Soriano Hurt

I saw fuzzycubfan already has a fanpost about this but I wanted to make a poll. With Soriano out for at least six weeks, who should be the Cubs everyday leftfielder? Should it be Reed Johnson and then Lou can play Edmonds everyday in center. Or should they still switch off, and it can be Matt Murton, who's tearing up AAA. Or Hoffpauir, or someone else. What do you guys think? P.S. I love winning!!!

It's gotta be Murton

He deserves it. He’s been hitting great in AAA and he is often underestimated. He has a career batting average of .295 and if he would’ve had 600 AB’s like an everyday player last year, he would’ve had 20+ homers. That’s of course an estimated number.

Patterson

It should be Eric Patterson…he’s the leadoff guy they need.

Can he play left

Or are you suggesting that they put DeRosa in left and Patterson at second?

Patterson in Left

I’d play Patterson in left and leave DeRosa at Second.

DeRosa

And get Cedeno as the everday 2b

Ding Ding Ding Ding!

I agree.

DEROSA: How did it feel when you're sitting in Baton Rouge and it came across the ticker that Mark DeRosa had just signed to play second base with the Chicago Cubs.

THERIOT: In all honestly, when I saw it, I really felt like punching you right in the mouth and or breaking your leg.

I think a lot of people are going to have a rude awakening

if and when the Cubs call Murton back up. He’s a mediocre outfielder with no power and, at best, average speed. Thinking that he’s going to be any kind of a decent replacement for Soriano is ridiculous.

by bluekoolaide on Jun 11, 2008 10:43 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Okay, but what else do you suggest?

Hoffpauir isn’t any sort of outfielder and has even less speed. Move DeRosa to left and you’re left with the Hamster. Nobody’s claiming that Murton is going to step right up and deliver Soriano’s production in the outfield. But he’s the best left fielder in the organization now that Soriano is injured. This isn’t rocket science.

by cwyers on Jun 11, 2008 11:07 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Thanks for clearing the rocket science part up for me.

I didn’t realize it was such an easy decision. And, for what it’s worth, it was reported today that DeRo will get the majority of playing time in left while Soriano is out so apparently Hendry and Pinella weren’t following you’re simple logic either.

by bluekoolaide on Jun 12, 2008 8:20 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He does not need to replace Soriano

Whoever it is, just needs to not become an automatic out. You still have 4 offensive studs (Ramirez, Lee, Fuku, and Soto) in the lineup and 2 quality bats (Dero and Theriot). If you get decent production out of left field and the folks in center continue to play okay…we will be just fine.

Murton...

definitely deserves a chance to be an every day player in the bigs. However, he’s not the right fit for this team right now. Bring up Hoffpauir. He is a good left handed bat with power. He has the chance to do some actual damage. Then Cedeno can get some time against lefties by putting DeRosa in left.

This is what I like to call "misjudging offense and ignoring defense."

There’s very little evidence that Hoffpauir is a superior hitter to Matt Murton. There is, however, a large body of evidence that suggests that Hoffpauir is a much inferior defensive player.

And this is what Lou will do, probably. I want drinks.

lets give someone the complete job and not a platoon.

and i think murton deserves it

Wow

In 132 comments in both Soriano’s Hurt threads, the words “Felix Pie” were never uttered once. I’m not saying he should be called up as part of the two guys that will be coming up this week (although I would consider it a real option for his defense, which is miles ahead of the all the other options)—just astonished that he has apparently lost all of his support.

My bad

Pie got one or two minor mentions in the other thread.

A combination of the three...with a sprinkle of DeRo.

Platoon it out to whoever’s got the hot hand.

More importantly, does that mean Fukudome finally goes to leadoff or will it be The Riot?

Personally, I'd go with Fukodome in lead-off

but, with the absence of a left-handed hitter in the middle of the line-up (when edmonds isn’t playing) it looks like Lou is going to go with Theriot.

I dont want to mess with the lineup

Well you have to a little. Keep the same 2-7. Move DERO to leadoff and put him in left. Dont mess with the platoon in CF and whoever is at 2B (whether Font, Onedec, Patterson) whoever they bat 8th.

Buster Olney said a few days ago that the Braves would entertain offers for their 26 year old shortstop (who makes 450k) Yunel Escobar. He is a plus bat, a solid defender, and would move Theriot to his more appropriate position at second.

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.

What would it take?
