Should Hendry still make the trade?

Now that Baltimore has secured their place in the AL East Cellar, Brian Roberts could become available. Should Hendry go after him? What should he give up? The origianl rumored package of Cedeno, Gallagher, Veal and Patterson seems too much. Surely Cedeno's trade value has risen since March. Should Cedeno be taken off the table? Personally I think our defense would be immensely improved up the middle with Cedeno at short and Roberts at second. The rumor was that Pie had to be part of the deal. Could we live without Pie?

These are all questions Hendry might have to answer soon. I know Roberts isn't 'tearing it up". But he is still a better leadoff man than any we have. He is better defensively then DeRo.

maybe

I think a trade might be a good idea, but we would probably be better off waiting until July.
I wouldnt mind seeing roberts at 2b. we could definitely use a solid leadoff guy.

roberts is hitting .263 with .351 OBP

he is batting .347 in day games this year though!
he makes 6.3 million.
DeRosa and Fontenot are definitely cheaper options.

Im just not sure. Seems like another trade might be a bigger need(sp?)

also Theriot is batting .331 with a .406 OBP.

If you ask my friend Phil, he is.

Phil hasn’t called the Baltimore guy by his right name yet.

Ah... to live the Life of Brian...

Brian: I’m not the Messiah! Will you please listen? I am not the Messiah, do you understand? Honestly!
Girl: Only the true Messiah denies His divinity.
Brian: What? Well, what sort of chance does that give me? All right! I am the Messiah!
Followers: He is! He is the Messiah!
Brian: Now, f#ck off!
[silence]
Arthur: How shall we f#ck off, O Lord?

He's not the messiah

Soriano should hit 5th. Period.

I hope it happens ...

I hope it happens, because that is the only way – IMO – Soriano will move out of the leadoff spot.

We need more left handed hitting and speed at the top.

On the other hand, I would not make the trade for Cedeno, Gallagher, Patterson and Veal. That price is too high!

Baltimore Missed their Chance

I’m sure Hendry will make some trades sometime… I have a feeling baltimore left a nasty taste in his mouth, and that the only way a Roberts trade will ever happen now will be if its so lopsided in our favor. That means Cedeno won’t be in the package….

by TheHawkRules on May 8, 2008 9:16 AM CDT reply actions

I think there is some...

...truth in your assessment.

I am sure Hendry has lingering bad feelings for being left hanging while the rumors kept swirling around. Also, time has gone by and circumstances may change Hendry’s mind on what his priorities are.

It could very well be, that a top of the order lefty is tops on their list, but a few things need to be sorted out in the next 6-8 weeks:

- has Cedeno come into his own, and will he surplant Theriot at SS?
- what is CF looking like after more time with Pie and Johnson?
- Will the starting pitching stabilize by July?
- is the offense inconsistant because of low OBP at the top?

These four areas will determine what Hendry goes after hard at the break.

Agreed 100%.

It’s way too early to panic and make a deal. The Cubs are three games better than they were after 34 games in 2007. There are things that need to be addressed, and MPH73 has listed all of them succinctly.

That said, I think this weekend will tell us a lot about the future direction of this team.

Orville Redenbacher.

Nanika Ga Okoru!

Oh, and remember, folks: Alfonso Soriano is NOT batting leadoff. He's batting first.

This guy?

Oh, you said ROBERTS. I thought you said ROGERS.

IF we make a trade

it should be for pitching. And only if we need it, blue-mike to the nonce.

I like this team. Put Onedec at short and make Theriot the utility IF, stop making DeRosa hop all over the field, and I think we’re fine.

by drewishdrewid on May 8, 2008 1:51 PM CDT reply actions

Nope

the offense is just fine. Were leading baseball in runs scored and OBP, without any production from the leadoff spot or Soriano even getting hot. The Cubs offense is only going to get better when Soriano starts putting up superstar numbers. Right now I think it’s important to keep Gallagher/Marshall incase Hill/Lilly don’t rebound. We need all the starting pitching we can get. Plus Cedeno has played very well off the bench, and is a good back up option incase Theriot drops off from being one of the better hitters in baesball.

Considering that this player adds a lot, including defense, yes.

Include Pie if you must, but not Cedeño and him at the same time. That’s too much.

by Fraggin Judge on May 8, 2008 6:36 PM CDT reply actions

Can he play left field?

If so, maybe they’d take Soriano for him.

DEJESUS!!!
