Open Thread: Cubs vs. Rays, Wednesday 6/18, 6:10 CT
Chicago Cubs at Tampa Bay Rays, Jun 18, 2008 6:10 PM CDT
Alfonso Soriano wants to be back in time for the All-Star Game, where he is likely to be voted a starter (he's way ahead in the voting). He's been a quick healer in the past, although this injury is a bit different.
Now go get those Rays, who are one win shy of tying their franchise record for most wins by the All-Star break (and we're still almost a month away from there). Keep 'em there till Friday.

Neither of tonight's pitchers has ever faced the other team -- Andy Sonnanstine wasn't in the major leagues when the Cubs faced the then-Devil Rays in 2003, and Z didn't pitch in that series. This may be a good time to get to Sonnanstine, as he hasn't gone more than five innings in any of his last four starts, and Z, after a shaky start in LA on June 7, threw well in his last outing at Wrigley Field last Thursday.
Today's game should be available everywhere. If you don't have WGN, you can see it on ESPN (the ESPN feed will probably be blacked out in the Chicago and Tampa markets). Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Now that's
doin’ it with STYLE, SWL!
"Just because you've had enough/ doesn't mean you wanted too much." -Dean Young
If Reed beats it out or the throw goes up the line
we’re having a different discussion.
I love that we are taking these chances (although I would have done it after after a strike was thrown). I don’t think anyone was expecting the bunt.
"Every team will win 60 games, every team will lose 60 games, it's what the team does in the other 42 games that decides the season."
facepalm...
What the heck kind of defense is that? The decision to bunt with 2 outs in the last inning of a game your losing is dumb.
If there wasn’t an owl living in my toilet, I could sit down when I use it.

Yeah, and the conversation would've been...
Why does our pitcher have to hit?!
Don’t know if was covered during the game or not, but if we would’ve tied it up, the pitcher would’ve hit for the rest of the game, because Blanco was pulled for Edmonds.
"Whoever heard of the Cubs losing a game they had to have?" - Frank Chance
His numbers look A LOT less imposing than Kazmir's.
He finished last season with a 5.85/1.355/.293 (ERA/WHIP/BAA) for an ERA+ of 77. In addition to the numbers Al provides above, he currently has a BAA of .302 and an ERA+ of 85. Let’s hope the Cubs’ bats find something to feast on – especially after last night’s skimpy offerings.
Nanika Ga Okoru!
help me out...
I’m new to most of these advanced stats- what’s an ERA+?
As I understand it...
...ERA+ basically tells you where the pitcher falls in terms of league average. 100 = exactly league average, so any ERA+ above 100 makes that pitcher above average (the more, the better, obviously) and any ERA below 100 makes him below average.
I should probably make clear that I’m NOT a sabremagician, so if any of the more stats-minded folk out there want to clarify my explanation, please feel free.

Aggressive Against Sonnanstine
This guy looks to be around the strike zone. He gives up a lot of hits but not many walks. Normally, I like the patient approach. In this game, the Cubs should be hacking early in the count against Sonnanstine.

I know people disagree
but I think Reed made an interesting choice there. It had potential to work very well, but it had to go just right for us, and his execution wasn’t good. shrug

I think that there won't be many deep counts tonight
Not only is Sonnanstine a good control guy, but they mentioned on the Rays broadcast last night that the guy behind the plate tonight (name excapes me) has a “keyhole for a strike zone”.
Hope that Z doesn’t blow his top…

To paraphrase Ozzie Guillien (sorry):
If your DH is batting 8th, he shouldn’t be your DH.
That actually makes sense to me. The DH is obviously in the game for the hitting only, so shouldn’t it be a hitter that you think is going to be productive? If so, shouldn’t he be higher than 8th?
I like Dome 1st, though.

We need the DH!!
After seeing the Yankees star pitcher Wang go down for 3 months due to a baserunning injury and then seeing the Red Sox Bartolo Colon go the DL while batting during interleague games, I am convinced that the DH is needed in the NL. Pitchers are NOT everyday players and therefore are not conditioned to batting or baserunning like other position players. Do you want to risk a $100 million franchise pitcher to a season-ending injury during an at-bat? I would feel awful if Big Z got tripped up while running the bases and ends up tearing a ligament. Managers’ strategy might change somewhat with the advent of the DH, but I think club owners will sleep better knowing their investments (pitchers) are safe.
"Hey-Hey! Home Run! Attaboy Ronnie!" ~ Jack Brickhouse
i'd feel awful if someone twisted an ankle going down the stairs..

Why stop with just the pitcher
I think we should be able to use the DH for the catcher too. He has a very difficult job behind the plate and not having to focus on hitting would really help his performance.
I think perhaps CF as well. With all of the running they do in the outfield they may be too tired on the bases.
Give the catcher a chair while we're at it.

I like it exactly as it is now.
We NL-ers get to make fun of the AL for having a DH. Players who have no business playing the field anymore but can still hit have a chance to extend their careers. Interleague play lets both sides try it the other way. It’s fine with me.

The Cubs should hammer this guy....
Just like any pitcher really, but you will get pitches to hit from him. He can be very deceptive at times but doesn’t have the power stuff like Kazmir. This should be a good matchup for a well-balanced Cubs lineup.
The Loons of Capistrano are out
I’m gone for a few days (St. Louis) and the loons have overrun the board. Trade proposals for CC Sabathia centered around Matt Murton and Rich Hill is what you get when the adults leave the room.

...why do the Cubs care whether the runs they scored off of Johnson’s HR are earned or not. I could see the pitcher caring, but the hitting team????

That was just a homer crime by that scorekeeper. It wouldn’t surprise me if Halladay has an incentive clause in his contract for his ERA.

We need the DH!
So if everyone is so against the DH, maybe we should scrap instant replay as well?

And why does the DH ruin the game?
"Hey-Hey! Home Run! Attaboy Ronnie!" ~ Jack Brickhouse
Seriously?
Where do I begin? I’ll start getting my list together.
What do you think it adds to the game? And before you say “more runs” remember the fact that the AL, with a DH, has averaged ONE EXTRA RUN EVERY THIRD GAME more than the NL since the DH came around.

It affects outcome of how players are used at the end of games.
IE: henry beinging ph for & the pitcher batting later
it allows managers
to switch pitchers with impunity.
Which means a whole level of strategy is lost. Which makes the game simpler and easier. And it shouldn’t be.

Soto drives one off the top of the wall in LF, and we're talking the VERY top. Soto slides feet-first into second with a double. Just missed. 2 out.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager

Shit.
But I have a feeling this game is NOT over.
My new life, my new world, and my beautiful daughter:

Wrigley put down
I’m listening to the Tampa Bay broadcast on bus in the middle of nowhere in upstate NY. Don’t know who they are, but the TB broadcaster said Geo’s double “might have been a HR in that ballpark they play in” but in “a real big league park it’s only a double.”
Who are these guys!

idiots obviously
the statement in itself is idiotic, if it wasnt a major league park then they wouldn’t be playing the Cubs in the first place. they just look like ass clowns trying to take a dig at our park.
Someday we'll go all the way.

The Rays success must have gone to their head.

I was afraid of this series
Tampa Bay scares me. I also see them as the 2003 Marlins. Cubs, please, please prove me wrong.

we’ll see if they have the staying power. a lot of youngins on this team without any experience in this spot.
Someday we'll go all the way.
