So what now?
Murton optioned up I assume?
Cubs cocktail: Add equal amounts of devotion and stubbornness over ice, stir and serve.
Why not both?
Lou was going to send a pitcher down for The Hoff to play interleague anyway.

Fox comes off the DL soon right?
so maybe he goes down and Hart stays.
"Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball." - Jacque Barzun
You don't use up a 25 man roster spot while on the DL.
And I don’t think Fox is coming off the DL any time soon.
That's right..
but I thought someone said yesterday he was coming off the DL soon. I have no idea…

Why Murton over him?
I realize that Matt is a good hitter, but Micah hasn’t exactly disappointed at the plate.

what about patterson?

Really Patterson and Fontenot are superfluous.
No team needs three backup middle infielders, especially if two of them can only play second and have the same general hitting profile. Patterson is preferable to Fontenot because he’s a better runner and can play the outfield, but we really don’t need the both of them.
true
i forgot eric played infield. thought he was the other one in CF. i’m stoopid. :-)

Because Hoffpauir is a first baseman, not a left fielder.
And seeing him play the outfield is deeply discomfiting.
I understand.
Still, it’s not like Murton burned it up defensively. Well, I guess we’ll get to see both of them.

Murton's left field defense was seriously underrated, in my opinion.
Not saying he was a Gold Glover anything, but he was solidly above average in his time with the Cubs.
I think his left field defense got underrated
because of his right field limitations. He is decent in left field.
by LT on Jun 11, 2008 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions
When it comes to catching the ball...
...he is better than Soriano.
Very few left fielders know what the hell they are doing out there anyway. 90% of them are there for their bat, not their glove.

Murton
actually plays outfield, for one thing.

I'd see Hoff and Murton get called up

Rose Colored Glasses
He will hopefully be back at the end of July. That means it will be like making a trade to pick up Soriano right before the deadline.
I know this ignores the fact that we will be without him for 6 weeks, I’m trying to put a good spin on it.
Keep in mind how long it took DLee to get his power stroke back after his broken hand.
and since I said “power stroke,” I’ll go ahead and TWSS myself.

Once again I say:

You're kidding...right? right?
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
Nope.
He is still one of the greatest hitters ever, and he’d come cheap – according to his agent he’s willing to play for league minimum.
I can think of several other ideas to try first, but if the Cubs can’t patch together an acceptable solution, I say at least look into Bonds.
got to disagree with you on this one
his cancerous attitude is not welcome and I don’t believe his production would outweigh it. for all the talk about Theriot’s fielding—Rick Reuschel has about as much range as Bonds right now.
by Shanghai Badger on Jun 11, 2008 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions
I think his defensive liabilities in left are a little overstated...
...especially if you get creative with it, maybe platoon him with Murton to give him time off.
As far as the character issues, that’s something I really can’t prove or disprove either way.
This is something I have yet to see proof of...
I have not heard of any players saying he was a problem in the clubhouse…just the media
Barry Bonds hates the media
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
...because Jeff Kent is the first person we should ask about "character".

Yeah, I read today teams aren't even listening at league minimum right now.
If you want him, he’s pretty much yours at this point. No competition.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
I've wondered how "humbled" Bonds would be if he was to join a team right now in the season...
...considering what he accomplished last year, and how every team has effectively blackballed him so far this season. The minimum wage thing doesn’t sound like Bonds’ forte at all, but if any manager can manage a headcase like Bonds, it may in fact be Lou…

He’s a bad defensive corner outfielder hitting .257/.364/.410. Might as well put Theriot out in left at that point.
No thanks.
We need – at most – a one-year stopgap. What the heck would we do with Magglio next year?
Why not bring Pie back up?
Move Johnson to left, put him in CF. Just speculating—Edmonds would be hard to put in play if that move was made.
"I think Hendry still has a few years to serve on his 'grand larceny' sentence before he can shop in Pittsburgh again" - ballhawk
You have to platoon Johnson.
You could do Edmonds/Johnson in left, Pie in center… you could do Murton/Hoffpauir in left. You could do DeRosa in left and platoon Cedeno/Fontenot at second. There’s all sorts of things you could do with personel on hand.
I'd rather see Ballhawk out there.

Possible trade targets, opposed to our in-house options...
LF: Pat Burrell, Jason Bay, Matt Holliday, Adam Dunn, Raul Ibanez, Frank Catalanotto, Chris Duncan (not any more), Jay Payton, Dave Roberts, Juan Rivera, Barry Bonds, Kenny Lofton, Reggie Sanders
CF: Coco Crisp, Ryan Freel, Willy Taveras, David DeJesus
RF: Xavier Nady, Brian Giles, Randy Winn, Eric Hinske, J.D. Drew, Ken Griffey Jr., Mark Teahen, ...Sammy Sosa
This list is from “our favorite website”

Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

Sosa's not interested in playing, last time anyone spoke with him.
He’s planning on playing in the World Baseball Classic and then retiring. Half those guys aren’t any better than what Murton would provide, and some of them are a heck of a lot worse.
I bet that's because no one wants him. My suspicion is he'd listen if someone comes calling, but that won't be the Cubs.

Who ever said Bay was on the block?
I think he’s too good of a player just to trade for 2 months of play.

The Pirates are rebuilding.
They held on to Bay in the offseason because he had a bad year in ‘07 and they wanted him to build up his trade value. The Pirates’ entire roster should be available… at the right price.
They're rebuilding? When have they ever been in contention? '92?

Actually
The AL is on pace to have more than 100 CGs for the first time since 2003, compared with just around 60 last year. (Still, 100 isn’t much compared with the 650 CGs posted by AL pitchers in 1974, when there were several fewer teams).
The NL is on pace for under 50, about the same as last year.

Of course, a lot of games weren’t televised back then, either. Which wasn’t terrible. A chance to enjoy Vince and Lou on the radio.

he was getting

"Very adroit in the outfield." - Lou, on Dome
Lou said this
before the game. He said he was coming up either way for interleagues, and that he was considering moving Dome to 2 spot, and Theriot to 9th. But w/ Soriano out now, I don’t know if that changes things.
Go All In and Enjoy The Ride.
I think
losing Albert Pujols is going to hurt the Cardinals a heck of alot more then us losing Soriano (even though it still hurts)

Soriano
I’m trying to see the positive here:
1. The Cubs did fine without him earlier this year
2. The time away will give his legs a chance to fully recover from whatever his problem was
3. The LF defense will be better, no matter who replaces him
4. Edmonds has been coming around lately, and should get more ABs.
5. Reed Johnson and Matt Murton can also do an adequate job
6. Hopefully Soriano can come back and be hot in August and September, when we’ll need him most
7. At least the Cards are without Pujols at the same time.
8. The lineup is very strong even without Soriano
I propose letting Theriot lead off, by the way.
"Hey hey, kiss it goodbye! That one's in Milwaukee! Man oh man did he hit it. Isn't that something?" - Lou Boudreau, May 17, 1979
9. Murton plays well for 6 weeks and ups his trade value to help get a starter at the deadline
This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

Have to object.
3. The LF defense will be better, no matter who replaces him
Hoffpauir can – and probably will – be a downgrade in our outfield. There’s no way around it.
Hoffpauir is coming up to DH for interleague right?
I thought I had read that earlier

Why do people downplay his defense so much?
He might not cover as much ground, but it’s average. And his arm is above average, I’d say. What the hell?
"I think Hendry still has a few years to serve on his 'grand larceny' sentence before he can shop in Pittsburgh again" - ballhawk
Um, he was a first baseman in college.
Generally you don’t get to be a first baseman as early in your career as Hoffpauir if you’re an “average” left fielder.
I'm talking about Soriano
"I think Hendry still has a few years to serve on his 'grand larceny' sentence before he can shop in Pittsburgh again" - ballhawk
Oh.
Actually, Soriano covers plenty of ground laterally. It’s going back on balls that’s his problem. Past two seasons he’s been comfortably above average – this year he wasn’t, probably due to leg problems. But you’re right – Soriano’s underrated defensively.
+1
I’d actually like to see Murton back up and playing in left, bat Theriot and his 400+ OBP leadoff, and let Lou mess around with Dome, Derosa, Soto and Edmonds in the 2/5/6/7 slots.
had the same thought about Soriano’s legs, hopefully everything will be 100% when he gets back

Lou Piniella Postgame
“It’s a bad break for us, it really is.”
“I don’t think (it was any carryover from last night), just an unfortunate thing.”
“They said 6 weeks.”
“We’ll see what we do. We’re probably gonna have to get 2 kids up here now. We’ll see who we bring up and what we’ll do. We haven’t thought about it. I learned about this about the 6th or 7th inning. We were concentrating on the ballgame. It’s a shame, it really is. Things happen in baseball. We’ve got a farm system and we’ll utilize it, but the story tonight outside of that obviously was the way Dempster pitched, 8-0 at home, Fukudome with a three-run homer gets us on the board early, we add a few more runs and it’s a good ballgame. Again, it was unfortunate, what can you do. You don’t want to see injuries on your team but even on other teams.”

On Dempster:
“He’s added some pitches. I’ll tell you what, he came to camp ready to fight de la Hoya for 15 rounds. So…heh. He was in shape, he was on a mission, and he’s off to a great start.”

Bullpen
Rested it the old-fashioned way – by letting the starter go the distance. Back a few years ago, the Cubs (and most teams) would get 15-20 CGs a year (This was in the 1980s). It meant the bullpen got a rest almost one day a week. Wouldn’t be a bad idea if teams today figured out how to do the same (Toronto’s manager seems to understand).

It might be a blessing in disguise
As said ad nauseum, it’s not like the Cubs are in dire straits for offense production, so Soriano won’t be missed (that much). And he’s been been running on 2/3 of a leg this season, hopefully that heals up as well as his hand.

KENNY LOFTON
Mentioned earlier, but didnt see it. Forgot about that. He may still have something. Hoffpauir for now, especially with interleague on its way. But, Lofton would fill all required needs. Another left hander, OF, leadoff. Desperate and cheap now.
Yanks-As
Normally I wouldn’t mention this at all, but the Yanks are losing 8-1. LaTroy Hawkins and Kyle Farnsworth have both pitched for them. It’s just like old times.
I'm getting extremely sick of seeing the Cardinals continue to win
That lineup even with pujols is terrible and shouldn’t be scoring this many runs
