Foley coming back to 'Hawks...?

Well, our buddy (not sarcastic) John McDonough is making more moves.  Dan Kelly was fired as play-by-play of the Blackhawks.  It certainly makes the room for Pat Foley, he of a quarter-century experience in the 'Hawks broadcast booth, to come back.  His contract with the Wolves expires after this season which in normal fashion, goes well beyond the regular season.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/hockey/blackhawks/933387,CST-SPT-hawk06.article

It's funny how things get done by a team when they hire a guy that by golly gets things done.  We can truly appreciate what John had done for the Cubs all those years now that it's a little more easy to see when he's doing it from 1901 W. Madison instead of 1060 W. Addison.  I know, I know, he's a marketing guy, not a baseball guy.  But he's part of the reason why the Cubbies are a national draw and in my opinion the team that has the MOST fans of ANY MLB team OUTSIDE their geographic market.

I think it's already a done deal but it won't be announced until after the Wolves finished playing.  No need to rush guys, let's get title #4.  I mean come on, it's been SIX YEARS since you've won  :^).  Speculation has been abound since the announcement of the team's first fan convention that Foley coming back will be announced by then.  There is really no more need for speculation.  I thought that a couple months ago when we discussed it here, now I'm sure of it.

It's ironic the move happens now in that the last couple months, every time the Wolves would play Rockford (they're in a 2nd round playoff series with them now, up 2 games to 1) Pat would actually refer to Rockford's NHL parent club as the "Blackhawks".  For several months earlier in the season he would say, "the NHL affiliate in Chicago", as if he still had hard feelings.  He's also gone as far as to praise plays by Rockford players several times rather than just stating it once and moving on.  Since he already knows he's coming back (IMHO) guess he should start getting attached to some of those kids because they're certainly going to be playing at 1901 W. Madison come October.

Now, does Billy Gardner follow him back and make a 3-man TV booth (can't jetison Eddie Olczyk) or does Billy stay at the AllState?  I also expect Judd Sirott to come back to the Wolves.

What a whirl-wind set of events since June.  Kane drafted #1, a number of other acquisitions and signings, Toews certainly captain material (he's 19 years old) kids playing well at Rockford (thanks coach Haviland), Rocky takes over, Pulford put in the penalty box permanently, McDonough hired, games start on TV, excitement back, TV contracts signed for next season, games on WGN, now Pat Foley.  Next thing is to sign Brian Campbell and Langkow or Hossa on July 1st.

I figured this was coming.

Smart move. The next smart move would be to try to make peace with the Wolves and make them the Blackhawks’ AHL affiliate. What a boon that would be to both teams.

Have to disagree with you on that one, AL

I very much enjoy having my local Rockford IceHogs be the Blackhawks AHL affiliate. BTW, they facing each other in the playoffs right now. Wolves lead the series 2 games to 1. Go Icehogs!!

I was under the impression

that at one point in time the Blackhawks approached the Wolves about an arrangement of that kind and the Wolves said no.

While that may be true...

... I’m guessing with McDonough in charge, things might be very different.

That's not how the Wolves are run

If anything, the Wolves would have approached the ‘Hawks (pre-McDonough) and oh, by the way before dollar Bill died, and the ‘Hawks (e.g. Pulford) said, “No”.

The way the Wolves are run is why I want Don Levin to buy the Cubs.

LSA

I’m rooting for Don Levin too. Perhaps the best sports team owner Chicago has ever seen.

I thought so too

What’s more to Blackhawk games then Wayne Messmer was, who hasn’t been their regular guy in a long time aka since the little squabble.

I forgot about Wayne...

...and he would be another gem to bring back to sign the anthem a few times. I know he is employed by the Cubs now, but you would think with the McDonough connection, they may be able to work something out.

His Cubs duties

are far less than his Wolves duties. He does more than sing the anthem at Cubs and Wolves games.

He WILL be back also. I expect that announcement by if not before the convention.

JohnnyM connections only makes this so much easier.

That little squabble was him being an

exec with the Wolves when they began play in ‘94. That’s how the ‘Hawks were run then, and for a couple decades before and more than a decade after.

Wayne will be back and that is likely to be announced before or during the July convention.

This is great news!

I have always felt that Pat was one of the best radio play by play guys bar none. I wish I was back there to enjoy the excitement for all the great things that are happening with the Hawks. I knew in my heart that once the old man died, things would be different. As much as he said he loved his Blackhawks, he did nothing but stifle that team and their fans over the last 30 years.

I am a big fan of the Wolves as well, watched them win their first cup in person. That was a game that was the most exciting game I have ever seen. Game 7 against the Detroit Vipers, 0-0 in the third period before we broke through.

I have always thought that the Wolves and Hawks should do a charity preseason game together. I think that would be the best for all the Chicago hockey fans.

That game 7...

two quick ones in the 3rd then the EN. Remember the pre-game brawl? Ex-’Hawks player (Steve Ludzik) played that goon Andy Beazou in game 7 just to stir it up with the Wolves.

As for the old man, yeah he did that. And his old man (Arthur) was responsible for running the Golden Jet out of town. How 6/27/72 is still clear in my mind. Just like 8/16/96 when the Pulford-led crusade drove JR out of here and all the ‘Hawks got back was that lazy Russin, Zhamnov.

Yup, we can thank the Cubs for p/o the ‘Hawks turn-around. McDonough will be key to the ‘Hawks success the next several years.

Outstanding move

Pat Foley is the best hockey voice in North America. He was born for the job of being Blackhawks announcer and it will be the greatest news of the offseason to see him back in the fold.

by MDBNIU on May 6, 2008 9:26 AM CDT reply actions

You could see this...

...coming from a mile away, couldn’t you?

Bringing Foley back, will create just as much (if not more) interest, than what they did with Hull, Mikita and Esposito and it certainly won’t hurt the TV ratings either.

IMO, Foley is the best play by play man in Chicago since Lloyd Pettit, blending the right level of excitement, good description and honesty. Chicago has seen bigger “personalities” in the booth, but none that could equal his game calling abilities since Pettit.

Foley is even better than Pettit

Pat Foley is an absolute gem. The best announcer of any major sport in North America in my opinion.

See, look!

A MDBNIU comment that’s not only cogent, but I agree with him 100%.

Agree that Foley is great...

...but I have to disagree with him being better than Pettit.

Hockey is a very difficult sport for a play by play man (especially radio), because you have so much action in a short period of time. IMO, no one was as descriptive as Lloyd Pettit and he had exceptional talent to be able to paint a picture on the radio.

Foley has much more dead time and is not as descriptiive in regards to what is happening on the ice. Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy, but he is really made for TV and he is the best in that venue.

Oh yeah

from at least a mile away. I figured nothing would be mentioned until after the Wolves were done with their season. As it is only the SunTimes had anything about it this morning.

The Foley / Pettit discussion can go on forever. Different eras, different game and certainly different personalities. We are blessed to have had guys like them and others like Pat Hughes calling games here.

Great move by the blackhawks

I can’t wait for next season, but the future of this organization, Hawks have always been my 2nd team behind the Cubs and its exciting to see them coming back with all games on tv next year. Great job my McDonough

Thumbs up on then return of Foley...

And you can have Brian Campbell. Is now too soon?

I don't think they were utilizing him

to his greatest strengths, though his first round series won’t make anyone think “Norris Trophy” if those were actual regular season games. I would think SJ would be one team that could really get the best out of Campbell since the GM there is my all time favorite Blackhawks player. While Campbell is high on the ‘Hawks FA list, there’s others to consider and likely cheaper.

Actually now is too soon. FA opens July 1st. The ‘Hawks have to very carefully consider how the kids playing in Rockford in the playoffs could affect their FA considerations. There’s a lot of talent at the ‘Hawks “AAA” affiliate.
