Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Enough with Tampa

We went into this series sleepwalking.  Silly mistakes, and maybe reading the headlines too much.  Lazy, Lolligagin' idiots this trip to Tampa.   I've heard the "newness to that dome" argument this week, and I'm not buying.

Tampa's a good team, with tough throwers and good defense, and above avg. hitting, but there's no excuse for our lack of runs and attention in the field this series.  Laughable.  If I were Lou, I'd have this team running at Wrigley Friday early.

I hope we beat the daylights out of the Sox.

Agreed

Doesn’t matter that it is the Sox, they need to take 2 of 3 just to get back on track, just take care of business. Doesn’t mean more because it is the Sox, but I completely agree they looked horrible from Day 1 in Tampa not the Cubs we have seen this season. Fortunately the Cards got swept too and looked awful against the Royals.

Unfortunately...

The Brewers swept the Jays and are starting to look better, but the division is still easily the Cubs if Big Z is fine.

by brewfan2 on Jun 19, 2008 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions

but gave up 7 runs in the final 3 innings, a win is a win for the Brewers, however their bullpen is not very good

by rtraugs25 on Jun 19, 2008 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually

Their bullpen has been very good of late and the guy that gave up most of the runs is probably headed down when Gagne comes back. Gagne probably isn’t much better, but if you take out turnbow and gagne’s numbers, they have one of the better bullpens in the NL.

by brewfan2 on Jun 19, 2008 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah and if you

take out Marmol’s and Erye’s perfromances last night the Cubs win the game. Unfortunately you can’t take numbers out of a pullpen, out of a staff, out of a lineup, and say if you do this… they have one of the best (fill in the stat here) in the league. Given the way managers use their bullpens these days, everyone in the pen matters.

by DenverCub on Jun 20, 2008 9:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Except Turnbow isn't in the pen anymore and Gagne has been gone for 3 weeks.

So it’s very easy to take their names out of the pen when indeed they are not in the pen.

Tampa Bay is a good ballclub

Tampa Bay is a very good looking ballclub. Loads of impressive young power pitchers to go along with super-duper youngsters in Carl Crawford, BJ Upton, Dionar Navarro and Evan Longoria.

The Rays are a team to be reckoned with.

Which is why I'm happy we won't play them again for 3-4 years

at least in the regular season

This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

As long as we're there, I don't care who we play

+WS

I'm thinking you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling, so why don't we just ignore each other til we go away.

by neverAcquiesce on Jun 20, 2008 8:11 AM CDT up reply actions

I disagree

Games 1 and 2 were good ballgames, tough pitching and clutch outs on both sides. tonights game featured a single terrible inning that cost the game..

TB is a good team..give them credit

the Cubs as well, are a good team and will bounce back. hopefully the pitching will hold up, and we can get healthy soon

by LuisSalazar on Jun 19, 2008 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

LSA.

The first two games and the first 6.5 innings of tonight’s game were close contests. The bullpen just completely, utterly collapsed in the seventh. Obviously the Rays are a good team. So are the Cubs.

Agreed 100%

I didn’t see anything in this series – other than Zambrano leaving early – that has me worried about this team.

Any normal outing by Marmol and Eyre has us staving off the sweep. Even great relievers have bad days.

We fought back from early deficits in all 3 games. All 3 were close ballgames. There’s nothing to panic about here. Get a grip people.

by Wreckard on Jun 20, 2008 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions

One play cost us the game all three nights

I wouldn’t say that is looking like ass. The Pirates looked like ass, the Cardinals looked slightly assish, the Blue Jays have had some serious ass tendancies – The Cubs played will for 2 2/3 ballgames this series. Two key errors + two at bats that really bothered me (Hoff in the 9th in game 1 and Lee tonight with runners on 2&3 with 1 out) were all that cost us until Marmol fell apart tonight.

This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

I suppose i am used to seeing a team that scores the needed runs

and comes back when they are down. I felt absolutely no glimmer of hope throughout this entire series. Poor defense lead to several runs that broke games. DeRosa, Cotts, Lee, Ramirez. Poor defense was abundant this series and this doesn’t inspire confidence. The scores reflected much closer contests that I feel they were.

The Cubs were simply not the Cubs we have seen all season long IMO. I panic not though. They will turn it around starting today.

Calm down.

And sweep the Sux so I can brag to a few friends (or a lot).

sure the games were close

at least until the bad inning last night, but the Cubs still did not really “have it”. Rays did have some good pitching, but the Cubs countered with some terrible at bats. It seems like there was little to no scouting of the Rays pitchers at all. I think Derrek just swung at another slider away

Can I get a show of hands...

of people who think that Rays “fans” are the most obnoxious group of dopes out there?

They acted like they had just won the world series, not after the game was over, but after ever out!

I think they will go back to being quiet

now that the Cubs fans won’t be showing them up in their own park anymore

by siwook on Jun 20, 2008 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Can you really blame them...

The Devil Rays have been horrendous from their initiation as a franchise. I think it’s great that they are finally achieving success.
