Your Ten Things To Do On A Wrigley Field Pilgrimage

I miss home. I miss Chicago. I miss being there so bad I can sometimes get pretty down in the mouth about it. But I savor every moment and second I can be back home around family I love and rarely see and if possible, to tear myself away and finagle some way into a Cubs game. Lately, with things going as they are in my life, I've begun to wonder if I will ever get home again .. sometimes it's tempting to feel like I never will. That's saddening beyond words.

But when I'm there, it's bliss .. it's grounding .. it's truly a delight to be there among fellow Cubs fans enjoying the flow of life in and around Wrigley. I love watching people and things in general that go down on game day. It would be great to shake the hand of Lou Pinella .. to speak with Kerry Wood. Frankly, I'm quite envious of youse guys who can be there every day, shagging foul balls, watching the team leave the park and get into their cars, playing catch on Waveland. Man .. I would die to have the means of the Pink Hat Guy and be able to sit from one of the best seats in the house. It's tempting to sell a kidney so I can sit in the bleachers during batting practice .. or bid on a CBOE seat ..

I really hope you folks never get so satisfied with how ordinary that would be to you when you head out every other day or so.. it would be practically therapy for me for me to do any of that at least once. Enjoy it immensely, gang! How I love Chicago and the Cubs!

And while I've been thinking about that point, I've been wondering .. what other things would other Cub fans want to do once they get there? If you're a Chicago Cubs fan, at some point, some time in your life you simply have to make the trip at least one time to the Friendly Confines and actually experience the joy of old Wrigleyville and the park itself.  I know that there's a large number of Cubs fans who have never been and may never be there and that there's so much diversity among us but there are just some common grounds there (aside from boozing it up) that make the trip there always special, memorable and pleasurable. ...

If you could only go visit one time -- whether you were a long timer or had never been there .. what would be the top 10 things you'd do?

In this order for we have done it.

My wife considers a weekend in Chicago and Wrigley as a necessity.
1) Thurs AM get to a downtown Hotel, early check in (for nostalgia my wife likes the Knickerbacker, I like the Hilton Towers. 2) In the afternoon go to the Art Institute on her parents membership, Dinner in evening go to the 1st Ward and Roditys and OOPPA!
2) Friday AM go to Lou Mitchell’s get some double yoke and Milk Duds, walk back to the EL and go to the park.
3) Get an expensive Brat at Murphy’s before the game enjoy the feeling. Be in the park by 12:30
4) After the game go to Gino’s East downtown, for dinner. Change clothes and go to Jazz Bar with best headliner of the night.
5) Next morning (Saturday) Lite breakfast in bed, walk No Michigan Av., then go back to the park, this time simply get an Italian Beef/Combo at Eat and Run and bring inside the park.
6) Back to the hotel, unwind shower and get dressed go to a Grant Park Concert. Walk hand in hand.
7) Sunday morning Check out, go to Sunday morning brunch at Drake Hotel.
8) Take EL to the game, one last time…..

If I could go to Wrigley only once

10. Play catch with my son out on the street and get a bite to eat that screams “Chicago,
” – beef, dogs, pizza.
9. Sit in the bleachers.
8. Wear my glove and try to catch a BP homer.
7. Taunt the opposing team’s outfielder.
6. Teach my son to keep score.
5. Drink my first beer of the day and toast Harry.
4. Three words: Spinny Onion Thing
3. Sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at the top of my lungs.
2. Try to convince our outfielders to toss my son a warmup ball.
1. Take my son over to the player’s parking lot afterwards to try and get autographs.

This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

Your Son + Bleachers

Are you comfortable taking your son (i’m assuming he’s young) to the bleachers. I always wonder about that when I see some of the stuff going on out there.

by steinmer on Jun 10, 2008 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

He'll be out there for the first time this year

at the Peoria Chiefs/Kane County Cougars game. He’s only two, so he doesn’t know any better yet. I normally wouldn’t take him out there at this young an age, but this was a “if you’re only going to be there once” scenario.

1) Walk up the stairs waiting for the explosion of light when the field comes into view.
2) Listen to the organist, playing name that tune, and watch BP.
3) Keep score.
4) Visit one of the urinal troughs, and sprinkler sinks.
5) Run up the ramps to the upper deck.
6) Read the diagonal. Nite Games. for all the American League teams.
7) Feel superior.
8) watch as the Phillies put up a red 6 on the scoreboard in the 1st inning against the Cards
9) A home run, a hit batter, and a bases loaded double.
10) a beer in a bar before heading home.

I really like your phrase "explosion of light"...

...in No. 1. I’m guessing this holds true for most of us, but I’ll never forget the first time I actually laid eyes upon Wrigley Field (uh, the inside of it, I mean). When you emerge from the darkness of the concourse and experience that explosion of light and take in that massive expanse of perfect green, it’s really staggering in its physical beauty.

ironically enough, that describes my first and best memory of Old Comiskey

coming up the dark walkway right behind home plate, and then just seeing all those seats in the lower and upper decks in the outfield serving as a backdrop to that gorgeous green grass and beautiful brown infield dirt…

I love me some Cubs and Wrigley Field forever, but I am oh so very glad I moved here to Chicago when I did (1990) so I could see at least one year of baseball at Old Comiskey.

so completely in tune with the Vibe

it is something to leave the concrete, wire, paint and ancient grotto feel beneath the stands to go up, see this expanse of blue sky and a soundless concussion of glorious Wrigley green that catches you right deep down in your Cub fan’s heart .. the field arises like a vast sea dotted with players catching, hitting and congregating .. and that swirling mass of fans like a school of fish swirling around a bleacher tank, fighting each other for the home runs coming at them ..

God, there’s nothing like it in sports .. nothing ..

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

2. Find my seats
3. Take out my drink that I snuck into the park
4. Yell “Hey’re you go” (Hey’re is my word for a combo of Here and There) when the team takes the field
5. Get overly pumped for whichever starting Cub Im closest too
6. Get a sausage and a bag of peanuts
7. Continually wipe peanut shells off my pants
8. Go to the bathroom right before the 7th inning stretch
9. Yell “Hey Cubs Win” after the final out (hopefully)
10. Walk home, barreling through the lingering folks and drunkerds

Somebody should...

...do a vote about the top ten things to do on a Wrigley Field Pilgrimage, and post it on a page somewhere. I’ll be making my first trip to Wrigley, and would love to have a guide showing and telling me what to do and where to go on my trip later in the year. I’m sure others will also.

I’m also sure the Cubs will have something of the sort, but its always better to hear from those whose experienced it than corporate HQ.

I agree...I hope there are a lot of posts!

We are coming and only plans so far are Jersey Boys, Aug.1 and Wrigley Aug. 2. I’m sure we will stay in Wrigleyville the day of the game, as Tuscany was touted as a great place to eat…....I have a list already collected from here, HawkRules. If you want what I have collected, email me…. crazymountain(@)comcast(.)net. We are really excited to be doing this trip, my wife especially, as she has never been to Chicago.

From my recent trip in May

I can’t really do “top ten” things in any kind of order, but here’s ten things I loved about my most recent pilgrimage:

1. Brat and a pregame beer at Murphys.
2. Haggling on the street for bleacher tickets.
3. A leisurely “lap” around the ballpark to take in the atmosphere and the statues.
3. Surveying the field from the back of the bleachers for the first time and scoping out some seats.
4. Briefly saying hello to Al in the left field corner.
5. Two Soriano home runs.
6. Singing Take Me Out To The Ballgame with 40k strangers like we’re all family.
7. A Kerry Wood save.
8. Singing “Go Cubs Go” with 40k strangers like we’re all family.
9. Postgame beers with an old high school friend at Cubby Bear and Sluggers.
10. Doing it all over again the next day and then meeting up with 5 high school friends I hadn’t seen much in 20 years at Mullens and partying like we were 21 again.

I got to do this all with my wife, who is from Southern California and had never experienced all of this before. Epic weekend. See you in October!

My Ten

1. Ride the Red Line out to Addison, looking out for the ballpark when it first comes into view.

2. Take a slow stroll round the outside of the park just for the Wrigleyville atmosphere, taking in the Marquee, the Harry and Ernie statues, the ballhawks gathering on Waveland for batting practice.

3. Find your seat, hot dog in one hand, Old Style in the other, and toast your luck for being here.

4. Fight through the crowds on the concourse to buy yourself a cubbie souvenir or two.

5. Open your scorecard and scribble down the starting lineups ready to keep score. Check out the other games on the scoreboard. Listen to the organ. Chat with the people around you.

6. Grab your camera as the Cubs take the field for the first inning.

7. Give up scoring in the seventh when you realise you completely missed the last double switch and you’d rather stand up and sing Take me out to the ballgame than spend the stretch trying to get your card up to date.

8. Stand, clap and cheer as the Cubs closer works the ninth inning.

9. Sing Go Cubs Go loud and proud, catching the eyes of as many happy fellow fans as possible in the process.

10. Hang around a while after the game to soak in the Wrigley ambience. Take a last lingering look at the scoreboard. Turn to leave, vowing to return the first chance you get.

And of course, last but not least, if at all possible, somewhere along the line, drop in on the leftfield corner of the bleachers and say hi to Al.

You did almost all of those when you were here, didn't you?

by Al Yellon on Jun 10, 2008 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes I did

Over the three games I got to while I was over I managed just about all of those, though not necessarily in that order. And caught a genuine foulball off the bat of Ryan “Mr Scrappy” Theriot into the bargain!

I’m grateful to have had the chance to join you in the bleachers. It’s a completely different perspective from there, especially in the company of such knowledgable regulars as you guys. All in all I had a great trip and really hope I get a chance to do it all again someday.

congrats on the foul ball

I got my first “major league” foul ball this year when the Cubs stomped the BrewCrew 19-5 IT PAYS TO STAY TO THE END of the game. I got it with 2 strikes and 2 outs in the 9th. Still on my fireplace with a Wood’s signature.

It’s a great feeling isn’t it? I was as surprised as I was delighted. No need for any undignified scrambling under seats or anything either, fortunately. I might not have been too hot at that.

For my part

I can only think of one highlight that’s a constant of almost every game that I attend. I ride the Ashland bus to most games and then approach the park walking east along Addison. When I reach the last block or so, and the red marquee comes into view…that’s just a great feeling, every single time but especially on an unseasonably warm spring afternoon…

Also, I like to sing along to the old “Hey Hey, Holy Mackerel” song when it’s played just before the first inning. And come what may, the Cubs are going to…WIN!...today.

by LaddieRenfroe on Jun 10, 2008 2:54 PM CDT reply actions

FWIW

I live down the street on Kenmore and usually do a walk/run/bike ride after work to work on the beer gut. Anyways, my point is, that still to this very day whenever I do this it involves a lap around Wrigley——its never gets old, despite the fact that its very old.

I don't really go into the surrounding neighborhood much, so my entire list takes place within the Friendly Confines.

1. Take advantage of the early bird discount on concessions.
2. Spot fans who are wearing any team but the Cubs’ apparel. Shun them.
3. Confidently assert “I woulda caught that” during the pregame pop fly catching contest in LF.
4. Watch the Cubs loosen up, notice who is doing what (throwing, running, stretching), see which guys are playing catch with each other (Theriot and DeRosa, for example). Laugh at Zambrano’s antics in the outfield shagging flies. Watch the “ceremonial first pitches”, grade their performances. Observe the other team warming up also, but not as closely.
5. Try my best to ignore the people who are clearly not there to see the game. (“Stop standing in front of everyone DURING PLAY! Go stand in the back of the concourse!”)
6. Hang on the edge of my seat for every pitch. Track the starters’ pitch counts. Occasionally glance at the other scores around the league.
7. Stand and cheer for every Cubs run.
8. Shake my head at Marmol’s ridiculous sliders.
9. Express disappointment in certain moves (using Fontenot as a pinch-hitter, Cedeno being benched, etc.)
10. Sing Go Cubs Go at the top of my lungs and try to hang around the field as long as possible to soak it all in. Grab anyone’s forgotten giveaways (especially bobbleheads!) that are resting alone on the concrete. Go home happy.

My list

1 Go early and eat at Horizon Cafe on Grace and Broadway. 2 blocks north and 2 east.
2 A walk around Wrigley is a must.
3 Visit Harry’s and Ernie’s statue.
4 Stop by Sluggers for a quick beer. Actually I do that whether Im going to the game or not.
5 No matter where my seat is I always walk in under the red marquee walk though the concourse and go up the stairs to get my first view of the field from behind home plate.
6 Watch BP as I check out as many views around the stadium as possible. A great thing about Wrigley is you can walk anywhere you would like(except the bleachers) and no ushers are forcing you to your seat.
7 Hope and pray that the people around you are into the game. The games are always better when you sit around fellow diehards.
8 Sing the 7th inning stretch and hopefully Go Cubs Go.
9 Go back to Sluggers to celebrate.
10 Go home

I thing I havent done and I look forward to doing it later this year is play catch on Waveland. My nephew will visit in a month and see his first game at Wrigley and that is a must before the game.
