ESPN's Kurkjian's All-Star Squad

I came across this looking for the US Open playoff score.  I don't know if anybody has seen this yet, but this is Tim Kurkjian's All Star picks.  I think he's got the pitchers pretty nailed and he gives some love to the Cubbies but his position players are a little questionable.  I don't know, maybe I'm a bit biased.  But take a look and tell me what you think.

Soto doesn't even make the reserves?

Nor Molina? Ugh.

That's what I thought

Kind of surprising the snubs at the position players for the Cubs.

But then

his observations say almost every position player on the Cubs could get the nod. What? Then why are none starters? Not sure. Of course I am biased but Soto is a better option. Fukudome has been awesome at RF. Soriano, prob not even without the injury. I’d say Aramis deserves a nod too. I know chipper is the pick but…

How does that make you feel?

I like Kurkjian...

...a lot, but that is just crap.

One position player as a reserve? Are you flippin’ kidding me – we have the best offense in baseball for a reason.

GEO is not only the rookie of the year, but he is the best catcher in the NL right now.

For once, the fans might actually get this thing right!!!

No Wood? No Soto?

Maybe though this is a reflection of how much of a team this team actually is.

We have a good player at every position. Yes we could use an upgrade at SS and I’m a little shaky still but gaining confidence everyday in CF but we have a good player at every position.

Our best players are at heavy talent positions in the NL.

We are all waiting for that glorious October night when we finally win it all. Until then we will continue to cheer, never do the wave and hope.

Oops missed it he did list Wood.

If the season ended today I think he would be Fireman of the Year and also undoubtedly the Comeback Player of the Year.

Your right

The pitchers are nailed. But McClouth hasn’t been as hot lately and I think someone like Braun could take his spot.

The only thing I really disagree with...

Is Soto not making it and Molina making it instead. I’d also probably not go with a third 2B, in favor of a player at a more productive position. The dropoff from Utley and Uggla to DeRosa is substantial, so it seems that you could add another player somewhere else (like Ramirez).

Luckily, Kurkjian isn’t picking the team. We’ll do better with the actual selections.

What I find interesting

is that I think there’s a solid argument to be made that Crede and Pierzynski should be on the AL team, but neither of those guys are the best in Chicago at their position.

Based on Timmy’s picks, I think the NL is far, far better than the AL. It may be most evident in the infield Youkilis, Kinsler, Young, Crede versus Berkman, Utley, Ramirez, Jones.

Crede over Arod

That’s all I need to know about his picks.

by Rick B on Jun 16, 2008 5:01 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Have you looked at A-Rod's numbers?

He’s been hurt and has had a down year. Crede’s been pretty good.

That said, he does seem to have named a few people who were hot for the last three weeks.

Lemme see....he's with ESPN?

Funny, saw a foxsports article that only had Z on the team.

Me? I would rather none of our guys go to the great All-Star game in NYC. I think with what the schedule makers gave this team (today is a perfect example) that they could use the R&R over the break.

4 Rangers?, 4 Rangers? you've got to be freaking kidding. I

The funniest thing is that...

DeRosa was our only hitter selected by Kurkjian, but Soto, Kosuke, and Soriano all lead the voting.

Kurkjian gave us 5, we could get 8!

The Cubs currently have

3 out of 8 starters. And if Z starts the game 4 out of 9. (Volquez or Webb will probably start).
