Jason Marquis vs Roy Halladay

Partly cloudy with a 40-percent chance of rain. Winds blowing from left to right field at 5-15 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 75.

Complete Coverage >

TORONTO -- The rain has stopped this morning -- not that it would really matter for the game, because they could just close the roof again. But I'm kind of looking forward to seeing baseball in sunshine this afternoon.

Lou Piniella has rethought his rotation shuffle; this means Ryan Dempster misses the Baltimore series, and Carlos Zambrano will only face the White Sox once. (That notes column also indicates that 15 minor leaguers will be recalled to play in the Hall of Fame game on Monday.)

Bruce Miles writes that the flooding in Iowa has forced the Cubs to make adjustments in the farm system, including sending Kevin Hart to Double-A to get work in, because he couldn't get to Des Moines. They're even considering sending Sean Marshall there to get work.

And does anyone know what the reason is for the x:07 starts in Toronto? Is it a sponsorship deal like the White Sox have with 7-11?

Roy Halladay's only career appearance vs. the Cubs was on June 8, 2005 at Wrigley Field. He threw well, allowing two runs in 7 innings, but that was one of the games after which Sergio Mitre should have been immediately traded, because Mitre was better, allowing no runs, and the Cubs won 2-0. Take a look at that "vs. Cubs" link in the pitcher box, and just for amusement, look at what Halladay did to Alfonso Soriano when Soriano was in the AL. Of course, that's irrelevant today, but still interesting. More intersting is the 12 walks in 102.2 IP (which leads the majors, as does his 5 CG). The Cubs, leading the majors in walks, will have to put the ball in play today to be successful.

Jason Marquis has a little more experience against today's hitters, including allowing three HR (in 24 AB) to Cub nemesis Scott Rolen. Brad Wilkerson has also hit him well (.333/.444/.800, 5-for-15, a double, 2 HR, 3 walks). Marquis threw really well and looked focused in his last start in Los Angeles last Sunday. That's the Marquis we need to show up today.

Today's game is on CBC, nationwide in Canada. I know, that doesn't really help anyone in the USA. It's also on CSN Chicago, and at the MLB.com Mediacenter. It is probably NOT on EI today, due to the silly Fox Saturday restrictions.

Halladay

I didn’t realize quite how ridiculously well Halladay has been pitching so far this year—some pretty sick numbers.

4 CG in a row in April

BBB had a good comment yesterday saying that if he had pitched for the Yankees that’d be front page, lead off story on all sports reports… but since he plays for Toronto it was buried w/ the other crap nobody cares about… great point.

This game scares me...

...Halladay is great, and Marquis…is…not.

FWIW, I’m in Rolla, MO, visiting my girlfriend @ her new job, which is about 90 minutes from St. Louis. I was just in line at Panera and the guy in front of me was in Cardinals sandals, Cardinals WS06 shirt, and Cards hat. I almost puked up my bagel.

on the x:07's

i have no real idea why they do it, but we aren’t the only ones wondering:

from a mariners blog

The :07 start times hail back from when one US minute was worth 1.40 Canadian minutes. thanks to the abysmal state of the US economy, we have since reached minute parity, but the schedules have not been updated to reflect that.

Possible answer for the *:07 start times...

From bluejays.com…

“The CBC will produce 24 contests beginning with a June 7 game against East Division rival, the Baltimore Orioles. The CBC and the Blue Jays reunited last season to continue a long history that began with the clubs inaugural season in 1977.”

Considering the Jays started playing in 1977, perhaps all of the CBC games are starting at *:07 in honor of that season…?

NAEP = National Assessment of Educational Progress

Math scores have been going up, for the most part. Why do I know this? Because I’m a nerd PhD student in the Department of Special Education @ the University of Kansas. Math is looking okay, but my cohort’s focus is adolescent literacy, and our country is pretty bad at making sure teens can read. If you can’t read by 4th grade, you’re screwed, cuz we quick teaching you how to read, and started force-feeding content. Here’s recent math scores, in a nifty chart:

Wacky is right....

I was going to Australia, flying out of Vancouver, they held my license and passport for 3 hours because I am such a dangerous person….a 22 year old assault bust!!! Man, they were hilarious. And totally shocked because we had stayed 10 days in Vancouver the year before. “How did you get in?” sez them. “Well,” sez me, ” I took the ferry…”. They finally let me go, got to the flight 30 minutes before it left…..

The :07 start times are because the games are in Canada.

Thus, BOTH national anthems are sung prior to the start of each game (Star Spangled Banner and Hockey Night in CanadaO Canada). They figured out that, come hell or high waters, games were starting at seven after, not five after. They finally stopped fighting it.

by cwyers on Jun 14, 2008 11:34 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If you put Halladay’s name in the search on Oswalts page, you have to find the right page BUT…...Soriano has 5 HR v. Halladay, but hitting .243 with a very meager SLG %.......

DLee and Rami are 1 for 3 and DeRo is hitting a whopping .000. Halladay is tough, has been for a long time….here is to hoping all his pitches are straight and catch a good part of the plate. Think we can trade Marquis for him?

Dubuque.

So far as I know, Dubuque hasn’t really been hit hard – it’s well to the north, and is nowhere near as flat as the rest of the state. Most of the damage has been in the Des Moines/Cedar Rapids area. Out here in Davenport we’ve been dumped on, but we were lucky – there was a tornado that passed over us on Thursday without touching down.

The DH can move to play a position.

You just forfeit the DH the rest of the game and the pitcher hits. Given the odds that you need a backup catcher, I’d say the risk isn’t THAT great.

by crazymountain on Jun 14, 2008 11:56 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Our pitchers hit well for pitchers.

Meanwhile, with Ward and Soriano on the DL, the team really doesn’t have a lot of options when it comes to putting nine bats in the lineup, putting us at a marked disadvantage. All NL teams have that problem – AL teams go out and get a DH because they need one all season long, while NL teams rarely need one and thus normally don’t have that kind of a guy around.

That's your problem right there...

...I just switched to a MacBook Pro, and run VMWare for all my statistical analyses. I’ll never go back to PC, no reason to. Mac is soooooo much more intuitive, too, it’s ridiculous. And this is coming from a guy that sold PCs in retail for 4.5 years. I’ve switched, and I’m not goin back.

It's all the same hardware underneith...

...and a newer PC would probably be just as good as a newer Mac, not that I can afford either. The fact that I’m using Windows is far less relelvant than the fact that my computer is years old and I’ve got (I think) over 2GB of records I’m working on.

by cwyers on Jun 14, 2008 12:13 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

IIRC...a recent PC World noted the highest benchmarks to both come from Macs...

...And, FWIW, I bought a MB Pro refurbished. I waited until the new models were released (earlier this year), and the then-defunct models became refurbs. Basically I got a top of the line MB Pro for the price of a MB. It’s a worth looking into next time you buy a computer, a little trick the guys at the Mac store taught me about.

Interesting.

The ideal solution would be to get some sort of a headless server and just run Linux and MySQL on it, but I don’t do database work enough to justify it even if I could afford it right now.

I'd think that Linux could probably handle 2GB of

data, even on an old computer, with no problem.

How much compute power do you need, cwyers? Another good thing about linux is the ability to create user accounts… if you get my drift.

by jbau on Jun 14, 2008 12:41 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's a lot of baseball play-by-play data that I filter through.

I’m sure everyone is shocked by that, right? I’m creating an index right now so I can’t check for sure the size of the thing, the biggest table is the events table, which I think is over a gig of records by itself.

Right now I’m using straight SQL, maybe a bit of GNU-R mixed in. All single-user stuff though.

Yeah, amazing.

If anyone else is interested in playing around with that sort of thing, there’s a Yahoo! Group for it. A couple of guys (Tom Tango and Mat Kovach) are putting together a lot of great resources and tutorials to make setting it up a snap. It’s a much better setup than what I was using previously.

What I meant by ability to create user accounts...

Is that folks might be able to give you some access on a linux server, especially in an open university-type setting, if you’re interested in running your stuff remotely.

Heh. Felony for illegal use of R.

Wonder what MDBNIU would say. That’s outside the scope of his see-n-say.

But seriously though. I don’t think it’s anywhere near illegal if it’s someone’s personal machine—they’d have to make it illegal to host your website locally, then.

Anyways, let me know if you’re interested.
