Trades
With the team sucking lately, including some atrocious individual performances, we all knew the trade talk would begin sooner than later. I thougth I'd throw some things out there before it go out of hand and Paul Sullivan started looking at this site for his latest rumors (just kidding).
First of all, there will be no significant trades made this early in the season. Why? No one is out of it yet. Take a look at the standings right now, the only team more than 9 game sout of their respected division is San Diego, and they're not talking trades with anyone yet. We were 9 games back in June last year, and we won the division. What would we be saying if we had traded our superstars in May? It just doesn't happen. If there is a trade, it's generally a bench warmer for a prospect.
Next, when the deadline does approach, you have to realize we won't be unloading any contracts. Teams that are out of it unload contracts. I doubt that we are able to unload a contract on someone unless they are still in contention this year (ie. giving Marquis to a team that needs a number 5) A team that is going to have anything that can help us isn't going to want the added 9 mil in salary and 10 losses that come with it. They are going to want prospects that can help them in 2 or 3 seasons. (Think Pittsburgh picking up Matt Morris)
The next thing you will have to realize is Hendry learned from the Juan Pierre trade. So, he isn't going to trade Cedeno, Pie, Hill, Gallagher, Marshall, Patterson, Veal, and Murton to someone like Baltimore for a player that might not be here that long. You also have to remember we need guys on the bench to help us and in reserves in case someon goes down with an injury. (Think Juan Pierre)
Finally, remember that there could be a few trades made in July that open up moves for us. So don't get to anxious because Hendry hasn't made a move by July 15th, and everyone else has.
I know we aren't playing that well right now, but we started the year off great, and as Lou said last year and this year, we're a team that gets hot when the wather gets hot. So I'm looking for a red hot summer!
And, my last trade tidbit is.......we will not be trading Soriano for at least 5 more seasons, and when we do, it will be to an AL team that needs a DH and can give us a middle reliever.
Feel free to add any other prerequisites for trades, but please do not throw out trade scenarios!

I also want to add....
This is the point in the season where an off day like this is where Lou and his coaches can prove they are worth the penny they are paid. You don’t necessarily need a new player if you can improve the one you have.

There WILL be a roster move made before tomorrow...
... because Scott Eyre is scheduled to return. That means a pitcher’s headed back to Iowa. It’ll be either Sean Gallagher or Chad Fox.

Given Leiber and Marquis
shoddy performances, I hope Fox goes down and Gallagher gets a shot at a start or two.

You can't determine...
...what you need right now, because that may change in 2-3 weeks after seeing more games.
When you play 162 games, what you think you may need at game 34, is different after game 60, and that is why most GM’s need to see their team up until July before they sort their priorities out.

Exactly!
When Al talked about the roster move being made that reminded me of when Dusty Baker used to say that getting Prior and Wood back was like making a trade at the deadling….problem was, they never came back!
Good call on the roster move Al. I hope Eyre is able to bring some stability back to the pen.

Im afraid your Soriano prediction...
Will probably come to fruition someday, lets all hope that that gamble will deliver a title before he really cant hit leadoff b/c of age and declining skills.
I wonder if theyd ever consider moving him back to second-he cant be much worse defensively than DeRosa, he didnt hurt the Yankees to much playing there either.
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

For one,
Derosa is not a bad defensive 2B. This is a myth that needs to be dispelled. Two, Soriano was a horrid defensive 2B. You don’t move a guy with his power out of the IF unless he’s an abomination o defense, which Soriano was, at 2B. He’s passable in LF, and his arm makes up for a lot.

How dare you post facts
It’s more fun for the ledge-jumpers to continually say everyone is bad in spite of over a full season to actually watch DeRosa play 2nd base. He will never win a Gold Glove but to say Soriano will be better is ignorance of the facts.

you're kidding, right?
He could be hugely worse than DeRosa, who is a pretty good 2b.

Soriano will not be moved to 2nd
We have DeRosa, Cedeno, Theriot, and Fontenot all able to play.
That’s a lot more middle infielders on the bench than Ward and Johnson as our backup outfielders.

Well
Alfonso Soriano will be a left fielder for the remainder of his career. It’s plain goofy to think he will ever return to 2nd base where he was a butcher.
Trades? Depends what the expectations are in the Cub front office. If the expectations are to be competitive thru September then perhaps nothing will happen. But if the expectations are to solidify our ability to make the playoffs AND actually do something in the playoffs??? Well then it’s obvious Hendry will need to enhance the pitching situation. It’s simply not good enough, even with everybody healthy.
Lou, stop being obstinate...bat Soriano # 6.

Good post
The only thing to add is that it takes two to make a trade. Hendry just can’t say to a team “I want your player so who do you want in exchange?”. Some people seem to think it’s that easy. This isn’t fantasy baseball.
