. Edmonds is a trial not just to see if he has anything left, but also with team chemistry. From what I understand, he wasn’t particulary well like by some of the team. Anyway… unless its for a pitcher, I wouldn’t even consider making a trade for a CF until after the All-Star break. The only exception being if it was an offer too good to refuse…

by TheHawkRules on May 31, 2008 6:23 PM CDT reply actions

It's because he can't play defense...

If we were not in first place and semi-cruising, then I would be all for signing Barry. I hate the guy, but why the hell not?

Clubhouse cancer? He made it to the WS once, on a team that had a few established presences to control things. We’ve got that.

Soriano- 2B
Fukodome- RF
Lee- 1B
Ramirez- 3B
Bonds- LF
Soto- C
Cedeno- SS
Pie/Edmonds/Johnson- CF

No Edmonds, No Maddux, No Problems.

by Kansas25 on May 31, 2008 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Negatives being...

DeRosa reduced to filling in at 3B, SS, LF, 2B….

2B defense.

And a decision between Theriot and Cedeno. I’m sure Lou would make the incorrect pick with Theriot, but oh well.

All in all, things are too good at this point to render a gamble necessary, so I’m not in favor of it. A June or July swoon….and things might change.

No Edmonds, No Maddux, No Problems.

no BONDS

Period, no reply needed

"Have You heard of the Boom on Mizar 5?"

by Grockcubs on May 31, 2008 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Bonds can only play LF

so, there’s no need for him here. The Padres should sign him just to put people in the stands.

Giles is a bit too expensive and the Padres would want way too much for him. Also, I believe Giles has veto power over a trade. He’s with the Pads because he wants to play at home. He’s halfway in a rocking chair. He’d lose his tan.

Giles won’t be coming here. If he wanted to, He had the chance when he was re-signed by the Pads—I believe the Cubs offered him a similar deal.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on May 31, 2008 8:02 PM CDT reply actions

Also, AL --

Giles’ lack of power is the Petco Effect. LH batters are screwed, as you know. Adrian Gonzalez’s # would be far better than they are now, if he was elsewhere. Ironically, the stupid Padres’ best player is a LH slugger – the type of player they don’t need.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on May 31, 2008 8:05 PM CDT reply actions

Not going to happen

Brian Giles has WAY to big a contract. $10 million this year plus a fat option for next year. No thanks. Either Jim Edmonds works out in tandem with Reed Johnson or Jim Hendry can go pluck from the bargain bin again. We don’t need star caliber talent in CF. Just a veteran or two who can get the job done reasonably decent.

Any buying is going to be for starting pitching. We NEED another starting pitcher desperately if we are to have a special season.

Agree

If the Cubs make a move in the market it should be a starter. The Cubs score, the rotation at his point is or has been average outside Demp and Z

"Have You heard of the Boom on Mizar 5?"

by Grockcubs on May 31, 2008 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

The rotation

The rotation is Zambrano, the overachieving Dempster and three number five types in Lilly (he’s devolving into Marquis territory), Gallagher (I like his upside a great deal but he is just a rookie) and Marquis (augh). That’s simply not good enough for a team that is gunning for a World Series in 2008. I’m convinced Hendry WILL make a big acquisition by July 31st. He might have to give up an awful lot. But this is a special season. The Cubs have their best chance for World Series glory in very many years. Hendry needs to pull out all the stops. I think he will.

Granted, Lilly's last outing was horrid...

...but to say “he’s devolving into Marquis territory” is simply ridiculous.

I say we dong mess with this team.

its rediculous to expect a line-up where u expect everyone to get a hit. the chemistry is sooooo good right now, everyone has their role.
if we do anything, i say we get rid of marquis and get a #5. if we just get a 5th starter and keep marquis on the team, hes gonna piss and moan.
