Mike North is an Idiot...
I'm on my way to work this morning, and I tune in to The Score to hear Mike North rambling on about how Scott Linebrink is a better reliever than Carlos Marmol. His evidence to support his argument is that Linebrink's ERA is a tad lower than Marmols (1.12 vs. 1.64).
I don't mind people having different opinions, but what happened next is just disgusting. Two Cubs fans call in to defend Marmol and to enlighten Mr. North that ERA is not the greatest tool of effectiveness for a reliever. One caller explains to him that numbers such as holds, opponents batting average, runs allowed, etc. are much more accurate gauges of a setup man's effectiveness than ERA. North then procedes to call these men "assholes" and belittles them as being "typical moron Cubs fans", trying to skew the stats to make a case for their guy.
I think Mike North needs to win today's "Just Shut Up" award.

Mike North up close and personal said:
“This is a radio show”! The show is about him and him getting ratings, not about him being correct, it is about him getting people to listen. If you think he is an idiot and you listen than you are hooked.
Now of all the Score or ESPN 1000 personalities Buffone had the most personal credibility whom I also have met and even worked with on some projects before 2000.
Next time you call up Mikey….ask him what are the respective records of the men in blue and those who wear black.

Absolutely.
I’ve learned more about the Cubs, and baseball in general, from hanging out here than I ever have (or could) listening to the Score.

Listening to Mr. North right now going on how the Cubs having the best record in baseball means nothing because they are in the National League. Oh well…I guess thats what I get for tuning him in.

Our options are limited...
We need a Cubs friendly morning sports talk show.

Some of the thignas he says need to be said and without a personality like Blue Mike who takes a negative standpoint on topics these boards could become very dull, he does a good job of bringing up ANY small negative about this baseball team.

The biggest problem, IMO,
is that he voices his opinion in absolutes. Everyone’s opinion is important and adds to the discussion. But, when its “always this” and “never that” and refusing to budge from that position, that’s what gets tiresome, IMO.

Who Cares What Mike North Says
Give the man your “shut up” award. Then turn your dial on your radio and make sure you never listen to the man again. So much of television/radio has no constructive talks… they just like to verbally shred whatever they can. This is what gets them short term ratings… Just find something else to listen too, and hopefully enough Cub fans will change the channel to hurt his ratings and he’ll learn to be a better steward of his mouth.

Murph
I actually stream the score here in MN during the day (as long as the Cubs aren’t playing that afternoon), and I would have to agree. Whether its the Cubs or not, callers who do not agree with North, or Boers and Bernstein for that matter, are automatically labeled as idiots or morons and generally get hung up on.

Yup, all of the big networks hate the cubs. Are you serious? If the cubs made a run at the world series, it would be the biggest ratings push those outlets EVER had. Do you really think they don’t know this? Television is a business and ratings rule the roost. The cubs making a push for the world series is the national media’s best friend.

ESPN Radio
local programming at least, seems pretty fair to me. The afternoon show with Mac Jurko and Harry (2 out of 3 of them Cubs fans) has plenty of Cubs talk that is very fair based on what is happening on the field at the time. I think there’s also a morning show with Waddle with lots of good Cubs talk.

From outside of Chicago
the Cubs get a lot more love nationally than most teams. Even in losing seasons, major Cubs moves make the national news (ESPN, SI.com, etc). Most teams don’t get that level of treatment.

Mike North deserves every day's "just shut up" award
I used to like the Score when Mike Murphy was on in the morning, but Mike North is unlistenable. I would really enjoy a more neutral local morning sports radio show, as it is now I listen to Mike and Mike on ESPN, but outside of thier Stone Cold Lead Pipe Locks and football talk, they’re really just background noise. I don’t care about ultimate fighting or hockey or the Celtics/Lakers or most national stories, so I don’t get why the third largest sports market in the country can’t get their own morning show.
I love Mac, Jurko, and Harry though. Mac is the kind of Sox fan I like, a smart baseball fan who just tells it like he sees it – not a Cubs hater (North) or always negative (Boers and Bernstein). I don’t like how Harry plays both sides of the fence so much, but he’s a smart baseball guy and says what I’m thinking as a fan a lot. I also love having Jurko’s perspective as a former pro – which is why I like Mike and Mike sometimes. Even though these three guys are fans, they present the truth in an unsensationalized way.
BTW – From listening to Mac lately, it sounds like North’s days may be numbered anyway.

I've gotten that vibe from Mac, too.
I think North has just pissed off too many people. Outside of Mac, Jurko, and Harry and Waddle and Silvie (though those two have their odd moments) sports radio in this town is pretty piss-poor.

Just this past Friday, I listened to Boers and Bernstein gush all over the cubs offense. They routinely bash the other teams in the division saying the cubs are by and far the best team in the league. Boers has claimed the cubs as the national league champion since spring training.
If you think they hate the cubs and are constantly negative about the team, then you obviously don’t listen to the show.

I’m not saying they’re negative about the Cubs – I’m saying they’re negative about everything – all the time. Everything is stupid, everyone is an idiot, and there’s nothing that doesn’t suck to these guys.

The only reason Mike North ever talks about the Cubs
is because he’s obligated to.
His show is crap. His nasally voice makes my ears bleed. He always interrupts his co-host when he’s trying to talk and he interrupts news updates with these stupid comments. The show isn’t very professional. I know he’s probably going for the whole everyman radio personality, but not every man is a blowhard like he is. He’s all about ratings, and they tried to up the ratings by going into more of a general talk show format where he talked about movies and politics, but he always ended up looking like a complete tool. He really isn’t as smart as he thinks he is.
One of the only Score personalities I liked was J. Hood. He’s a Sox fan but always gave the Cubs their due. Now he’s on ESPN 1000, which I was happy for.

Mike North is good for a laugh,
because he operates under a number of false impressions. Most notably, that the National League is inferior to the American League. Now, just looking at the statistics, (that he so dutifully trots out), it may look as though this is the case. However, North only shows his ignorance because he downplays the NL; saying that they should be so much better statistically because they get to face the pitcher, instead of another hitter. Logically, this argument is flawed from the get-go, mainly in that one can not draw comparisons when there is nothing to compare it to. One can assume, (make an ass out of themselves), this, but in order to make a comparison and draw logical assumptions, you must have equal sides. Now North would call me an idiot, but that’s ok. I went to college for Philosophy, whereas Mike North used to sell hot dogs until his big mouth got him a job.

The Score and The Cubs
go back a long way. IIRC, there was something involving Mark Grace not talking to The Socre guys in the early 90’s. SInce then, I think the coverage of the Cubs by them has been very biased.
However, North is an idiot. He’s a grade A idiot in fact. I don’t listen often, but I did get a taste a few weeks ago when he was talking about (of all things) politics! They were talking about McCain and specifically about McCain’s mother. They mentioned how she is continuously brought out so that the campaign could underscore that though McCain is 72, he’s a young 72. Look at how young and vibrant his mother is.
So, North questioned, with an accusatory tone, as to why the Obama campaign was hiding Obama’s mother. Why, he asked, was she never put in front of the media. Oh, I don’t know, Mike. Maybe it’s because she died of ovarian cancer in 1995.
He’s a tool. A complete tool. But White Sox fans must love him. He gets ratings.

He did call Jae Kuk Ryu
a “chinaman” and tried to defend himself, saying the world has gotten too sensitive. I guess he was missing the point seeing as Ryu is KOREAN and not CHINESE.

I actually heard that broadcast too
and finally, someone called in to correct him on it. He didn’t really apologize, he just said more along the lines that “Why doesn’t Obama let people know his mother is dead?” I hate when these guys bring up political issues because A) they are all obviously right-wing biased (Huebner grow a sack, Jen shut your trap and just read the traffic reports) and B) it’s a freakin’ sports talk radio show, not Rush Limbaugh in the mornings. Gah, I hope he gets canned.
I don’t mind Boers and Bernstein much, actually

the problem is that
North’s whole bit is based on ridiculous, dim-witted opinions designed to generate maximum controversy which, unfortunately, seems to be working.
I haven’t listened to him since his days with Dan Jiggets. The best way to handle him is to turn the dial, keep it turned and ignore.

Northie-
The big Sox fan. He rips into them, even though they are in first place in a weak AL Central, (how ‘bout that for a surprise!) He failed this morning to state, or understand for that matter; that a few hits in just a couple of those games at the orange peel v. Tampa & they could have come home 2-2 or 3-1 from Tampa. No, he doesn’t even mention this, he always says that he is tough on the Sox b/c he is a life long fan, and wants them to win. Then he mentions in the same breath that Cubs fans are idiots because we don’t tear down our team for their “betterment” as he does the Sox. Well. if this an example of a Sox fan, count me out… I won’t root against them, and might even root for them from time to time – but I’ll never go over to the dark side.

Can he get more original material?
All I heard this morning from North was him whining why the Cubs are getting so much media coverage, and that they don’t deserve any of it. For a guy who grew up in the city, how can he not already know that it’s always gonna be like that, whether he likes it or not? Why beat a dead horse over and over and over again, especially on a “professional” radio format? I swear I was listening to some punk kid outside the Cell with all his moaning this morning.
Then he goes on to say the Cubs best record in the MLB means nothing, because the NL are the triple AAA of baseball. In other words, nothing should be written about the Cubs win streak and record because we are A) in the NL B) in June and C) not his beloved White Sox.
I wish there were more options in the morning. Mike and Mike are just plain cheesy, so I usually just resort to music/podcasts. Give North the boot 670!
