Open Thread: Cubs vs. Rockies, Sunday 6/1, 1:20 CT
Colorado Rockies at Chicago Cubs, Jun 1, 2008 1:20 PM CDT
This one's going to be quick because I have a plane to catch this morning, to get to Wrigley Field by game time. Looks like it's going to be a gorgeous summer day at the ballpark, and a chance to sweep an entire 7-game homestand. Yes, win today and that WILL be seven in a row.
The Cubs are 35-21. There have been only 11 Cub teams in history with a better record over the first 56 games (since 1900):
1907, 44-12 1918, 39-17 1906, 39-17 1969, 37-18 (one tie) 1910, 37-19 1977, 37-19 1909, 37-19 1903, 36-20 1904, 35-19 (one tie) 1911, 35-19 (one tie) 1908, 35-20
That's five pennant winners (1906-07-08-10-18), a second-place team that won over 100 games (1909), three second-place teams that won over 90 (1904, 1911, 1969), a second-place team that went 82-56 (1903), and the outlier, 1977. We shall see where this year goes, but right now it looks pretty darn good.

Ubaldo Jimenez has been bad this year. Ubaldo Jimenez has been bad in two career starts against the Cubs (0-1, 8.31, and that includes this October 1, 2006 game in which he actually pitched well). He hasn't faced any current Cub more than four times; Jim Edmonds has a double (in 3 AB) and Aramis Ramirez a HR (in 3 AB).
Sean Gallagher threw exceptionally well in his last start. If he can keep this going, he will quell a lot of the "GETANOTHERSTARTERNOW!!!1!!" talk that's been going around this site. He has never started against the Rockies; his only career appearance was last August 11, when he did some mopup work in a game the Cubs were losing 7-2 in the 7th. Click on the link to see how poorly he did. However, no one he will face today had more than 1 AB vs. Gallagher that day.
Today's game is on CSN and on broadcast TV in Denver and at the MLB.com Mediacenter.

I also hope Gallagher does good. I don't think the Cubs need an another starter
unless there Maddux will wave his no trade clause and come back to where he should be… as a Cubbie.
Btw cubs.com shows that this game is on WGN not CSN.

This game dosen't even matter too much...
Do we want a 7-0 homestand? Of course. If the Cubs lose today and they go 6-1 that is still amazing. No pressure today. Feels kinda good.
Bleeding Cubbie Blue since 1985.
Of course it matters...a lot
Depends on how they lose…oir win. They’re leaving tonight and the tone on the plane could be based on today’s game much more than the whole homestand. Depends on what happens.
In the standings, the game counts like any other.
“No pressure today..” Right. it’s just a game. Not a “statement” game, like Friday’s.
Greetings from DTW.
Is anyone feeling particularly generous today and would be willing to let me borrow their MLB.tv until my plane departs? :D

i think this game is especcially important
We go on the road and we continue to play at a par level everytime. It would be nice to leave the city with a 7 game win streak, something this team can really strive to keep going on the road, possibly having this roadtrip set the tone for roadtrips to come.

let's hope
they don’t hit lots of ground balls. I like Hoff plenty, but very few 1b have Lee’s glove.

Hoff #3?
Really? I guess Lou doesnt want to mess with the rest of the lineup, but this doesnt seem right to me. I would have though he would go more like:
Soriano
Dome
Soto
Ramirez
Hoff
DeRosa
Edmonds
Theriot
Gallagher.

I'd still want another starter
Even if Gallagher performs well, that still leaves the rotation sans a #2 starter. They currently have one #1 (Z), two #3’s (Lilly & Demp) and two #5’s (Marquis / Galliebermarshallhill). None of those guys can step up and perform like a #2. And Dempster aint it, this guy can go a solid 6, but his pitch count is HUGE. Just look at his start yesterday, 5 innings on 93 pitches, yuck. He’s been doing that in nearly every start, that’s not a frontline SP.
It’s not easy by any means to just get a #2 SP, but that’s the one thing that would really put this team over the edge.
What numbers do you expect from a "#2" (which I regard a specious classification, but I digress)
that you think Dempster or Lilly can’t provide?
It seems to me that those around here clamoring for a ”#2” really want to make trade and get someone elses’s #1 to come and be the Cubs’ #2.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
Demp as #2...
I know it’s hard to believe, but Demp is right now a legit #2 starter. If he can sustain this all year, we’ll see, but as of right now you can’t ask for more out of a typical #2.
"Remember each day this year, where you were, what you were doing, who you were with, how you felt as the Cubs win their way through it. Because if this does turn out to be the promised land we have all been waiting for, you will want to remember, savor, cherish every moment..."
by CubsBullsBears on Jun 1, 2008 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions
Demp is no #2
This guy has been very effective, but his pitch counts are HUGE. You need a #2 to be effective, and consistently get you, at least, into the 7th. Dempster can consistently get you into the 6th and be effective, which, in my eye, makes him a great #3.
Lilly has been able to go deeper than Demp, but hasn’t been as effective. That also makes him more of a #3 right now.
I want to clarify that I’m not complaining about the starting pitching right now, but that is where the only spot to significantly upgrade exists at the moment.
AGAIN, getting a #2 isn’t easy, and I don’t really expect it to happen, certainly not until the deadline, if at all. But that’s the only piece currently missing, and they’ve been able to win without it so far.
by WittyUserName on Jun 1, 2008 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions
forget about pitchcount.
He’s getting the stat that matters—Wins.
Where are we going to find this mythical #2?

I’m sure that Hendry will visit the idea of adding another front-line pitcher at some point closer to the deadline, but he’s fine for now—baseball’s best record and Hill/Marshall getting ready at Iowa.
I, for one, am perfectly content and enjoying this run immensely.
Here here!
You almost forget how good Hill was last year at times. If he finds some way to turn it around the second half, he fits in the rotation nicely (for Marquis?).

Gotta love Lou on WGN's pregame show.
Downplaying expectations. I agree with him. I love all the omens (best record in baseball, possible perfect homestand). But, you know, if they just squeak into the playoffs, win every playoff series by going the distance in every series, and win the World Series in 7 games, I would be deliriously happy.

Sori drops the ball, but nails Helton at 2B
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
...while DeRo gets his hand spiked at second
Shouldn’t have happened if Sori keeps his head in the game.
Oh, Lord.
Now Sori is going to be responsible for Helton being an oaf. You gotta be kidding.

Feel any way you like...
I am not bashing Soriano by being disappointed that he couldn’t catch a fairly routine fly ball.
You're inferring that his drop caused Derosa to get hurt.
It didn’t Helton’s inability to slide properly did. Don’t try to shift the goalposts.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
Come on, Gary.
Are you trying to tell me that the ball would have been thrown to second if Sori would have caught it? Of course DeRo wouldn’t have gotten hurt if the ball was caught!
You're conflating correlation and causation.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
No, I am not
What CAUSED the throw to second was the drop. You don’t have the ball going to second if the ball is caught.
Yes, yes you are.
Thr drop caused th throw, but not the spike. The spike was a direct result of the poor slide. Two separate events.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
The Slide was a direct result of the throw
The throw being a result of the dropped catch. BlueSox is right.
Then logic is wrong.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
the spike wouldn't have happened if
not for the throw AND Helton’s bad slide.
Either of those things don’t happen, the spike doesn’t. You can’t say “bad-throw=spike” alone.

I'm not saying that.
But if you take out the Antecedent, the drop, then you dont have the Consequence, step on the hand. Fix the Behavior, Soriano misreading the ball, and you fix it all. It’s all about the ABC’s
I've no dispute that Soriano dropped the ball.
But it was not the drop alone that cause the injury. There’s a third party here involved, you can’t ignore that.

Lou should revel in the Cubs’s success along with us Cubs fans. By downplaying the teams’ play, he puts a downer on everything. I've been thinking about that
Think about 2 of the players that we were rumored to be sending them for BRob – Gallagher and Cedeno. Think Hendry would still make that move today? I gotta believe, no. And I am fine with that. Sometimes, the best trades are the ones that are never made.

Agreed.
I’ve never understood the need to “nonchalant” fly balls. There’s too much at stake on a fly ball. If an IF screws up, it’s an extra base. If an OF screws up, it’s usually two or three.

The only thing that I really wouldn’t mind is if maybe they threw a third guy in that radio booth. A Dave Otto (who I’m actually not in love with) or a Pleasac (though, I dunno if you could get him away from his ponies for a full season of color). I dunno, someone to help out with the color a little bit. I think it would be a big help for Pat, as well. He was better than Jolly Charlie.
Lou got better over the years. And by the time the famous (or infamous) Lou for Charlie broadcaster for manager switch was made ca. 1960, radio listeners got the worst of the deal.
Color
In the ‘50s and ‘60s Jack, and probably most announcers, didn’t have color men in the booth. They had a second banana with them to give them an inning or two of relief and assist with the Hamm’s commercials. As I recall, Vince Lloyd was Jack’s “rally specialist” backup before he moved to the radio.
Jack did
both the Cubs and Sox games. It would be a scandal to even think about something like that these days. But people weren’t as angry as they are now.
