So Lou has decided...
To not carry 13 pitchers when Scott Eyre comes off the DL, thank god because as Al has already shown us that would be a terrible idea. So now that Lou has listened to his BCB writers who is he going to send down to AAA??
I really dont see a clear person, mostly likely Fox. At least Pie gets to stay around longer, eh? :D
On another note: Good time to have a day off, hopefully we can come back energized and ready to have a good series against the Dbacks.

gotta be Fox
Unless it’s Gallagher, so he can keep getting better.
Honestly, today was just… I don’t know. I don’t think Z could have come in, rested, and made that game work for us.

Maybe Marshall?
For the purpose of stretching him out and putting him in the rotation?

Could be Fox OR Marshall OR Gallagher.
Glad Lou has taken our advice!

I hope he keeps Marshall up
So we have two LHP in case Eyre isn’t up to par….and after watching us play the last few weeks, we could use long guys like Marshall and Gallagher.

gotta be fox
feel good story yeah but major league pitcher—-NO!!
Go Cubbies Go!!!!!!

Well, Fox SHOULD be the one to go
since he shouldn’t even be on a major league roster but this is Lou we’re talking about, so I bet it will be Marshall or Gallagher. All season I bet the last pen spot will be a revolving door of AAA guys going up and down, back and forth every time one of them has a bad game.
That said, it’s probably better for Gallagher’s development to be starting in AAA for now, anyway.

It will be Fox
Marshall can be a serviceable long man and inning eater despite his general suckitude. Gallagher has a high quality arm and can be a huge boost to this pitching staff. By default, Chad Fox will be the one whacked.

I just don't get...
...you’re assessment of Marshall. He has some brief MLB experience. I agree that he probably needs to add another pitch, but he has decent speed and good control. I’m waiting until June-July to see how he has developed in the past year.

I suspect Fox will be DFA'd
The guy came back, showed he can pitch, but he really doesn’t have a role on this team. Hopefully he would clear waivers and accept a demotion to Iowa.

I predict
Cubs will call up both Eyre and Cotts, moving Marshall and Gallagher to Iowa to start. Gallagher helped us over a hump, but now Lieber will be skipped the next go-around. Since he pitched so briefly today, he can be the long man through next week.

Cotts?
Please, say it ain’t so, even if he does look like Larry Rothschild’s illegitimate son…

Send back
Gallagher unless he moves into the rotation.

good news
13 pitchers=way too much/not enough bench players. I would like to see gallagher get a start at some point in the next few weeks, and i agree that fox should go down. I just really, really hope eyre doesn’t bomb like he did at the start of last year – hopefully he settles right in.

DeRosa has a spot.
Second Base.
Theriot is the utility IF, comes in for DeRo when he’s subbing someplace else.
Mark has earned his starting spot. And he’s good at it.

Fox...
IMHO, even 12 pitchers is too much. Just goes to show what years of pampering has done to these guys.
by blackhawk24 on May 7, 2008 9:46 PM CDT 0 recs
Pampering
I don’t think Major League Baseball teams are in the business of pampering anyone. The improved strength and conditioning of players in today’s game has helped hitters more than pitchers. Pitchers have to throw with more velocity and movement on every pitch to succeed. Relievers are generally not as talented as starters; to throw really nasty stuff they have to expend a lot of effort on every pitch, and wear out quickly. Or they don’t have enough good pitches to make it a second time through the order. Or they aren’t effective in the righty-lefty matchup.
Relievers could probably throw more innings per year if they kept more regular schedules—not as regular as starters, but more regular than they have now. That would diminish the manager’s ability to use them situationally, but it might help them be more consistent and mean a team could get by with fewer relievers. I see where this idea might have merit.
I do see some potential snags, though. The first is finding pitchers that fit the bill. You only have so much money to spend on relievers, and pitchers with the stamina and depth of stuff to perform this role are likely perceived (perhaps misguidedly) as potential starters by some organization—maybe even your own. If these guys are moving in and out of the back spots of your rotation you’ll have a hard time establishing the consistency you need to make this work. Second, finding pitchers that will buy in. There’s not a general market for pitchers in this scheme, so these pitchers would be developing a skill set specialized to your team. They might not like what that means for their careers, and given how short a reliever’s typical tenure is, you can’t blame a guy for thinking that way. Third, dealing with game situations. Even if you avoid LOOGYs and have a deep ‘pen, you’ll have guys that are stronger than others. You want to be able to use your bullpen ace in the most critical situations (which sometimes are only a couple batters long) and lesser guys when the game isn’t close. The situations you’ll face aren’t predictable, so it’s hard to make the relievers’ use predictable. And I do think their appearances have to be somewhat regular in order for them to carry higher per-season inning loads.
That said… this is just speculation on my part. Only way to find out is if some manager is crazy enough to try it.
