Cubs Nicknames

This was a post on the Cubscast Message Boards and I wanted to post it here to get your guys feedback. They are discussing all of the different nicknames they have for different Cubs. Here are some of mine.

Alfonso Soriano-Fonzie

Ryan Theriot-The Riot

Derek Lee-D

Aramis Ramirez-Rammy

Kosuke Fukudome-Dome

Ryan Dempster-Dempe

Jon Lieber-Liebs

Ted Lilt-Lil' T

Jason Marquis-J. Marq

Carlos Zambrano-Big Z

Ronny Cedeno-Onedec

Eric Patterson-E-Patt

Jim Edmonds-Edmo

Most of mine are just plays on their names. For example, Lil T, Ted LILy, yes I know, it's really lame but that's what I call him. So what are some of your guys nicknames that you have for players?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I only have what I've picked up from people on the board

Gallagher – Easy Gas
Marmol – White Castle
Eyre – Stevie Ire
Edmonds – Hollywood
Fontenot – The Hamster – The Wonder Hamster
Wood – Kid K (no, I haven’t let go of that one yet)

Sorry if I stepped on anyone’s toes by posting and not giving proper credit.

To be honest, I don’t like the first initial+last name nicknames like ARod… For some reason I’m fine with it with DLee, but EPatt, CPatt, ARam… I don’t care for those, they just seem lazy to me. I miss the old days with cool, imaginative nicknames like The Bull, The Penguin, Sarge, The Red Baron, Rainbow, and Zonk – with the cool nicknames I see popping up on this site, I think a lot of others miss those type of nicknames too.

You too?

I thought I was the only one.

Matt Stairs...

is the only “Wonder Hamster” and, unless Fontenot gains about 50 lbs., he has no claim to the title.

Stairs a hamster?

That’s a pretty big hamster.

I'm surprised...

...that nobody else has chimed in to say, “wait a minute, Stairs is the ‘Wonder Hamster’, that’s a blatant case of Nickname Theft.” Then, I wondered if that was a personal nickname for Stairs, something that only a few people called him…because Stairs was the all-time favorite player of one of my college roommates, an Oakland native and passionate A’s fan…

...So I googled “Matt Stairs” and “Wonder Hamster” and, among the first results, was this SI profile of him from 10 years ago.

A few paragraphs in, it notes that the A’s fans call him the “Wonder Hamster” and the term came up in all kinds of blog results from his time with the Royals, Pirates, etc. While OT, the bulk of the profile is a good example of why Matt Stairs is one my favorite ballplayers, ever.

Now, Mike Fontenot is an extremely likeable ballplayer but I don’t think he should be allowed to steal Stairs nickname. Rather, he deserves his own unique nickname and there are many possible inspirations for his own unique monicker…his Cajun heritage…his hustle…his dimunitive stature…that awful haircut…his resemblance to Mickey Morandini…you tell me.

We sell spatulas...and that's all.

by LaddieRenfroe on Jun 14, 2008 5:17 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He didn't steal it.

Mike has no idea we call him that. As long as we call him that in here it hurts nothing. I doubt Matt Stairs gives a crap.

Aramis Ramirez...

is known to me and my friends as “Chong Hits.”

Several of us were at a game in Pittsburgh when Aramis was still with the Pirates. Between innings at PNC, they ran a montage on the jumbotron of several different players answering questions such as “what is your favorite movie?” When Aramis answered that one, he giggled and paused for a second, then said, “Cheech and Chong Up in Smoke,” and then he busted out laughing. We’ve called him “Chong Hits” ever since.

A-Ram used to be

We used to call him big lazy. But that was back in 2006ish… Now I feel ashamed to have called him that.

and I’m sure Aramis is the only one on The Cubs who would pick that movie too….

Don't really have any different ones

Except for Jedmonds, and Lil Todd Walker for Fontenot.

Check out my sig

It’s an actual conversation at the August 12 Cubs game about nicknames

Me "I think it's cool that a lot of Cubs have names that are abbreviations. A-Ram, D-Ro, D-Lee.... how about R-Ther (R-Tear).
Cousin "....that just sounds graphic."

The Great Zambino

Mine for Zambrano is The Great Zambino

i love the onedec name for ronny.

Two nicknames

Last year I dubbed Carlos Marmol as “The Marmolator” – referring to batters getting “Marmolized” or “Marmolated” by his wicked slider.

It occurred to me this year that Scottie Eyre, not only reminds me of, but becomes “Eyore” of Pooh fame when a simple “o” is added to his name.

Here are a few

Big Z
DLee
The Riot
ARam
Dome (doughmay)
Fonty
Onedec (used to call him Cedung-yo, but he is above that level now)
Demp (used to be Dumpster, but again he is playing above that level)
Howry = Bobby (he used to be Bad Howry)
Marmol = The Fireman
DeRo
Woody
Murton = Murt, Ginger Kid
Wuertz used to be Worst on a bad day
Just Soto for Soto, Geo kinda sounds snobby like calling a Barbara Babs.

I am seeing that I have many angst filled nicknames for the pitchers, especially for the bullpen. I always stew for a starting pitcher that busts his butt only to have it lost by the bullpen.

Geovany Soto you're my Hero
