Soriano Update
According to ESPN.com, the Cubs have placed Soriano on the 15 day DL, I reckon he'll be on the DL for more than 15 days. But it also says they've optioned Hart. Bye-bye, 13 man pitching staff (thank-you). They've called up Micah Hoffpauir and Eric Patterson. I haven't gotten any report on what the starting lineup will be tonight, but my guess is they'll probably not be with the team until tommorow at Toronto and DeRo will man left, and Onedec will take second base for the time being.

No doubt...........
...........Dempster’s complete game aided in the decision to dump a 13th pitcher. Some of the arms in the pen (Wuertz, Cotts, Wood) are now well-rested.
It would be nice to see Patterson and Hoffpauir make an impact. Time will tell.

Murton needs to find a new home,
I think a trade of Cotts and Murton might get Fuentes, CO would like him for he can play a 5th OF and replace Spielhoff who will replace Matt Holiday whom they are going to try to trade for a big cache.

this move was obvious and for Murton it is humbling
The move was obvious since E-Patterson is a a prototypical lead off hitter at the MLB level. It disrupts the rest of the working lineup the least. Hoffpauir is in Ward’s spot.
Look for Reed Johnson to be inserted as a double switch when the situation dictates.
Lou will be forcing the scorecard makers to increase their size with all his moves until Soriano returns.

Murton
Murton has been passed over for promotion a couple of times now. In the estimation of the Cubs it is clear they no longer consider him major league roster material. Apparently 29 other ballclubs feel the same way as none of them have beat a path to Jim Hendry’s door to acquire Murton. He’s been on the block since last winter after all.

Or, it could have to do with the fact
that bringing Murton up would burn his last option, meaning he’d have to reamin with the big club for the rest of the season, meaning someone would have to come off the 40-man roster. But far be it from you to allow the facts to intrude.

When was Murton NOT on the 40-man roster?
Am I missing something here?
by smmcctrk on Jun 12, 2008 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He ison the 40-man, but not on the active roster. I meant
someo0ne would have to come off the active roster. My point still stands, though. If Murton is brought up, he has to stay with the club for the remainder, and that, given that there’s already a 4th OF (Johnson) and a suitable replacement for either LF or RF in Derosa, should someone get hurt, is the main reason why Murton’s not with the big club. He is superfluous, at this point..

Under what rule...
... does Murton have to stay with the team the rest of the season?

Once a player has been on the 40-man for three season, when he hits
his fourth season on the 40-man, if he is brought up, he must clear waviers in order to be sent down again. Murton won’t clear waviers.

Huh?
Murton played 8 games with the Cubs earlier this season and then he was sent down. Bringing him up again would not “burn” any options. Options are for entire seasons. You need to check your facts.

No, you do. See my reply to Al above.

So then
why were the Cubs able to send him down earlier this season without having him clear waivers?

I'm not sure.
Unfortunately, MLB doesn’t publish the complete transaction rules, so maybe there was some loophole they jumped through.

Is it because he was never on the 25-man active roster? Murton didn't make the club out of spring training. He was just assigned to AAA when they broke camp.

No
Murton played in 8 games for the Cubs at the beginning of the year and he was on the 25-man active roster. Then on May 1st he was optioned to AAA (see below). This is an option year for Murton and he can be brought up and down as many times as the Cubs want. There’s no mystery here, except some people have trouble admitting when they’re wrong.
Cubs May 1: Activated outfielder Alfonso Soriano from the 15-day disabled list; optioned outfielder Matt Murton to Iowa of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

What about this:
When you hear that a player is “out of options,” that means he’s been on the 40-man roster during three different seasons, beginning with his fourth as a pro, and to be sent down again he’ll have to clear waivers (more on those below).
Since you obviously didn’t read it the first time I posted it: linky.

I'm aware
of the transaction rules. You are not. As indicated in the link below, Murton has been optioned to Iowa TWICE already this season. Once on March 31st and again on May 1st. I’ll repeat it one last time: the Cubs can bring him up and send him down this year without worrying about the waiver process. That’s because this is an option year. Your original comment is wrong whether you want to acknowledge it or not. Hopefully people reading this thread aren’t confused by your comments.

And since you've obviously been made aware of the rules,
I’m sure won’t mind providing the source, because I’d also like to know them, just I don’t make the same mistake again.

Aha!
Here’s why: The first time Murton was optioned to Iowa, it was on MArch 31; he was recalled on April 19, just shy of the magical 20-day mark. Why is it magical? Per the MLBPA Collective Bargaining Agreement:
If a player is for a total of less than 20 days in one championship season, such optional assignment(s) shall not count as an optional assignment in connection with the limitations on optional assignments provided for in Major League Rule 11©
Murton’s second optioning to Iowa counts, as it’s been longer than 20 days. He’s now “out of options,” and is in his 4th season on the 40-man, which might explain why he hasn’t been recalled, because it seems that the 4th year on the 40-man means they can’t send him up and down at will, unless it’s for elss than 20 days at a time. I know what you’re saying, that in an option year a player can be sent up and down, at will. That’s correct. What I’m saying is the 4th year on the 40-man pre-empts that, or at least that’s my interpretation of the rules.

Though her description of the injury makes it seem worse than the impression I had gotten, that it was the actual hand, not the knuckle…..this could be bad.

Fuentes
Cotts is worth little to nothing and although Murton has some value, it would take a lot more than that to convince the Rockies to trade one of the 3 pitchers they have who has performed even decent this year.
