"Pitching is KING"

Like I've said time and time again, pitching is KING in baseball.   And like former manager Dick Williams used to say, "there is no such thing as a team having too much good pitching."   I think we are starting to see the importance of pitching.

Those of us with brains and objective sense have recognized since the start that this team has screaming need for another primetime starter.   If we lose Carlos Zambrano for a long time?    Well, that will be devastating.   Regardless the situation with Z the imperative is for Hendry to make a blockbuster move for a Rich Harden, CC Sabathia or AJ Burnett type.   Otherwise 2008 will go down as yet another disappointing season.

The bullpen?   Well, I get skewered for the thought, but I have little faith in Bob Howry.   He's all used up.   Scott Eyre?   Well, we saw tonight just how reliable he really is.   He is nothing more than a loogy at this stage.  A loogy that you wince at everytime he is brought into a ballgame?   Michael Wuertz?   Not good.   And classic example of how ERA is poor stat in and of itself for a relief pitcher.   So Hendry needs to get another bullpen arm too.

We can sit and live in denial that a rotation of Dempster, Lilly, Marquis and Gallagher following up Zambrano is good enough to win October baseball.   Or to even get this team to the playoffs.   We can also sit and live in denial about the strength of this bullpen once you get past Carlos Marmol and Kerry Wood.

Jim Hendry....GET this team a primetime starting pitcher as well as another quality bullpen arm.   And do it soon.   I could really care less if you have to significantly mortgage the future to engineer these needed trades.   Just do it.

hes actually been around.

for awhile. he just seems to pop out when the opportunity arises to be negative.

that being said I do agree with him to an extent.

I don’t think we have enough pitching WITH a healthy Z let alone without a healthy Z.

Where is it going to come from ? I don’t know, but something will need to be done.

What would those options be for a team gunning for a World Series?

Sean Marshall? Please. Rich Hill? He can no longer find the plate.

This team is poised to be a solid World Series contender in 2008. This team is built to win NOW. Therefore it is time to pull out all the stops and significantly upgrade this pitching staff while there is a reasonable chance to do so.

GET RICH HARDEN. I’ll settle for A.J. Burnett. I may also settle for Derek Lowe.

Harden

I would love Harden but what package do you think Oakland is going to take for that guy? I think the other teams looking for more pitching (Red Sox, Yankees) can put together alot better packages than the Cubs can. AJ Burnett, Randy Wolfe may be more likely names that we can get.

by jeff_pico on Jun 19, 2008 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions

You're right

I can’t believe there are people who actually think we have guys in the minors who are going to come up and put us over the top in a pennant race.
If Hendry doesn’t go out and get us starting and relief help (easier said than done, I know) this is going to go down as his biggest failure as a GM.

I actually agree that Rich Hill

has almost made himself valueless. He needs to get it together to be traded for a more consistent pitcher. Cmon Rich, a true Cub does what it takes to help the team!

If you had posted this morning

You could just have easily bitched that Cubs could not get key hits with runners on
and THAT is why they lost the first two games of the series.. FYI I do admire your
request for an A.J Burnett “type’ as A,J himself got hit bad tonight

pitching

As crazy as it seems…we have better pitching than most of the other teams in the league…espicially our division. Losing Zambrano for more than a couple of starts will hurt, and I’m sure Hendry will look for improvements. I have no problem trading away some of our ‘prospects’ since we’ve never had a good track record of turning prospects into good major leauge players anyway.

Tonight’s game was just 1 loss. A bad loss but it doesn’t change that overall we have a good team.

by jeff_pico on Jun 19, 2008 9:27 PM CDT reply actions

Not reacting to one loss, or a series sweep

Rather I am reacting to the fact that this pitching staff needs to be strengthened. We are never going to have a chance like 2008….a weak National League, a great lineup, several key lineup members at the zenith of their careers, Dempster pitching out of his mind, Wood healthy, Marmol outstanding.

When you have a team teed up like this one is then you pull out all the stops.

I've said

since last winter we needed a good #2. I can’t trust Z. Not sure if Demp will hold up. Lilly is OK but I remember last year too well. Sure I’ll take another starter. It MUST be the right person and until we find a trading partner it’s just conjecture. I just hope we can find a nasty stud to take us all the way. If I were a time traveler and could say everything will be OK then great. But I just don’t see the WS with our staff. This is a very good team we have. What will put us over the top? My opinion is a starter.

Also I learned some things tonight

I was critical of Marmol pitching every day. Now, after that horrible performance tonight, he may need to pitch a lot, but shorter outings would be better. #2 was that Gallagher may be better than we think. He may be really something if he can keep it up and not lose his “mojo”. #3 We need to pound the Sox. #4 Looks like Marshall is coming back up.

There's a difference between worthless and ready to contribute in a pennant race.

I have no doubt that we have more than a few genuinely promising guys in the minors but, if it gives us a better chance of winning this year, I have no trouble rolling the dice and trading some of them.
As somebody already mentioned, our track record of developing prospects isn’t exactly encouraging anyway. I’ve lived through way too many rebuilding programs in my Cubs’ lifetime. I, for one, am sick of hearing about the future. I want to win now.

Wow-that was clever

how long did it take you to come up with that one?

And, yeah, you’re right-with all of the gems our farm system has constantly produced over the years, we’d be crazy to make any trades at all for established major leaguers in the midst of a pennant race.

Btw-I’m not necessarily saying make a trade for Rich Harden-what I am saying though is that Hendry is going to have to make a trade for a solid starting pitcher if this team wants to have a real shot at making noise in the post season. that starting pitcher could be Sabathia, Harden…Bedard (who I’ve also read has injury issues) or Greinke…but he has to get somebody.

I’ve only been on this site since spring training so I don’t get all the knee jerk “Blue Mike hatred”. All I know is he made sense in this post and that’s what I’m reacting to.

we're just now getting out farm rebuild.

And Soto and Marmol are both products of the farm system. So’s Kerry Wood, isn’t he?

I have no issue trading away some prospects. I will sit solidly in the “no” column, however, on giving away EVERYTHING to try and get a pitcher like Rich Harden, who will most likely be on the DL before the year is out.

We had Mark Prior in a Cubs uniform. We don’t need another one.

With all this talk

About going for broke this year, how has anyone not mentioned yet that trading our farm for Rich Harden would do just about everything BUT go all in for the year. There’s a reason Blue Mike’s tagline on Harden’s season stats hasn’t changed. HARDEN IS INJURED. He is the next coming of Prior, and trading him for all our prospects won’t help the club, it’ll hurt. If this trade happened, come September, you’ll have no AAA players good enough to fill out the roster, and Rich Harden serving as one expensive waste, injured and sitting on the bench.

look at the Roberts trade rumors

Gallagher was the center piece and now we cannot afford to trade him. Quiet frankly, trading away your future just for one season is not the way to go. IE look at the Red Sox. They lost two great prospects last season for that Gagne trade.

Harden isn't currently injured.

He’s actually pitching very well, but he does have some peripherals-GB/FB ratio, LD%-that should raise eyebrows, considering he’ll be going from Oakland, a very pitcher-friendly environment, to Wrigley, which, for the most part, is a pretty hitter-friendly. Plus, his Road ERA is already a full run higher than his home ERA.

Bullpen a problem on this team

When the Cubs don’t have Marmol on board, then there is no bullpen. Kerry Wood doesn’t deserve that, but they aren’t going to get close games to him without good middle relief and setup pitchers.

I don’t feel the same kerplunk in the rotation. Zambrano might not be out long and the staff has been coming through better than they did in the early part of the season. Sure I would like Sabathia. Truth be told, I’m waiting for Dempster to look in the mirror.

Not to be a jerk, but this board would be alot better without MDBNIU posts.

Plus

who do we remove from the rotation if we do make a trade?

Zambrano -3.13 era
Dempster-2.76 era
Lilly-4.76 era(7-2, 3.53 era in last 11 starts)
Marquis-4.24 era
Gallagher-3.97 era(even lower if you take away his first spot start)

Honestly most teams would have too have those type of numbers from guys in their rotation. I’m not saying I wouldn’t mind adding another pitcher, but mostly for the playoffs. This rotation is without a doubt good enough to make it to the postseason with. As for Scott Eyre the guy gave up his first run in 30 plus games the other day, having a bad game doesn’t make him suck. Bob Howry isn’t all used up either, he was pitching simliar to this around this time last year, and was lights out in the second half.

What team has two certifiable aces?

Zona – Webb & Haren
Boston – Beckett & Dice-K

I just looked through the list, and you can argue for a few teams here and there, depending on if you’re basis is careers or performances this year, but there are NOT many teams with two aces, or as this post mentions, “blockbuster”-value guys. I’m not sure if a real “ace” is plausible.

We need to get Harden or Sabathia. Burnett is NOT good. He is not a lockdown #2 pitcher.

“But he throws fast!!” says the incompetent cubs fan.

“So what” I say. He is injury prone and sure as hell isn’t worth trading legit prospects for.

No you could say Harden is injury prone, and he is, but this is cost benefit analysis. When he is healthy he doesn’t lose, and so far he is looking VERY healthy. The playoffs aren’t about rotation eras, its about having 2 lockdown starters.

He was never supposed to be a front-end starter, more like a middle of the rotation guy- a guy like that under club control is extremely valuable though in terms of payroll flexibility. And if he does develop that good breaker to both lefties and righties, he could definitely be more of a front-line guy.

MDBNIU hasn't noticed...

... that the A’s are 3.5 games out of first place. They’re in playoff contention. If Harden’s that good, why would they trade him?

What did we say about logic, Al?

I'm thinking you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling, so why don't we just ignore each other til we go away.

Rich Harden contract

How much moula would Rich Harden cost us?

by cubgrace17 on Jun 20, 2008 8:49 AM CDT reply actions

Much more than it's worth -

1. Top prospects for potential high dollar/frequent DL pitcher2.
2. Higher than budgeted expense for Towel laundering
3. Possiblity for MBDNIU to get what he wants and be correct.

Patience Please... relax!

It was bound to happen. Oh shit, call 60 minutes, the Cubs have lost 3 in a row…..for the first time in over 70 games. Oh BTW, the last of the 30-team MLB circuit to do that.

A little sloppy pitching…Marmol last night? I mean come on…everyone was bitching a week ago about him being overworked. Now he got 4 days rest and couldn’t hit the broad side of barn; hit an opposing player on consecutive AB’s but not the broad side of a barn. A few missed opportunities in hitting…D-Lee struck out and A-Ram 7-iron sliced to right on the first pitch after they got 3 in the 7th. This shit is going to happen on occassion during a ONE-HUNDRED-SIXTY-TWO game season.

This whole series in that covered-up shithole they looked out of sync. Could have been that awful travel day Monday, just to wait for a rainout, who knows. The more important things are how Johnson, Edmonds and especially Z recover from what hurts them.

There’s going to be a boatload of trade opportunities out there come the last 2 weeks of July. It’s still a little too early to tell but things are starting to take form. I don’t see a blockbuster but Hendry DOES HAVE trading chips. Let’s just see how they play this weekend. See if they’re fundamentally sound in all facets of the game.

it's nice how you

complain when the cubs are losing and then shut up when the cubs are winning and are proven wrong

MDBNIU,

I honestly don’t understand all the hatred directed toward you from so many on this blog. We are all Cub fans here and we want the team to win. I don’t agree with some of your points, but some I do agree. So what? This isn’t nuclear science, it’s baseball. You have a right to your opinion just like everyone else.

With that said, no, I do not believe the Cubs need to make a move for pitching. Our starters, or the last month, have been outstanding, and our bullpen has been solid as well (last night being the exception). I think we should stand pat with what we’ve got. We have the best record in baseball, and we still have the lead in the Central. Fine tuning – especially on defense – yes, but major moves, no.
By the way, I like the suggestion of Lieber taking Z’s starts. I have visited some other blogs of other teams and there’s been a lot of fan interest in trading for Lieber. He’s a veteran who can pitch, let’s use him.

Don't blow it boys!

by Mr W on Jun 20, 2008 6:48 PM CDT reply actions

I'm with you on using Lieber...

... at least for the time being. For now, they could move everyone back and just skip Z’s turn on Tuesday, using the off day. After the next time through the rotation, if Z isn’t ready, then Lieber could step right in, and they can retroactively DL Z, and call up someone else for the bullpen (return of Hart?).
