Derrek Lee vs. Mark Grace

I was listening to the radio yesterday and the on-air personality named Mark Grace as the best 1B to ever play for either team in the crosstown classic since interleague play was introduced.  I completely agree with selection but it got me thinking about Grace vs. our current 1st basemen.

Now, I'm not interested in comparing them offensively.  Both were/are good offensive 1b but very different.  But....if we had to pick one just based on defense, who gets the vote?  I personally think DLee could win the gold glove every year and I certainly remember how good Grace was.

I guess its a pretty close call.  I think Grace may have been better picking the ball out of the dirt on wild throws, but DLee has much more range from side-to-side when fielding groundballs.  What's your call?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation, Bleed Cubbie Blue, or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief. FanPost opinions are, however, valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Derrek Lee is a vastly better ballplayer offensively and defensively.

And the first person to tell you that would be Mark Grace. In fact, he said as much when he was in the booth with Len and Bob. Grace was a good player, but Lee is just much, much better.

i bet you

mark grace would have made contact with a man on third yesterday and less then two outs DLEE is great but, he needs to bust out of this terrible slump he is striking out at an alarming rate recently

Never! He had "slumpbusters" (TM)

Remember, if Gracey went 0-for on the day, he would go find a “homely chick” and “lay the wood to her”.

As of late, his bat looks comletely obtunded.

I hope he picks it up soon. Him and Rami.

Calm down.

Yes, he's been brutal lately

for some reason he’s started to have a lot of trouble with low breaking pitches outside of the strike zone-which is where he’s being pitched most of the time.
I love Derrek Lee-I know he’s a class act, etc. but right now he has me more worried than almost anyone else-I think it might be time to seriously think about dropping him in the order-at least for a few games-he’s pretty much been killing us in the 3 hole.

Ron Santo or Pat Hughes (I'm not sure which one)

Said they were waiting for Aramis to just start crushing the ball. His homer numbers were down last year and this year. I hope he can pick it up.

No offense

But between Rami, Wood, and Dempster the LBs dropped is pretty dramatic. They all showed up at ST looking great.

Lee has been better...

Conveniently, they’ve played a similar number of games as a Cub since interleague play began:

Grace: 613 G, 2253 AB, 361 R, 687 H, 156 2B, 14 3B, 57 HR, 340 RBI, .305/.400/.462
Lee : 590 G, 2231 AB, 379 R, 679 H, 158 2B, 7 3B, 122 HR, 361 RBI, .304/.382/.545

Defensively, I’d say they were pretty much a wash (both were really good defensively). So assuming similar defense, Lee comes out ahead offensively, due largely to the difference in power.

Not that Grace was bad in any way. Just that Lee was a bit better.

by SouthernCub on Jun 19, 2008 9:45 AM CDT   0 recs

Lee by far, IMO.

His 2005 season equals about 4 Mark Grace’s BEST seasons with the Cubs.

I was never a big Mark Grace fan

because i never thought his power numbers were what you wanted from a corner infielder and #3 hitter but I also don’t remember him going into slumps as much as Lee has (this year in particular).

Offensive #s

It is interesting. I was fully inclined to agree that DLee>>Grace. However, if you look at the stats southerncub posted above, there offensive #s don’t really look that different, with the glaring exception of the HR ball.

Lee Slight Edge Defensively

As pointed out, Lee is a defender with more range. I think Lee can backhand the ball with the best of them. Grace was a great glove guy, too. He scooped a ton of balls out of the dirt. I believe I’ll take the guy with more range over the guy who has only a slightly better ability to scoop balls out of the dirt.

FWIW, the best defensive 1B I can remember is Keith Hernandez, Mark Grace’s idol. Grace spent a lot of his early years in Germantown, TN, before moving to San Diego. Gracie was a Cardinals fan. When Hernandez went to the Mets, Keith changed his uniform number from his STL #37 to NYM #17. Casey Stengel had #37 retired by the Mets. That’s why Grace wore #17.

by StevenABQ on Jun 19, 2008 10:57 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Im gonna say even

on the defensive side. Grace sold a lot of outs to the umpire, walking off before the call is made and he dealt with Shawon Dunston throwing the ball all over the place. I loved Grace, and I would probably take him over DLee because Grace made contact almost everytime. The most hits of the 90’s and hit doubles everytime he exhaled, he was sick. BUT that being said, DLEE is a class act and a perennial all-star and gold glove contender and definatley has more power than grace.. Flip a coin and Ill be happy

Lee actually hits more doubles...

The only edge Grace has is that he walks a bit more and strikes out a lot less. But Lee gets more doubles and WAY more HR, and is at least as good defensively.

by SouthernCub on Jun 19, 2008 11:26 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

D-Lee...

... is the better overall, but I believe Grace is better in a few categories. I don’t know if D-Lee will ever put up a season again as he did a few years ago. I’m especially worried about his batting average…. so in the end, I think Grace will look to be both a better contact and average hitter. He might end up being a better clutch, because Grace did get a lot of big hits in needed situations. D-Lee does too, but Grace in the 89 playoffs was a monster. Fielding wise, I think either team would be happy to have either one at 1st. I think D-Lee was lucky to be surrounded with a better fielding infield than Grace. Sure, Grace had Sandberg over at 2nd…but he also had Dunston at SS and his 101 MPH fastballs going all over the place. 3rd base was always a who’se who….

But anyway, Lee was a much bigger offensive force, no doubt about it. But Grace was better in average and maybe clutch, big game situations. One last point is that Grace thrived so much in big games, I think he motivated his team much more…. still, I doubt want to sound like I am taking anything away from Lee. I just think most people will automatically lead to him being better without really thinking much about it.

Anyway, they both ROCK and i’m glad they both have been a part of the Cubs!

by TheHawkRules on Jun 19, 2008 11:18 AM CDT   0 recs

With the focus on defense..........

.............I’d say Lee gets the nod. His range is superior and his size provides a big target for the balance of the infield.

Grace also had the pleasure of taking many throws from Sandberg, arguably the best throwing 2B in history. Had to make his life easier. Save part timers like Izturis and Neif!, there have been no Gold Glovers consistently manning the Cubs’ infiled since Lee’s arrival in Chicago.

but

he also to throws from dunston who never knew where the ball would go until grace caught it

by pickupman21 on Jun 19, 2008 11:48 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Dunston threw hard............

..............but now always wildly.

And while the sample size is small for Theriot at SS, his fielding percentage is shaping up to look a lot like Dunston’s career Cub numbers.

by tville on Jun 19, 2008 12:19 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Dunston...

...Threw hard all the time, and he was wild maybe half the time. Theriot’s fielding percentage might be “shaping up to look a lot like Dunston’s,” but Theriot seems steadier on the field. Grace, I believe, helped Dunston’s fielding percentage considerably.

1st Basemen

I think Grace was much more consistant at the plate than DLee is. I agree lee has tons more power but that was never Graces fortay. He was the guy you put up there when you need to make contact. Whether to make a productive out or to get a ralley started. DLee needs to do something about his ground outs and strike outs. Last nite he looked horrible in all his at bats. He didnt get close to anything and when he did he rolled over on it and hit a weak ground ball. He talked about always being a slow starter and now he started fast but has also went to he!! in a hand basket real fast. Rami also needs to get warm. Hopefully when they get back to Chicago and the summer heat arrives they will all join in the fun and bust out a nice long win streak and put those annoying cards behinde us and go on to october baseball.

by pickupman21 on Jun 19, 2008 11:47 AM CDT   0 recs

Grace was a fine player and fine defensive 1B.

But D-Lee is better. His height helps him grab some balls that Grace wouldn’t have gotten to, and he has really soft hands.

Offensively, Lee has more power. Grace hit for a higher average. They’re different sorts of hitters.

"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx

by Al on Jun 19, 2008 12:20 PM CDT   0 recs

Lee is a better hitter, and perhaps a better fielder...

The difference between Lee and Grace in career average (and thus career OBP) is only 20 points. But Lee is .60 points better in SLG. So if Lee is also a better fielder, then Lee is the better player. Even if they’re equivalent fielders, Lee is the better player.

by SouthernCub on Jun 19, 2008 12:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

What is up with DLee anyway?

Has there been any comments by Dlee, the Cubs, or Lou about why Lee has been having a hard time as late? I wonder, as i’m sure many people assume, that maybe his wrist is acting up? But I don’t know. It probably is something else entirely. Does anybody have any idea?

by TheHawkRules on Jun 19, 2008 1:10 PM CDT   0 recs

WELL

I personally think he is pressing right now. He isnt the #1 run producer on the team this year and hasnt been our go to guy on the team. not that we dont need him but we havent had to ride his power this year, yet. im sure we will sometime this year but up till now it has been sori and geo.

by pickupman21 on Jun 19, 2008 1:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It's not his wrist that is the problem.

Lasy year, when you could make a case that he still wasn’t at full strength, he was at least making consistent contact and getting on base-his OBP and BA were high.
This year his strikeouts are up, etc. It’s starting to look like a disturbing trend-I hope he’s not starting to decline.

Unpopular viewpoint warning...Derrek Lee has been playing like an old ballplayer for 2 mos

I don’t know what it is but Derrek Lee looks very tired out there. If I didn’t know any better I could swear that was Fred McGriff I was watching. If it were up to me then Derrek would get two or three days off to rejuvenate. Hopefully rejuvenate that is.

I agree completely.

Lately he’s been reminding me a little bit of Sandberg when he made his comeback several years ago-he suddenly started having a very hard time with breaking balls low and away-Lee’s been having the same trouble for the last month or two-this is where they’re pitching him pretty consistently and, as the result, he’s been killing us in the clutch.
I know that this is going to probably be an unpopular view, but I think it might be a good idea to consider dropping him in the order-if only temporarily.

So, now you're moving on to Derrek Lee.

You know what I'm concerned about?

I’m concerned out center fielder thinks it’s a good idea to bunt with two away in the bottom of the ninth.

I’m concerned that a rookie catcher noticed something was wrong with our ace before our pitching coach noticed there was something wrong with our ace.

I’m concerned that our SS lack the requisite range and arm to field the position.

I’m concerned that We’re going to see Andres Torres in CF before we see Felix Pie there.

I’m concerned that Rich Hill can’t throw strikes.

I’m concerned that Ronny Cedeno seems to have spent the better part of his hot streak on the bench.

I’m concerned that the other shoe is going to drop on the Ryan Dempster Show

I’m concerned that Daryle Ward hasn’t come back yet.

I’m concerned that Mark Derosa seems to have regressed defensively

And after all that, I might be smidge frustrated at Lee’s slump, but in sight of these other things, it’s no cause for concern.

Good list of concerns....

This one is most concerning to me;

I’m concerned that a rookie catcher noticed something was wrong with our ace before our pitching coach noticed there was something wrong with our ace.

Hopefully the homestand will help him right the ship

Because this how you start.

You feign concern, then crow when you think you’ve been proved right. It’s only matter of time before you’re as bilious about Derrek as you were about Sori. Mark my words.
