Andres Torres?
I'm not really familiar with this OF prospect we have down in AAA Iowa, but he seems to be putting up some very solid numbers. With all this talk of Colvin and Pie, why not give this guy a shot if Edmonds is hurt? I know he's already 30 years old and isn't a future star or anything, but his numbers this year speak for themselves.
In 56 games (166 ABs) this season, he's hitting .313 with a .417 OBP and a .917 OPS. He's got 5 HRs, 20 RBI, and he's also switch hits which is a bonus. Anyone more familiar with the Iowa Cubs know anything about this guy?

30 or not.
The numbers dont lie. Im sure theres a reason he isnt up here, but couldnt be any worse than Fontenot.

I didn't mean to call him a "prospect"...
I figured everyone in the minor leagues is a prospect by default.

That's not true.
A lot of what’s at AAA, in particular, is roster filler.
Now, Torres might actually be worth a September callup to give some flexibility on the bench. He’s not on the 40-man roster so someone would have to go, first, but there’s quite a bit of deadweight there (Jake Fox, Adam Harben, I’m talking about YOU).

I don’t think this fanpost is going to get you to the show before September any sooner.

We've got our quota of old minor leaguers already with the big club.
Hoffpauir or Fontenot will have to go down for Torres to come up.

I say...
Give him a shot if Edmonds has to go on the D.L.

Groan
The Triple A Cubs have become a wasteland for journeyman….Hoffpauier, Dubois, Broussard, Murton, Torres.
GET Rich Harden !! 9 starts, 4-0, 53 IP, 67 Ks, 2.53 ERA

Murton=Journeyman
Really? He has been with the Cubs/Cubs system and the Red Sox system. Journeyman…..ahh no.

Was thinking the same thing, Hammer.
Technically he is a Journeyman as he journeys between Des Moines and Chicago…
by Tangled Up In Blue on Jun 19, 2008 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
NO
a journey man is someone who travels to multiple teams in a long career i.e. Kenny Lofton who if Edmonds is hurt is who the cubs should sign and i would rather just bring up Brosuard then Torres.
p.s. the Cards just got swept by the Royals lets win tonight and those two losses really mean nothing

EVERY Triple-A team is like that.
Most teams have their top prospects at Double-A.

Is there a specific reason for this?
Isn’t AAA where the better competition would be?

No...AAA is where all the "journeymen" whoe aren't good play.
Didn’t you understand what Al said?

I think the better competetion would be in AAA...
...whereas the better prospects are at AA. AA seems to be more of a confidence booster to a select few young talent who could easily make the jump to the big club.
Clayton Kershaw and Justin Upton are examples of this.
Help me Obi-ONEDEC. You're our only hope.

I understood that part
I just didn’t know if there was a specific reason why all the good prospects were kept at AA.
"Very adroit in the outfield." - Lou, on Dome
by gwood on Jun 19, 2008 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The reason is...
they don’t want them getting inflated numbers playing against the inferior competition of the AAA players.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.
by santoswoodenlegs on Jun 19, 2008 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
nonsense...
...in the PCL at least, the hitters are far more fierce, and the stepping stone for the ultra-majority of major league clubs is to test their hitters and pitchers out in PCL parks, which are far less forgiving than those of their AA counterparts.
It’s all a confidence thing with their prospects. The majority of MLB teams will keep their prospects in AA to work on fundamentals and basically rake, instead of busting their confidence in AAA before making the jump.
The average age of the Iowa Cubs is 24.9… hardly a journeyman’s league.
Help me Obi-ONEDEC. You're our only hope.

Differences Between AAA and AA
AAA does have a lot of journeymen, who are as good as they are going to get. AA players aren’t as good as AAA players, but a lot more AA players than AAA players haven’t reached their full potential yet. Yeah, the 30-year AAA journeyman may be better than the 20-year old AA prospect this year. That 20-year AA prospect stands to be better than the 30-year AAA journeyman ever was down the line. AAA is more about proven ability. AA is more about potential.

I usually ignore your spewing
but this one is too good. Do you realize that this is common practice? Didn’t your NIU baseball coach teach you that?
Boston’s AAA team includes Keith Ginter (age 32), Joe Thurston, Bobby Kielty, Kyle Snyder, Miguel Ascenio and Michael Tejera.
The Cardinals have D’Angelo Jiminez, Josh Phelps, John Wasdin (age 35), Cliff Politte and believe it or not 38 y.o. Juan Gonzalez on the DL.

He just got off the DL
Torres has hit consistently this year, and there were rumors that the Cubs were considering promoting him earlier in the year, before they acquired Edmonds. He would have been an Angel Pagan type, a true fifth outfielder. His style of play and batting is not as susceptible to a huge dropoff at the major league level, like a big power hitter.
I agree, he’s not a prospect, but it’s worth knowing who he is. This is the kind of guy who could fill in for a couple weeks off the bench if Edmonds goes on the DL. I don’t think the Cubs will promote Pie until they are ready to play him regularly (which may be never for all I know).

Teams like Kansas City take a flyer on a guy like Torres
But a team like the Cubs? A strong team with a viable shot at the playoffs? No.
