Open Thread: Cubs vs. Braves, Wednesday 6/11, 7:05 CT
Atlanta Braves at Chicago Cubs, Jun 11, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
The Cubs catch a break -- and reading this makes me think of some Cub teams (1985 comes to mind) when everyone got hurt in ridiculous ways. Jair Jurrjens, a 22-year-old righthander who has a lot of promise, placed high on the list of Weird Injuries Of The Year when he twisted his ankle on the dugout stairs after Tuesday's game and was scratched from tonight's start.
Caveat: sometimes emergency starters like Jeff Bennett do well against the Cubs. Hope they've got a scouting report ready. More below the stat boxes.
Other interesting news: the books have been delivered to potential team/ballpark buyers, different sets of books depending on whether the buyer wanted both the team and the park, or just one or the other:
Potential bidders, pre-approved by Major League Baseball to receive the confidential financial information, include Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban; a Chicago group led by Madison Dearborn Chairman John Canning; and Omaha's Ricketts family among others.
(Emphasis added by me. Obviously, some buyers don't need their names ::coughMarkCubancough:: in the papers.)

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
You can't judge either of today's starters by his record against the other team. Bennett has a 1.17 ERA in 6 career relief appearances (7.2 IP) vs. the Cubs. All six of those were in 2004 when he was a Brewer. No current Cub has more than four AB vs. Bennett -- and that's Derrek Lee, who's 3-for-4 with a HR.
Ryan Dempster is 1-8, 5.61 in 13 lifetime starts vs. the Braves -- but the last one of those was in 2003. The only current Brave who has more than seven AB vs. Dempster is Chipper Jones, and he likely won't start again tonight.

Pardon?
Did someone mention…
...a treasure chest?
Nanika Ga Okoru!
Oh, and remember, folks: Alfonso Soriano is NOT batting leadoff. He's batting first.
You know, instead of burying this treasure
couldn’t we just, you know, spend it?

Apart from Rich Hill...
This news makes me pretty grateful for our relative health thus far.
With Cubs legend Ron Santo...
Hill Lost in Memphis Today
Hill walked six, gave up three hits, and allowed four runs (three earned) in 4 IP. He struck out 6 and gave up a 2-run HR to the Redbirds’ Brian Barden. He threw 101 pitches (53 strikes). A high pitch total for just 4 innings. Iowa lost to Memphis, 5-2. The I-Cubs are still 5 games up on Memphis.
"The big possum walks late." - Harry Caray
Pretty disappointing
I thought for sure he would build upon what he did last year.

Very disappointed
Scary… 6 BB in 4 IP knowing your ticket to the majors is control is very worrysome. At what point does this become Ankiel like?
With the way Rich Hill's pitching...
He should be telling people he’s injured

Speaking of potential buyers of Wrigley...
Did anyone notice this nugget in the Sun Times today?
While Tribune wanted to sell Wrigley separately to a state agency, arguing that its tax base could fund ballpark renovations, the company took a different tack in its book. A source said it conveys the message that, "If we didn’t put a penny into the stadium, it would be fine for 20 years."
Eh hem… maybe 20 months…

Cuban gets a bad rap
he’s not the only one mentioned by name, but he’s the one singled out as an attention whore. He is a self-promoter, but he also appears to be a fan committed to winning. Not bad qualities for an owner in my book.
Don Levin is the same thing.
Except he grew up a Cubs fan like we did, and doesn’t feel the need to self-promote. He’s my choice.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
the Wall Street Journal had an article about that
Check it out-
“We all know that in the past the Cubs have spent a lot of money on bad teams, as well as a lot of money on mediocre teams. This year if they are spending a lot of money on a good team, it not only augers well for this year in terms of revenue generation, it augers well for the future because they will have the same talent more or less available next year.
If you are a buyer, you are going to estimate what kind of net income you are going to have for the next 20 to 30 years and you discount that back to the present. And if they have at the current payroll a winning team rather than a losing team that gives you more net income this year and more net income for a few years into the future. Hence it increases the value of the club. So yes it does improve that.”

Odd reason to want him to own the Cubs.
”... doesn’t feel the need to self-promote.”
Why is this a good thing exactly? It isnt clear what it says about him. Does he lack confidence or does he not care what any of us think of him? Is he secretive or is there nothing to say about him? Is he avoiding the spotlight or is the spotlight avoiding him?
I want someone energetic, communicative, and entertaining. Harry Carry was one of the all-time self-promoting announcers and I loved him.

Let's face it...
...any owner would be VERY wise to basically scrap and rebuild the entire non-bleacher grandstand area, installing better/more luxury boxes, more seating generally (if possible) and fewer obstructed view seats. Eliminating the bizarre concrete panels on Addison would be an improvement too (brick, anyone?) Basically, the only thing that really NEEDS to stay is the brick wall lining the field and the Wrigley marquis, from an architectural standpoint.
Of course, that’s probably a project that will take longer than a winter (unlike the bleachers) which brings forth the possibility of playing a full season (or part of one) in Comiskey or Soldier Field….which, frankly, I’d take for an improved Wrigley consistent with the current stadium on the same location, as well as the additional revenue…..
I agree with you. I am guessing the catch is getting an owner in place to campaign quietly for a place to play, get that approval, then move forward with the retrofit/rebuild. The new owner will need to play to Reinsdorf’s ego to get dates at Comiskey (I know it’s public owned, but the White Sox wield power at that venue).
That's the catch right there...
US Crappular is owned by the city of Chicago & lesser by the Chicago Convention & Visitor’s Bureau. If the Cubs need a park to play in, if and when Wrigley is rehabbed, Reinsdork the Sox have no choice in the matter. Of course, it would be nice to ask, but they don’t own it and ultimately have no say.

Are you suggesting that Cuban promoted to get his name in the column? While many might not like his style, he has proven to the players that are on his team as well as their fans that he has an undying thirst for winning.
Really, I only care that the next owner has a passion for wins over return on investment. Anyone but Canning should be our mantra.

Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Here's an article on
Blue Mike’s muse over at Athletics Nation while we wait for game time.
Harden is arguably the most untouchable he has been in his career. And if you judge by the contact that players make when they swing at one of his pitches, that appears to be the case. Opposing batters are only making contact 66 percent of the time when they swing at a Harden pitch. That is a ridiculous number. For example, Johan Santana, who was widely considered the best pitcher in baseball for quite a few years when he was with the Twins had a contact percentage on swings of 69 and 67 percent. These were years when he was striking out 265 guys. Santana’s percentage this year is 78 percent. For those of you wondering, Barry Zito’s contact percentage is 86 percent, the highest it’s been in his career.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
I don't think so...

While I feel that it's unlikely that a trade would ever be brought up,
the great posters at Cubs.com-who bring such great reputation as Cubs fans- are coming up with trades that are, well, just well.
CUBSWIN11 No I don’t mean any of those guys but Ward wouldn’t be a guy to base a deal around it will take a package consisting of Pie, Hill, Cedeno, Colvin, Veal, Ceda, Epatt, Smardija, Gallagher, Marshall, Murton, Hoff.
That’s 12 people, for one pitcher with a mid-4 ERA this year. Now, maybe I’m reading this wrong and he means a combo of those 12; but before then, oh but before that genius post, he says
CUBSWIN11 Hill, Pie/Colvin, Veal, Ceda, Murton. That might not be enough. Gallagher might also have to be included.
I hate people so much, sometimes I wonder why I even bother reading posts that I know will make me red with furious anger.

I learned a lot about the game of baseball listening to Stoney in the ‘80’s on WGN. I mourned when he left broadcasting for a few years, then rejoiced when he came back. However, Steve Stone now is not anywhere near the Stone of old. He has turned into a smarmy know-it-all with an axe to grind. He has been trying to get into baseball, either at the GM/Organizational level, or by buying into a ballclub for years, (about ten years or more). No one will touch him, and there has to be a reason for that. I think the real Steve Stone must be a real a@*!!#hole in real life.

I don't like Jedmonds "protecting" Soto in this lineup...
I get the feeling Geo isn’t going to see more than 2 hittable pitches tonight…unless the pitchers make mistakes. Hopefully Geo is patient and Jim makes them pay.

I broke my hand on a pitch like that in high school. Honestly, he didn’t look like he was in enough pain for it to be a break. If it’s broken Fonzie is one tough dude to now show it – I was jumping up and down screaming after I broke mine.
