How many of you were like me today? 7th inning, down two and said, "We're going to win this, it's only the 7th?" Do you know how absurd that is coming from a lifelong Cubs fan? (My baseball friends say a mantra for Cubs fans is "OH NO!")
This team, the Comeback Cubs, have me convinced. Another late inning win in front of 41,517 happy fans.....oh, I wish I were there. The big bat award goes to a guy that may just start winning over cubs fans but I still think it may take a few more of these. Edmonds 9th inning homerun to tie the game traveled 360 happy feet into the basket in left. And, his 7th inning sac fly got the cubs on the board. Who would have ever thought we would be cheering for Edmonds?
The finish of the game goes down in crazy finishes. Bases loaded in the 11th with Ramirez who was walked and advanced on past ball, Fukudome who was intentionally walked, and Soto who singled (and almost drove in the game winning run but a smart move by third base coach non-wavin' Wendell Mike Quade who alertly held Aramis at third) and set up Edmonds heroics again. Bobby Cox, who has to have a shoe sticking out of his pants tonight after kicking himself all the way to the airplane, brings in the lefty Ridgeway to face Edmonds but Lou counters with Reed Johnson. With crowd screaming and standing, Ridgeway plunks Johnson in the foot, game over, Cubs win. Saying this team finds ways to win is an understatement.
The bullpen was great. 4 innings of 3 hit ball. Wasn't it nice to see Cotts and Eyre show some dependability? It this continues, I don't think there is a better pen in the NL. Wood pitched an uncharacteristic 2 innings and Marmol put out the fire after Z and Eyre had walked two too many.
Not to be lost was the 3 hits by Soto raising his average to .288 and one foot in the all-star lineup. Did anyone predict this in January?
Last of all, what did you think of the throwbacks? Me, I liked the look (made Lou look slimmer!) and the all white with the simple Cubs logo was great. Wasn't it funny to see players all in stirrups again? The navy caps and the wishbone "C" reminds me too much of the Reds, but it was a classy uniform. For me this was a hit, let's try it again someday. We'll probably be able to buy that uniform for $299, just another way to feed the cow.
I don't want anyone to get "used" to winning. This has been so much fun. First sweep of the Braves since 2000, another home sweep, best record in baseball, 29-8 at home, 19 games over .500 on JUNE 12! On to Toronto! What a fun ride!
