An interesting stat for someone to look up...
- of bunts attempted or successful by the Cubs in comparison to rest of the league… seems like we never bunt.

Cubs have 21 bunt attempts on the season...
...with 3 hits and 13 SH.
In the NL this season there have been 357 bunt attempts, 210 SH, 50 hits and 11 reached on error.

Wow so we are right on (a little below) par with the rest of the league
357/16 = 22.3
210/16 = 13.1
50/16 = 3.1

Miller and Morgan
IMO they’re fine. The morgan bitterness gets me but overall I don’t mind them.
OK… can someone please explain why Jason Marquis is still in the rotation when there are far better options?

BTW, I am now officially SOS-SIck of Soriano.

If there was ever any doubt...
that Soriano leading off is a bad move, it’s enough that Joe Morgan thinks it’s the right one. To compare Soriano to Bobby Bonds (as Lou did) or to Tony Gwynn (as Morgan did) is heresy. And then Morgan says he is for Soriano leading off because he thinks players should hit where they can do the most for the team. Huh?

Question:
Friday’s game Len Kasper said that TV stations cant have radar guns for TV presentations at Busch Stadium
Why does ESPN and Fox have the radar gun?

I blame it on the media regarding Soriano
Even when we were winning games, we were asked about Soriano and what to do with him when he returns. Knowing the mentality of Soriano, it has to affect him. He hit an all-time low on Friday, and aside from the HR, hasn’t been able to recover. Something has to be done with him whether its a psychiatrist or a sit down with Lou.

none of those were mentioned a year ago now.
A loss here and there will happen.
And it could be worse – as in a 5 game skid like the southsiders…

Even though 3 of the 4 AB’s were outs, Cedeno’s was the only one that didn’t last 7 pitches.

I don't sit around the computer all night
And I wasn’t around it for the last three losses prior to this one. And instead of being around it the next three nights, I’ll be in Cincinnati at the games.
I’ll give you the rest of my weekly schedule later, if that’s OK.

As usual, you wildly miss the point
and implicitly mount the “mother’s basement” MSM meme. Well done. Enjoy the games. Great American Ballpark is a great place to watch a game, the food is pretty good, and the Cubs usually score some runs up there.
I’ll pass on being kept abreast of your schedule. It might make me feel inadequate.

Just pointing out the timing
And not saying I’m only here when the Cubs lose. It does seem like there are a lot of ledge-jumpers here who only show up in those circumstances. (Not that you’re one of those.) And you can have your laptop in your living room while you’re watching, I guess, but I don’t have one.
I’ve been to GABP before and enjoyed it very much. Thanks for the good wishes. Let’s agree on getting some Cubs victories there, OK?

I could see 2 of 3.
Cueto’s been struggling, and the Cub hit Harang well last time out, but Volquez is dealing. He does walk a few, though, so maybe with some patience and timely hitting, the Cub can plate a few and win.

Can’t remember what happened when they saw Volquez in Chicago, but I liked what I saw from him. Looks like the Rangers just hate good pitching, or else why would they have traded him?

The real problem is
In each of the last three series, the Cubs have lost the “50-50” game, in rough ways. (By 50-50, I mean the game in the series that could have gone either way.)
In Washington, it was the first-game loss on the Nieves homer. Vs. Milwaukee, it was the blown save in the series finale. In this series, it was the first game, thanks to Soriano’s buffoonery in left field.
These things tend to even out.
by Not Bruce Froemming on May 4, 2008 9:54 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
You're right Bruce...
however, I believe in most of these losses, the team has gotten – what – 3, 4, 5 hits in a game.
The “magic number” so far is 4-5 runs for a W.
by The E-Man on May 4, 2008 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Seems right, E-Man
Fewer runs than that and it’s usually a loss. Which seems odd, considering how decent (by and large) the starting pitching has been.
by Not Bruce Froemming on May 4, 2008 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not too worried yet
The at-bats have been much better and the offense seems to have something going every inning, just a matter of getting the timely hits, also the starting pitching must improve and with lieber now in the rotation i believe it will, hopefully we can get marquis out soon enough

Plays Into
the hands of guys like LaRussa, who will stoop to anything to get a team’s best hitter out of the lineup. Until you plug one of their guys in retaliation and force THEM to miss a key series, you’ll keep being the other team’s biotch.
by SecondSon on May 4, 2008 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
This is isn't about
“being the other team’s biotch”; it’s about playing the game with a little dignity. Just becasue Larussa refuses to do so, doesn’t mean everyone else should.

Plus, It's True
This isn’t kiddie league where everyone gets a ribbon. You’re out there to WIN – and if some coward punks you, do it back and give them a taste of their own medicine. They’ll turn tail so quick it’ll make your head spin.
by SecondSon on May 4, 2008 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's not true.
Good Lord. The team that score more runs than their opponent wins and that has nothing to do with nice guys and assholes. It has to do with pitching and hitting. Bottom line. All the rest is pie-in-the-sky psychobabble.

Meh.
I’m not worried about it. I don’t think the pitch that hit Rammy was on purpose and it doesn’t seem like Lou is really into this beanball bullcrap.

Maybe
when Eyre comes back we can bring Marshall back in the lineup and put Marquis in Lieber’s old role. I think thats were he is best suited as the long man in a 1-3 inning spot when where in a jam or need someone to mop up innings to save pen in a lobsided game

Shake it up baby...
Dome bats first, Theriot sits, Onedec plays ss, straight platoon in cf with RJ and Felix, Fonty and Riot platoon 2b when DeRo moves to another position. And Gallagher in and Marquis out.

I'd rather se Dome 1st, Derosa second

yup...Dome only has 13rbis in the 5th spot.
...great OBP but you need your 5th hitter to drive in more runs.
Felix Pie must play everyday!

I like that too
That would work for me. Where would you bat Sori? 5th?

Soto 5th and Sori 6th

Yeah
That would work for me. Or, bat Sori 9th and tell him it’s the new leadoff, and all the cool guys are doing it now.

That is baseball
we lost first series to Cards last year at home and still went 11-5 vs the cards which meant we were 10-3 the rest of the way, we lost all 6 to Marlins last year, and we did not really beat up on Houston or Pitt to after break. Stretches like these happen to every team its just important to minimize them & get out of them as quick as we can
by Mikey06 on May 4, 2008 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't like to lose
But the Brewers are a good team and the Cardinals might be better than we think.
It’s a long season. We’ll know more by Memorial Day, I suspect.
by Not Bruce Froemming on May 4, 2008 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think the pitching injuries
currently piling up for the Brewers have put a real dent in their chances, but that offense can always score runs. The Cardinals are a real paper tiger, though. No way these pitchers keep doing this (thought Wellemeyer was less than spectacular tonight), and I’m sorry, but Ryan Ludwick and Skip Schumaker can’t carry a team. If they build a significant lead, though, it’ll be a task to make it up.

if it seems like im blowing up, i just hate getting crap loads of heat from Cards/brewers/white sox fans. No, i dont think the season is over or anything stupid like that. I would just really like to start winning some series again.

They will.
Thing in baseball move in cycles. The Cubs are in a rough patch, is all, They’ll come around, and that Cincy bandbox is a good place to get a struggling offense back on track.

It's
frustrating because down three we had the bases loaded with none out and our two best hitters in the lineup to hit and we got 1run on a sac fly, and then DeRosa was his usual self in clutch spots—his bat nowhere to be found

Bottom line
Pujos comes through, Lee does not. Marquis should not be in the rotation, can’t get Iztuis out or Kenendy, What Marquis gives up 12 base runners in 5 1/3,. nice work.
But it is all Soriano's fault, always is.

DLee
had a rare bad night. Why wave at the 1-0 pitch, when he’s been struggling with the zone? Not a hitters pitch. He didn’t seem to have any quality AB’s tonight. Ditto Dome and DeRosa can’t get clutch hits. He just can’t. I’d hit him 2nd myself. I’d love to know his stats with runner on 3rd & less than 2 out. Must be pretty bad.
Soriano should hit 5th. Period.

We'll Be OK...IF
Lou doesn’t hesitate to revise the batting order and someone else takes Marquis’ spot.

Miller and Morgan
Were horrible, I think it was the 2nd or 3rd inning that they spent the entire inning talking about Matsui and Ichiro. They really spent the entire game talking about pujols and other players in the league that were not currently on the field. Why even have them there if they aren’t going to talk about the game thats being played right in front of them?

How about the fact that it was one big Yankees/Red Sox/Pujols lovefest with mispronunciation of Cub names and the graphics crew seemed to care even less with the constant Angels/Tigers display on the box score..

The Cubs can't win if D. Lee doesn't hit.
Another losing series against a contender in the division. That’s worrisome. I’m not going to talk about the Soriano effect in the lineup because I think the absence of A. RamÃrez is a bigger hole right now.

For the record.
I like Jon Miller and Joe Buck. Flame me if you want to. On the other hand, I think Joe Morgan makes too many stupid comments. So does Tim Mccarver. Sometimes they say something worth listening to, but not too often.
by Fraggin Judge on May 4, 2008 11:10 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Joe Buck sucks
Why he and McCarver are allowed to do Cardinals games on National TV is beyond me. Aren’t they both Cardinals employees? At least the Cubs won the game they blathered over.
Jon Miller was okay for a while back in the 90s. And I thought it was disgraceful that ESPN makes him read promos for upcoming albums and forces him to use hip stupid slang like “It DROPS on May 8th”...actually, I think he said “It will be dropped” which was funny and sad.

Good thing about tonight?
Wood didn’t have a melt down and we got glimpses of the replacements for Marquis. It sucks losing to the Cards but it happens, they are playing well, too. Now, I’d love to see a 3 starters go pitch 7 innings each game, clog the bases, and thump the Reds. Hopefully none of the Reds games will go to Wood, I just don’t trust him after one month and I want to sweep the Reds.
