NOT A RUMOR--Cubs NOT looking at Randy Winn
I'm getting a little tired of the giant game of telephone that gets played on the internet. So I'm taking out a separate diary rather than post in this irresponsible diary because I don't want my comment to get lost in that rapidly exploding diary.
The original diary posted from a very questionable "trade rumors" site that is an "our favorite site" wannabe that doesn't even bother to source where they're getting their information. I'm not linking to it because I don't want to give them anymore traffic. If you want to check it out, go to the link in the original diary.
But the idiot who writes that blog can't read. The original source (which he can't be bothered to cite) is a SF Chronicle article over the weekend.
The story reads:
Cub talk: It could be a coincidence, but Gary Hughes, one of the Cubs' top talent evaluators, attended the A's-Giants games just after his club lost Alfonso Soriano to a broken hand. The Cubs are believed to be looking for a left-handed bat, but a source said they have not phoned the Giants about switch-hitting Randy Winn, the outfielder most likely to be shopped.
Someone apparently can't read. Henry Shulman clearly says the Cubs have not inquired about Randy Winn.
Does anyone here believe that article says the Cubs are interested in Randy Winn?
This is how stupid rumors get started. Now I'm not saying the Cubs aren't looking at Randy Winn. I'm not saying the Cubs won't look at Randy Winn in the future. I'm not saying Randy Winn might not be a good fit on the Cubs.
I'm saying that there are a lot of freaking idiots on the internet who can't read and have no critical evaluation skills and that there is absolutely no evidence that the Cubs are looking at Randy Winn.
So before everyone gets riled up about the previous diary--it's a pile of warm dog drippings. Absolutely nothing to it.
UPDATE NOTE: Please note the original rumor did not come from mlbtraderumors.com but rather a site with a very similar name and very similar url that is clearly trying to trade on their turf. I don't want anyone to be confused about that.
MLBtraderumors.com cites their sources. This guy does not. And the poster of the original diary just accepted a unsubstantiated claim.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Yikes...Josh77 woke up on the wrong side of the posturepedic today...
Is it possible that the Cubs were there scouting Harden? If I remember correctly, he pitched a shutout against the Giants this past weekend. Not trying to start anymore irresponsible rumors or anything, but you never know. I don’t think Gary Hughes was there for the garlic fries…mmmmm…garlic fries…
Or its possible
that Gary Hughes lives in the Bay Area (actually, that’s a fact) and he’s just going to a game.

Rumor: Hill for Sabathia?
The Indians are interested in trading Sabathia to the Cubs for Rich Hill. I have nothing on which to base that but my wishful thinking. That obviously makes it a legitimate rumor.

Sigh.
I wish people would stop doing this. Posting things like this is irresponsible.

It was total sarcasm...
Everyone should just relax a little bit. People like to believe they KNOW what’s going on, and so if they link Hughes to a game, they’re going to say they know what’s going on. It’s been going on for years now.
And as for the Sabathia thing…chill. Definite sarcasm.

He is credible
I actually know the guy who writes for that site… I go to the same school as him and were pretty good friends…. hes Die hard cub fan who knows what hes talking about. I cant see him making anything up. Il call him tonight to see where he got his info from…
If he's credible
then he would have cited his source.
I’m sorry, but it was an irresponsible, false post.

Yeah, I know Tim, too.
He doesn’t “make up” anything. He does post rumors that he’s heard, or things he’s read in other media. That doesn’t make them real.

I'm not saying
he’s lying. I’m saying he’s irresponsible and lazy.

I should add
in this case. I’m not familiar enough with him personally or his work to make that call. But this doesn’t give me a good opinion of his work.
But I’ll point out that MLBtraderumors.com didn’t publish this. This is coming from someone named “Eli” at mlbrumors.blogspot.com. Not Tim at our regular rumor site.

Oh, god, not that site.
That site is 100% worthless.

Tim Dierkes
Josh, you’re right, Tim wouldn’t post something like this. He’s speculated that the Cubs and Randy Winn may be a good match in the past, but never has he stated that something was gong on.
You’re exactly right, it was an irresponsible thing to write, but let’s not go overboard here in killin this guy. He did something stupid, but all it REALLY ended up being was a fake rumor on a fake site. Let’s not go overboard here.

...
I believe the Cubs might have been looking at Randy Winn, but not in the way we think. I think it probably went something like this…
The Cubs were looking at Randy Winn. Then they looked away quickly, hoping to avoid the eye contact that would automatically lead to an awkward and ultimately disappointing conversation. They weren’t quick enough…
Randy caught the Cubs eye and smiled ambling over. The Cubs thought to themselves, "Boy, he hasn’t aged well. I guess it happens to all those guys in San Francisco. Maybe it is the cold, salty air."
Randy asked the Cubs how they were doing, told them how much fun that he had in Chicago. Remember that home run he hit? Good times.
The Cubs kept thinking "Been there, done that…" Thoughts of past relations with Jerry Mumphery, Doug Glanville and Brian McRae popped into mind. Those flirtatious moments with Phil Bradley and Roberto Kelly in a misspent youth reared their heads and were quickly shot back down to the hellish darkness from whence they came. Felix Jose…. a cold chill went down the Cubs spine.
The Cubs kept pretty quiet, mostly nodding, occasionally murmuring an affirmative or negative, desperately looking for that moment in the conversation that would provide them a way out. It became awkward when Randy paused and there was that uncomfortable moment where nobody talks, just a couple of sighs, followed by a glance at a watch or a scratch of the neck.
Barry Zito walked by. The Cubs kept looking at the floor. Our of the frying pan and into the fire with him…
Then Tim Lincecum said hi. It was the out. The Cubs and Tim started chatting, and Randy soon found himself on the outside of the conversation. Then he saw the Mets looking around across the room. He ambled over….
In the middle of a good time, Truth gave me her icy kiss. Look around, you must be joking. All that way, all that way for this -Oysterband
hmm
i may be wrong but didnt the Cubs originally draft Lincecum but failed to sign him he then got drafted by the giants the next year?
You are correct.
The Cubs selected Tim with the 1261st overall pick in the 42nd round of the 2003 draft but he didn’t sign and went to college.

ah
thank you. disapointing. i wish we had him. i think the giants took him 7th overall when the drafted him. thats a big jump. kind of like how Andrew Cashner jumped up in the rounds. hopefully it turns out to be as good
True. I wish we had him too. I'm a fan. Probably won't ever happen though...

Funny thing is
I wouldn’t mind the Cubs getting Randy Winn. It’s just that the rumor was bogus.

The Internet has destroyed the credibility of trade rumors
All it takes is for one person to conjure up an intriguing trade idea and it takes off like wildfire.
Rich Harden !! 8 starts, 3-0, 47 IP, 58 Ks, 2.85 ERA
Seriously
what happened to the good ol days of MLB treade rumors being galloped into town on horseback. The damned internet has BASTARDIZED the entire trade rumor mill.
I for one cannot live like this!

meh
rumors are fun to talk about, even when they’re just speculation. even when they’re poorly informed speculation. just because a rumor has a newspaper column as a source doesn’t make it much more likely to happen than a blogger who pulls something out of his behind….
who said baseball had to be in the no fun zone?
exactly...
For Josh to call it an “irresponsible diary” is ridiculous. Why is it irresponsible? Just because there’s no credible source? We don’t work for a newspaper and we don’t need sources. If someone wants to post something, even if it is just speculation, I say post away. If Al, finds it too off topic or exaggerated, he has the power to delete it.

It's irresponsible for that exact reason.
There was NO credible source, and I don’t consider that blog credible, because he rarely gives any sources besides “friends”.
Speculate? OK, but clearly label it as speculation or guessing. That’s not what that site did.

Exactly
this individual needed to say “just speculation” and then it is not a problem at all IMO.

by Kinky Reggae on Jun 18, 2008 8:00 AM CDT up reply actions
It's irresponsible
in the same way spreading gossip is irresponsible. If you want to say “Hey, maybe the Cubs should get Randy WInn” (as I did in early May) that’s fine. But to report that the Cubs are thinking about getting Randy Winn when there is no evidence, well that’s just lying.
Maybe you think spreading lies is fun, but I don’t. I’ll be sure to take your point of view on honesty into account every time you post around here from now on.

Who are you to judge my point of view on honesty?
If you don’t think what he said was credible then your entitled to say so. There was no need to open a seperate post and trash his just to get your point across. It is not spreading lies. Spreading lies is knowing something is false and reporting on it anyways. It was spreading rumors.

Have to agree
to post this to complain and call someone out seems a bit nitpicky. However, the original post could have been done differently.
I don’t really care, it gave us something to discuss. No one here is mandated to be 100% accurate in all their posting, I don’t think.

Jim Hendry was at a Park Ridge Little League game the other night. Does that mean he’s looking for talent?
