"Steinbrenner: NL Needs to Grow Up"  HUH???

Somewhat off-topic for here, but as mostly NL fans, I wondered what opinions we had on this issue...personally, I know I speak for a lot of my friends when I say Hank can go crawl under his rock.  AL pitchers should hit just like NL just like all pitchers growing up do.  This idea of not hitting the pitcher is bupkus...

http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/06/16/hank-steinbrenner-thinks-the-national-league-needs-to-grow-up/

Posted Jun 16th 2008 9:00PM by Will Brinson
It is pretty likely that Hank Steinbrenner is frustrated at this point in the season. Just as the Yankees start to heat up and make a run at a David Ortiz-less Boston team, they lose Chien-Ming Wang for the next 10-12 weeks (and that's minimum). Of course, that doesn't mean he has to go and bash the Senior Circuit. But he does anyway.

'My only message is simple. The National League needs to join the 21st century,' Steinbrenner said in Tampa, Fla. 'They need to grow up and join the 21st century.

'Am I (mad) about it? Yes,' Steinbrenner added. 'I've got my pitchers running the bases, and one of them gets hurt. He's going to be out. I don't like that, and it's about time they address it. That was a rule from the 1800s.'

Who is this guy?? This is something even Big Stein wouldn't say; say what you want about his dad being a nutcase, but at least George had media savvy and never came off like Rod Farva when he got angry.

Sure, depending on what team you like and your thoughts on baseball, you might believe that the DH is either a) good or b) bad. Sometimes you hear people say "Gosh, I'm glad that the American League pitchers don't have to hit" or "Wow. I wish the American League would adhere more to the tradition of baseball and let pitchers hit."

You almost never hear a psychotic rant about the National League, and it's archaic ability to make sure that these ... gasp ... professional athletes are actually, you know, performing to their athletic ability by actually playing the game. I guarantee you if Hank had Micah Owings on his team he wouldn't feel that way either.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Sadly, we share the same opinion regarding the NL – it should adopt the DH. But Baby George’s act has already gotten old.

Why have a DH?

Damn, why not designated runners also? The DH is NOT baseball. Baseball is for all around athletes. Maybe the AL teams should make their pitchers get in shape, act like athletes instead of specialized machines.

I don't like that, either

College softball rules

In college softball, they have a substitution/re-entry rule. That is that any player may be subbed, then re-entered once. This leads to inane situations where pitchers can come in to save their own win. More often, it means that big, slow, fat players who can’t run are replaced on the basepaths with tiny, quick sprites who can’t hit. It’s a scoring nightmare and slows the game down ridiculously.

My favorite, though, is the designated player/pitcher rule. A team will make the lineup with the DP (not the DH) in the lineup and the “pitcher” batting in the “10th” position. Then, right before the game, after the lineups are submitted but before the game starts, they will switch the DP and the pitcher’s positions. So, essentially, you have the DP batting in the 10 spot, which means that they don’t actually bat until such a time that the coach wants to sub them in. It is confusing and another reason that I really don’t enjoy working softball games.

That said, pitchers should bat. The game should reward the all-around athlete, not hide the flaws of the merely “OK”. Carlos Zambrano, Micah Owings and Jason Marquis are better than their pitching counterparts who can’t hit.

" Baseball is for all around athletes"

The sort of eliminates the great majority of pitchers. Very, very few of them can hit. DHs are no worse fielders than pitchers are hitters.

Lowbrow baseball

It’s not just the pitchers actual at bats, it’s all about the managerial strategy. AL baseball is just a lowbrow version of the original game. Let’s do away with the 35+ year experiment of the DH as it’s clearly affected the integrity of the game. What, our pitchers can’t be asked to be athletic any more?

Good discussion

I though Buster played it a bit safe perhaps because he wants to preserve a connection for rumors and trades and such. Singleton and Krul said it like it is. I think Kruky said “Gimme a break”. They compared it to complaining about the weather. What an absolute baby! Real baseball, since the beginning, has had all players hitting. What a laugh to claim AL baseball is the real baseball.

Past players would laugh this statement off since they are the ones who made this game what it is. Not the DH.

by Scrapptastic on Jun 16, 2008 9:38 PM CDT reply actions

I'm laughing...

...ah, don’t let it bug you too much. Hank is just now learning about this beautiful game of baseball. In fact, or former catcher, their current manager, recently explained to Hank why the hitter, after hitting the ball, runs to first instead of third. Hank thought he was onto something when the personal overheard him yelling from his nifty owners booth to “run to third! You’d be closer to scoring ya moron!”

Give the guy some time… Remember when you where like 5 and had to learn all of the rules in t-ball? That’s where Hank is, T-ball… hey, in fact, maybe next time some pitcher has a large number of strike outs against the Yanks, maybe he’ll whine about how they had it right in t-ball and that if they get rid of pitchers, it will save owner millions of dollars. Hey yeah… then maybe some of these teams will make a profit… hey yeah… and….

ah, blah. Who cares. Hanks a Ham.

I hate the DH..

..because it takes away so much strategy from the game. I like the fact that teams in the NL have to decide whether or not to burn an arm out of the bullpen when the pitcher’s spot is due up in the next half inning. Not to mention, there would be much less sacrifice bunts, which would eliminate a lot of the small ball I like so much.

I say, leave the DH in the AL; that way, guys like Frank Thomas and other mediocre defensive playing power hitters can prolong their careers.

I have a question, How do the pitcher get to the mound in the AL?

I think he has to put one foot in front of the other and walk like the rest of us, and if I am not mistaken that is the way people run as well, including around bases.

This is just stupid, next thing you know, no stairs or something else crazy.

Who am I to judge myself.

by StevenABQ on Jun 17, 2008 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I think...

the whole baseball world would rather Hank put a sock in it (though ESPN probably loves having another story to run). The points have already been noted about lack of athleticism, strategy, etc but what about the DHs themselves? David Ortiz is awful in the field and would only be able to play 1B. Miguel Cabrera ate his way off the field. It’s a joke. It’s like having a designated free-throw shooter in basketball.

On as side note, where the Zambrano love? Why only mention Micah Owings when Big Z has and .873 OPS and 24 total bases versus a .631 OPS and 17 total bases for Owings?

by CubFan81 on Jun 16, 2008 10:10 PM CDT reply actions

In a slow BB day, Hank is a gift to BB commentators.

What a stupid and selfish comment. Your pitchers are supposed to know how to run and step on the bases, Hank. Don’t blame the rules because one of your players suffered a freak injury. It happens. Learn from it. Suck it in.

One reason Maddux blew off the Yankees in 92

When they offered him MILLIONS more than the Braves is that he loves to bat
and considers it the most fun part of the game. They wined him and dined him in NYC but he went to the Braves ( I don’t think he likes NYC as place to play anyway) where he could be a baseball PLAYER not just a pitcher. To this day he spends hours every week practicing bunts and taking BP. I would have loved to see Hank trying to court Z and explaining he would not have to bother himself with hitting.

Where-will-it-all-end dept.

Steinbrenner understates the case. Its not just pitchers. Hitters are also at risk. When Soriano went down injured in left field, Hendry COULD have said:

‘Am I mad about it? Yes, I’ve got my hitters playing out in the field, and now one of them gets hurt. He’s going to be out. I don’t like that, and it’s about time they address it. That was a rule from the 1800s.

‘People come to the ballpark to see Soriano at bat. That’s what he does. There might be some perverse pleasure these ‘purists’ get from seeing him floundering out in the field, but this is professional baseball. The public wants to see professional pitchers pitching to professional hitters, backed up by professional fielders.

‘These hitters spend years learning to hit major league pitching, and it can all be ruined by an injury picked up trying to catch the damn ball. That’s ridiculous. This is the 21st century!’

Or not.

Not exactly the same thing

Fonzie’s [everyday] job is to play of the OF. AL pitchers everyday job is not running bases. HOWEVER, an athlete should be conditioned well enough to run a lousy 350-400’ without pulling up lame.

That doesn’t say much for their conditioning ‘experts’ and pitching coach. Guess this guy doesn’t need his legs too much to pitch….yeah right.

I AM REALLY GETTING TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT THOSE DAMN YANKEES AND ALL THEIR PROBLEMS. THAT IS ALL THAT HAS BEEN ON SPORTS CENTER SINCE WANG GOT HURT. They did a 2 minute report on Sori’s injury and have had two complete shows dedicated to a pitcher who hurt himself running the bases. What else do they do??? I have been to Cubs games and what do you see the entire 2 hours before the game starts?...Pitchers running in the out field! And some ESPN “analist” said running and running bases are different. HUH? It’s not like he was stealing 2nd or legging out a triple, he scored from second on a base hit to right field. My 10 year old could do that! If you watch you can see he is not on a dead sprint and is just running. If he cant do that then he needs to work out a little more. And as far as Hank and his comments, do you expect any less from a Yankee and from an AL team who sucks right now.

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
