What Player would you most like to see on the Cubs...
What player would you most like to see on the Cubs?
Please explain why the other team would be willing to do that trade.
I have seen rumors that Griffey might be on the radar, but im unsure how much i would want Fukodome in CF.
I am starting to think we need another ACE. Any suggestions?
Are we content with our infield?
I feel pretty happy with our bullpen and i think Lilly will get on track

this obviously
isnt too realistic at THIS point. BUT in he FUTURE Scott Kazmir. He is going to get more expensive and the Rays most likely will not hold onto him for the long future. Like i said this this isn’t too realistic at this point

Man I would love him too but like you said prolly won't happen
That team is playing well for a bunch of youngsters. Especially with that staff they could have something going in just another year or two… even in that division…

A Guy By The Name Of...
Brian Roberts.
I’d stay away from Griffey, as he is reportedly wanting his $16.5 2009 option exercised. That’s a lot. He may end up back in Seattle.
Jacque Jones is gone, and I doubt Ivan DeJesus would mind this!

I think that after a little over a month's worth of play that it's clear now Brian Roberts fixes a lot of perceived problems.
I call them “perceived” because I’m not sure I agree they are problems, but I have a feeling Lou has it in mind to “fix” these one way or another.
Perceived Problem 1: Soriano leading off – Roberts jumps in right there.
Perceived Problem 2: LH bats to break up the righties – Roberts fits in, well, not “right” there, but he switches the lineup up.
Perceived Problem 3: Middle IF Defense – if you send Theriot instead of Cedeno in a Roberts trade, Roberts-Cedeno defense will be better than Theriot-Fontenot.
The problems people thought we’d have by trading for Roberts aren’t looking so problematic –
Expected Problem 1: DeRosa is our 2B – well, Lou’s already moving him to a roving utility role, and partially to get ABs for Fontenot, a LH “bat.” Plus, Soto has supplanted DeRosa in the lineup as protection for the #5 hitter.
Epected Problem 2: We’d have to give up too much. Since Lou has given up on Felix Pie anyway (basically ignoring the #s and his play), Pie can go into this offer now. Other than Pie and Ceda, all our prospective trade pieces in this deal have seen their value go up.
So, here’s what I’d offer up:
Pie, Marquis, Theriot, Ceda, and E. Patterson
for
Roberts, D. Cabrera, and A. Huff
I’d rather get L. Scott, but I’m figuring this is a Marquis for Huff swap of bad contracts and that Huff’s bat will be worth more off the bench than Marquis’ arm in the rotation. I know Cabrera’s getting lucky with stranded runners, but his stuff is still good and I’d like to see if the Cubs can help him get it figured out. When no real aces are available, Cabrera is a guy who you might be able to turn into an ace.

While he brings up great points, all this was known by the Cubs hence why Roberts was such a big target.
Once again: good points, not trying to deny that.

I do like the trade proposal
with the O’s. However Cabrera appears to be coming along just fine, and getting the idea of pitching. The Cubs might have to add another young arm in this deal. You are correct Cabrera is close to becoming an ace, and the O’s might be reluctant to part with him

Very good points...
my only objection is to take Theriot out and sub him for somebody else…not sure who though…somebody in A ball, that’s for sure. IMO, that trade w/out Theriot and omit Huff, is ok to me at this point.

Why would the O's take Theriot????
He’s in his late 20’s. Cedeno was the one in the originally rumored deal.
We’re not moving Theriot anywhere. Average 28 year old middle infielders don’t get moved for guys like Brian Roberts.

I don’t know if many people noticed, but the A’s and Marlins have some really good bat boys and bat girls. I wouldn’t mind seeing them in miniature Cubs uniforms. They’re young and have a lot of potential, though. I don’t know what it would take to get them.

Easy
Hanley Ramirez.
God know what the Marlins would want, but it would probably be a hell of a lot. But the one thing that would make this possible is the fact that the Marlins (probably) won’t be able to sign for any substantial amount of time/money knowing their track record.

I don’t think they’re going to trade Hanley this year, either, but assuming the Cubs have given up on Pie and are determined to get a LH OF – Hermida’s the only one I can think of that I would be glad to see replacing Pie in our lineup.

No, it doesn't.
I don’t follow horse racing, and I barely even know what happened there. My understanding is that a horse suffered an injury after the race and died. So it goes. It is a sad occurrence for obvious reasons.
To someone that doesn’t follow horse racing, this story barely contains information (in the sense of information theory). As long as humans have rode horses, horses have sometimes become fatally injured. In fact, all animals, including humans, break down under load. The case of horses is particularly difficult because the human, though training and the physical riding apparatus, has taken near-complete control of the animal’s decision-making process while being unable to tap into the sensory half of the nervous system. The rider making decisions can’t directly know how the horse’s heart, muscles, or joints are feeling. This inevitably can and has led to the deaths of horses. If human athletes with direct access to their own sensory feedback have pushed themselves to severe injury or death during competition, the rider of a horse couldn’t be expected to do any better.
Was the death of this horse in the Derby substantially different from the death of other horses throughout history (other than its being captured on television)? If not, there’s no new twist to the story at all. Perhaps it is cruel; unless the jockey or the horses trainers treated this horse unusually, then it is exactly as cruel as the entire modern practice of racing horses for sport. Even its sadness, I believe, is spread to some degree over the entire notion of riding horses, and even more so over the “equine condition”.
Was this horse beaten after its collapse? If not, it has nothing to do with the image posted. The imagery behind the metaphor, “beating a dead horse,” has always been of an abstractly brutal (abstractly because the dead horse presumably cannot feel the pain of being beaten—it is more a question of the equine and human conditions), yet pointless act. This is what gives the phrase its power. Our understanding of the metaphor of beating dead horses doesn’t change one bit because one horse died on the track, an uncommon but not unprecedented thing, although I might grant that it’s a tasteless thing to talk about for a while if (and only if) the horse was beaten after its death. Which I doubt, TV cameras and all.

I was just thinking the same thing. Everyone was talking about a left-handed bat to put in the middle of the lineup so Kosuke could be put in the front of the order, and I immediately thought of him. On the plus side, he could play center, so Kosuke could stay in right where he wants to play. They wouldn’t trade him, though. They always seem to need pitching, though. There’s always hope.

Craig Counsell, believe it or not
Although he bugs me because he reminds me of the gawky doofus who played bumbling private eye, Richie Brockleman, back in the seventies, the guy is a certified Cubs killer and would probably be worth five wins this year if he could be pried away from Milwaukee. I just looked up his numbers and they’re positively atrocious, but for some reason he always seems to deliver in the clutch against the Cubs. Therefore, it stands to reason that his presence on the team would probably prevent him from significantly contributing to at least two or three heartbreaking late inning losses. Since he’s also a versatile, savvy, fundamentally sound super sub type player who can play anywhere in the infield, he should be able to add another couple of wins just by playing heads up ball and competently handling whatever position he plays.
