Soriano Leadoff?

Dating back to last year questions have arisen about Alfonso Soriano hitting leadoff. So far, Soriano is hitting in the high one-hundreds coming in at .177 with 3 home runs and 10 runs batted in. I think that Soriano should be batting in a lower spot in the order, or a place he can drive in more runs. WIth Reed or Ryan in the leadoff hole, I think we are more likely to win. Soriano will get his stroke back, but I think some changes in our lineup need to take place.

This has been an on going topic, but I would like to hear what some other Cubs fans think. Any thoughts?

Not to seem like an ass...

But this really has been debated to no end and we probably don’t need another fan post about it. This topic goes back to last year even, and a lot of people think Soriano should be batting 5th of 6th. But apparently, most of us won’t have our wishes come true anytime soon.

Exactly.

We really wish we had any effect, but I like what this team has developed into the past couple years. Sure, i wish we had a better pitching staff but its hard to forget the years of having only 2-3 decent players in the lineup and everyone else seeming to just be an easy out. God, why could we not have K.wood and Prior today!*

I agree

Soriano is going to be the leadoff hitter if fans like it or not. Personally I don’t mind it I rather have Soriano leading off then Theriot, and Johnson shouldn’t be a everyday player with Pie on the team. So with Lou unwilling to move Fukudome up in the order because he’s our only good LH hitter. Soriano is the best option we have in the leadoff spot IMO. The guy is going to get hot, and I bet he ends up hitting at least 280-290 with a OBP around 340 by the end of the year.

You know

I was just thinking what this site needed was another post on the batting order in general and Soriano batting leadoff in particular.

It’s been what, ten minutes since we’ve had one?

People have to stop

complaining about Soriano in that spot, he will be there for at least a while. Like it or not. Complaining about it or giving your reasons why you think this or that. Lou is the manager and he has said many times he likes Soriano in the leadoff spot, and with the realistic options being just Johnson and Theriot I like Soriano in the leadoff spot too.

I'm feeling like a nice guy today

I just noticed your a Rays fan, and prolly don’t visit here that often. As you’ve likely gathered that most Cub fans don’t like Soriano in the lead-off spot. I, for one, would actually like to see Ronaldo. H. Cedeno in the starting line-up and given a chance to lead off.

im not really a rays fan

my family is from chicago and I AM A HARDCORE CUBS FAN. I at first thought that I would only be on a Rays blog, hence columbusraysfan. I watch every cubs game. I know my stuff and simply wanted to see what people really thought about soriano being leadoff.

I'll go ahead and recycle what I wrote for GROTA on the topic:
One popular whipping boy for the Cubs right now is left fielder Alfonso Soriano. He’s making our center field situation look positively rosy, batting .173/.222/.320 so far on the season. No sugarcoating – that sucks like a Hoover.

But when you dig a bit deeper, there’s cause for hope, and not just a little but quite a bit. In early May pretty much everything is driven by batting average, and after one month a player’s batting average is a lot less stable than it is in, say, August.

Let’s take a look at one of my favorite little stats, Batting Average On Ball In Play. BABIP is a player’s batting average when you remove walks, strikeouts and home runs and simply look at when a ball is playable by the opposing team’s defense. A league average BABIP is normally right around .290. Soriano’s BABIP right now is .174. Which, right, bad. But we’re taking a look at batting average – a stat I’ve already said tends to be subject to a lot of random fluctuation, or noise – and removed walks, strikeouts and home runs, the three events that a player has the most control over.

When trying to predict a player’s BABIP going forward, his line drive rate is a much better indicator than his current BABIP. And Soriano’s line drive rate is down a bit so far this season, but still reasonably healthy at 18.3%. Given his LD%, we would expect a BABIP of right about .300 for Soriano.

Soriano’s walk rate has actually increased (very slightly) so far this season, and his power numbers are (slightly) diminished, but both would be acceptable going forward (and Soriano’s power should heat up later in the season). His problem so far has been that not enough of his batted balls are falling in for hits, and that’s not a function of anything Soriano is doing wrong, just a function of luck. Don’t worry about Soriano.

Can't we please get a ban on all Soriano leadoff posts????

This is the most annoying thing to see every single day. I know that I can just not read it but I still SEE it and it annoys me.

Not to mention, and no offense to the poster but NOTHING new at all was addressed in this. It was another of the same exact argument that he shouldn’t lead off.

This team has way more issues than this.

Calm down.

Here's the question

Who is really going to lead-off if not Soriano? Soriano’s due for a spike in production which would be good to have batting first. On the other hand, Cedeno and Theriot are due for drops in production. Reed Johnson can’t hit RHP. Soto and DeRo don’t have the speed. Dome is the only LH Lou will bat above #8 and Lou wants a LH breaking up the righties. So, unless we make a trade, who’s going to bat first?

by DGU on May 7, 2008 7:48 AM CDT reply actions

Fukudome.

n/t

by Al Yellon on May 7, 2008 8:07 AM CDT up reply actions

So, you're ok

with running 7 RH bats in a row? I think I’d be ok with it, but I doubt Lou is. Which leads to the next question – since Lou wants a LH bat hitting 5th or 6th, and since it seems like Fukudome would do best batting 1st or 2nd, are you ok with dumping Pie and spending trade chips to get a LH bat (when our offense is the best in the majors) that will force Fukudome over to CF?

by DGU on May 7, 2008 8:20 AM CDT up reply actions

I think it doesn't matter...

... as long as the OBA’s hold up the way they have been. If the hitters are getting on base, does it really matter what side they’re hitting from?

by Al Yellon on May 7, 2008 8:37 AM CDT up reply actions

It doesn't matter to me

but Lou’s the manager and it seems to be one of his driving issues in lineup construction this year. Worse – it may be the excuse for ending Pie’s tenure with the Cubs.

by DGU on May 7, 2008 9:13 AM CDT up reply actions

well, i don't think Pie...

will be in the lineup very much or at all anymore. So if we only have one left batting hitter… then no, it doesn,t matter where you put him, there will always be 8 other right hand hitters until he comes up again.
