A story for people who love baseball
In today's Washington Post, Dave Sheinin interviews Bill Werber and it is a must-read. Who is Bill Werber, you ask? He is a 100 year old man who played in the major leagues and is the last living ex-teammate of Babe Ruth. Heck, he's the oldest living baseball player, period. He is the man who, in the late 1930's, saw his teammates on the Cincinnati Reds get "into a fight in the clubhouse when Derringer accused Goodman of not having any guts after the latter allowed a fly ball to drop in."
There are many great stories in this article--just go read it ! If you love baseball, you'll love this article.

Great article!
I just thought Dave Sheinin’s multiple choice style got kind of annoying, but what a great article

I kinda liked the multiple choice
concept, it gave him a way to give detail on the better stories, without dismissing the “little” stories. How cool would it be to sit and talk to that guy for a while?
This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

Wow
Man, someone should write a book with these stories documented, and interview only ballplayers over 80 years old. These stories are amazing, and bring the past alive. I wish I could have been around to watch baseball when players were called Schoolboy, Jo-Jo, and Lefty.
Fantastic read, thanks for sharing.

What a great two hours
I can only imagine how interesting that 2 hours was and I imagine when it was all over that it felt like 10 minutes.
I’ve already passed the link on to my 81 year old dad

THAT was a timeless look into the past
I shook my head. One could smell the wool of the doublebreasted suits stained with sweat and gin, hear Connie Mack sneer and watch a man named Bill fly like wind around the bases .. what a post!
As a baseball fan, this truly was satisfying to read .. thanks!
Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

If you liked that article...
... check out “Memories of a Ballplayer”, Werber’s memoirs of his career, published by SABR about seven years ago. Highly recommended.
