Runs vs. Saves: The Kerry Wood Dilemma
The Cubs have the best record in baseball and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching them all season. The team is patient at the plate, scores a ton of runs, and Carlos Zambrano's pitching has been unbelievable. But perhaps my favorite part of the season has been watching Kerry Wood return to his dominant form as the team's closer. In my life, there have been only two players that I would consider my favorite - Ryne Sandberg and Kerry Wood. Even while Kerry was going through all of his injuries, I just couldn't pick a new favorite Cub, and every time Kerry battled back from an injury, I would love him that much more. Kerry Wood wasn't quitting on baseball, so why would I quit on Kerry Wood?
Going into the season, there was a three way battle for the Cubs closer spot between Wood, Carlos Marmol and Bob Howry. I knew Kerry had the right mental toughness to make a great closer, and felt in my heart that it should be his job to lose. Sure enough, Kerry Wood won the job, and the Cubs were immediately criticized by many reporters for giving the closer job to a player that they considered an injury risk over a younger player like Marmol. But despite a few early bumps, Kerry Wood has remained the Cubs closer, and he seems to be getting more comfortable as the season progresses (in contrast to Marmol, who seems to be tiring). If fact, Wood is tied for the league lead in saves, and if he could just stop hitting batters, he would have to be considered one of the best closers in baseball!
Which brings me to my main point. The hardest time for me to watch the Cubs this season has been during the 8'th inning when the Cubs are up by three runs. I know I should be rooting for the Cubs to score as many runs as possible, and I know it's wrong to hope for three quick outs when the Cubs are at the plate...but every time the Cubs score that fourth run, Kerry Wood is denied a save chance. I want Kerry's 9'th inning dominance on display - to see him strike out three batters, get another save and continue to prove all of his critics wrong. I love seeing Kerry Wood's name at the top of the saves list, and in a dream world he would set the single season record for saves, leading the Cubs to the playoffs. And of course the playoffs would end in a championship for the Cubs, with Kerry Wood striking out the final batter. In fact, I've dreamed of that scenario for a couple of years now, ever since Wood was moved to the bullpen in the first place.
Just the other night, the Cubs led the Braves by only one run going into the bottom of the 8'th inning, but the Cubs proceeded to score four more times, highlighted by Geovany Soto's three run homer. And even though it was nice to see Geo hit that home run, all but assuring that the Cubs would win, a small part of me was disappointed. Kerry Wood had stopped warming up - there would be no save chance on this night. Obviously the most important thing is a Cubs win, but I still selfishly want Kerry Wood to contribute to that Cubs win. It's really tough when your favorite player is a closer. I've often wondered if other Cubs fans feel like me - a small part of them rooting for a dramatic save over that extra insurance run. Maybe we're wrong to feel this way, but we just can't help ourselves - we love Kerry Wood! Go Cubs Go!!!
FULL DISCLOSURE TIME: I should probably mention that I drafted Kerry Wood on both of my fantasy baseball teams at the beginning of the year, knowing that he would win the closer job. Now, I don't let fantasy baseball interfere with my rooting for the Cubs EVER. A Cubs win is the most important thing, so when the Cubbies are rallying against Takashi Saito, I don't care that my fantasy team's ERA takes a hit - the Cubs won! Saito can get his saves against some other team. I honestly don't think fantasy baseball is the reason for my feelings about Wood - I like to think that I'm just happy my favorite player is pitching well, helping out his team and silencing all his doubters. But it would be a pretty big omission to not admit that both of my fantasy teams are helped out every time Kerry Wood gets a save.
Thanks Al for the great site, I've never posted here before, but I've been visiting daily for about two years now. Keep up the good work!!!

I get a Woody!
I too love to see Wood pitch in the ninth and hate it when he doesn’t get a save opportunity. And I also have an alternative motive. At the begining of the season some load mouth Sox fans were ripping the Cubs and their choice of injury cursed Wood as the closer. I had enough of their talk and told them to put their money where their mouth is. I have bets with two of them that Kerry will get 30 saves. I think I’m looking pretty good right now. In fact, when he hits 25 I may let them off the hook by doubling down on 40 saves.

All true
I know what you mean from a “fan of Kerry-” and a fantasy-perspective. I also have two verbal bets about Wood cresting the 30 save mark. One is with a real piggish guy who challenged me out of the blue. I thought to myself, “I didn’t even know he followed baseball or knows the game at all.” Turns out he doesnt know what he’s talking about.
I used to be "Jones," but I got swooped on the redesign.

Closers Not Used Enough Before 9th
First of all, I know you want to win your fantasy league. Thus, you want Kerry to get as many saves as possible. You want to him to have as many opportunities as possible.
Let me digress. I firmly believe that managers aren’t putting closers into pressure cooker situations in the 7th and 8th innings because they are worried their closers might blow saves. Heaven forbid you put your closer into a game only 1 run up in the 8th with the tying run at second with only 1 out. Oh, no, if he gives up a hit, he’ll blow a save. How awful! That looks so bad on the closer’s statistics. My point is the set up guys are many times given tougher assignments than closers. If you’re going to lose a game in the pen late, lose with the best reliever available.
If a closer comes into a game at the start of the 9th with his team three runs up, he can give up two runs and still get a save. The set up guys don’t have nearly that margin for error many times in the 7th and the 8th innings. If your best reliever is available, you might want to bring him early to put out the fire. It is possible to lose games in the 7th and 8th innings. Why wait until the 9th?
How about this for an idea? When an easy save opportunity comes along, let somebody other than the “closer” come in to finish the game. You could rest your closer in situations like that. I am pleased that the Cubs have two guys, Wood and Marmol, who can close. Too many other teams have this idea that only one guy can close a game. Having that mindset is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

LSA too, but...
... Kerry Wood is one of my favorite players. I like his attitude, his talent, and his willingness to stick with the organization and to win here, when he could easily have gotten more money elsewhere.
Not every day, though: wouldn’t it be nice to win by 10-0 some days?

Wow...
Listen. We all have our favorite Cubs…Kerry Wood seems to be the favorite for a lot of people because of what he represented when he was young and what he has been through. The Cubs had terrible pitching in the 90’s so when Kid K showed up, it looked like the organization was about to turn around. We all know what happened next. However, Woody deserves a ton of credit for sticking with it. He could’ve threw in the towel many years ago but he hasn’t and for that I respect him.
But to want the Cubs to be in save situations every game is flat-out ludacris. He is doing well as our closer right now, but lets not forget that he is quite injury proned. The toll we are putting on our bullpen right now is tremendous and its what is worrying me the most about this team. You mentioned Carlos Marmol looking tired in your post…Ya think?! We are running this guy into the ground. Howry still hasn’t come around so its obvious why Lou is using him so much.
I like Kerry Wood and glad he is still on the Cubs. However, lets just remember who we are talking about. I’m sure closing is less stressful on the arm than starting but the Cubs still need to be careful with this guy and give save situations to others not named Carlos from time-to-time. It’s only June and these guys need to have strong arms come the playoffs.

A dream for me
would be a swinging strikeout to win the WS. The pitch would be similiar to the 20K he through in 98. Instead of Derek Bell it will be——well anyone, I dont care.

Arod
is who I would pick. Only b/c I would love to see Cubs beat Yankees in a WS. It would be a battle between good and evil.

I'd prefer a threepeat, so all 3 can get that opportunity!

Without a doubt...
Pierzynski. And if at all possible he gets drilled by the pitch but clearly goes around. I’m not sure if its a live ball or not at that point (if first base is open), but if it is Geo can pick it up and tag AJ while he’s lying unconscious on his back in the batters box. And the Cubs can mob Kerry while Ozzie drags AJ back to the dugout.
With Cubs legend Ron Santo...
