6/17 Game Michah Hoffpauir
With runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out in the top of the ninth in last nights game, Lou pinch hit Michah Hoffpauir for Henry Blanco. Hoffpauir struckout and Reed Johnson was thrown out on a bunt attempt to end the game. The reason for Hoffpauir pinch hitting was clearly to get a lefty up against the closer Troy Percival. It seems however, that it could have been a better idea to stay with Blanco. Hoffpauir has struckout in over a third of his at bats, while Blanco is at about 20%. A strikeout was one of the only things that you didn't want to happen in that AB. Percival even in his late days with Tampa is still a power pitcher consistently striking out batters. Even Edmonds who pinch hit for the next batter Ronny Cedeno might have been a better choice if Lou wanted to stick with the left handed hitter. What are your thoughts about the move and do you think it was thr right decision?

I'm with you on this one
and commented in Al’s recap thread. I’ll add two more things on this. I didn’t read the full post-game press conference stuff, but from northsider’s post below, it seemed that once again the wrong questions are being asked of Lou. The question is not – why did Reed bunt? The questions are – why were Hoffpauir and Reed allowed to hit in the situarions they were in in the first place?
The bigger issue to me is that we are really missing Daryle Ward. Interleague is precisely when we needed him most. Here’s to hoping he’s healthy for our WS games.

You do know that...
...there’s a game recap thread to discuss stuff like this, right? No, really, it’s right here.

That's what I was thinking
He’s a contact man who doesn’t strike out much, at 18%.

I have to agree
in retrospect of course cause if he powered a ball to the alley, I would have sung his praises. The true problem was Reed running and getting caught.

Ward
The one Cub who would have been best in that spot is Darryl Ward. He makes consistent contact and could have hit a sacrifice fly, at least. Too bad the guy can’t stay healthy.
