Chicago Cubs at San Diego Padres, Jun 2, 2008 9:05 PM CDT

Next Game

Chicago Cubs
@ San Diego Padres

Monday, Jun 2, 2008, 9:05 PM CDT
Petco Park

Carlos Zambrano vs Cha Seung Baek

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing out to right field at 5-15 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 70.

Complete Coverage >

Ready for eight? The Cubs have not won eight or more in a row since the 12-game winning streak in 2001, which is the longest in my lifetime. Other numbers they could surpass: at 15 games over .500, the Cubs are at their highest point over .500 since the last day of the 2004 season, when they were 89-73, sixteen over. They can match that today. The high point of that year was 87-66, 21 over before they lost 7 of their last 9. And before that, you'll have to go back to the last day of the 1989 NL East title season, when they finished that year 93-69, 24 games over .500, also the high water mark of that year.

Ain't this fun?

News item: the US Supreme Court will not hear MLB's appeal of the fantasy baseball ruling that went against them in federal appeals court:

A federal court and the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis ruled in favor of the fantasy baseball business, saying that enforcing state law rights would violate C.B.C.'s right of free speech protected by the First Amendment.

The case is Major League Baseball Advanced Media v. C.B.C., 07-1099.

The Cubs have faced Baek a couple of times in spring training the last two years, but never during the regular season. The only Cubs he has faced are two he faced in the AL, Mark DeRosa (1-for-6) and Reed Johnson (2-for-5). Johnson will probably not start tonight. Baek has allowed more HR than Z in about 1/3 as many innings.

Z, for his part: well, just keep up the good work. He has never allowed a run in 14 IP at Petco, and no current Padre hits him well. This ought to be a real good night for Z, if those patterns hold.

Today's game is on CSN in Chicago, Cox Cable 4 (right, SDSJM?) in San Diego, and at the MLB.com Mediacenter.

I have a feeling

Z will be on a pitch count after his last 130 pitch outing. Anyone else agree?

Z might be on a pitch count...

... but I anticipate lots of ground balls from him tonight. He’s been low in the strikeout category this year, so he should go deeper into the game with less pitches. We need a great outing from Z tonight to give Marmol a night off! Or at least a blowout (in our favor of course).

Z is always on a pitch count

If you look at his games this year, and basically for the majority of his career, Z is taken out of games not because he runs out of gas but because he reaches certain pitch counts.

Yes, and he wants to impress Greg Maddux.

"ground balls from him"

this is something Brenly says all the time too. Technically, the ground ball will hopefully come from the batter. If Z is “throwing” ground balls, it may be a long night. :-)

But I get your point. Go Z and Go Cubs! I think Z will only get 90-95 pitches so make the most of them.

Eight would be great!!!

Baseball can be very strange

Ryan Dempster had a 3-16 record and 4.77 ERA between 2006 and 2007, and look how he’s doing now. In the end things will even out, and you’ll see (in this case) a regression to the true talent level. The thing is that sometimes a full season can still be sort of “flukish”... so who knows, maybe one of them will continue pitching well for the rest of the year.

You have to give the Cardinals credit though. They have been one of the top organizations in NL for a long time. They figure out how to get it done.

by GoCubbies34 on Jun 2, 2008 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions

not dumb but sentimental

I have always rooted for the Cubs over Maddux but I can’t stand his constant no decisions with
the Padres. I want to get to 355 wins ( I did not care a rat’s ass about 350) so he passes THE EVIL ONE and at the rate the Padres support him with runs or bullpen he may never. Jaime Moyer has
an ERA nearly two points higher than Maddux but has twice as many wins

Trust me I know it is a bad thought I don’t expect ANYONE to agree with it but if they won
the next two I want him to get a win.

Here is what I REALLY WANT

Maddux gets caught in some incredible traffic jam coming from the beach house
or Peavy gets activated or ANYTHING that gets Maddux to push back the start for a day
that is not related to a physical problem. Not only would he NOT face the Cubs but he would
pitch the following day IN NEW YORK and I could see him. Yankees an Padres play a four game
series and JUST MY LUCK Maddux won’t pitch in it if the rotation stands. He WOULD have but
they pushed him up a day last week when they had a day off . Why not pitch him every fiftth
DAY instead of every fifth game when you only have two reliable starters
GRRRR.

Maddux

He gets lots of no decisions because he seems incapable of going more than 6 innings these days. I guess it’s because he’s 42. I have him on my fantasy team, so I am especially tired of N-Ds. One of the reasons I’m way back in wins.

...we are on fire, playing a very, very bad team. Our ace and #2 are starting, and we need to beat teams like these, during stretches like these, on the road. The Padres have a former #1 (now #3) in Maddux, and two #4/#5 going. This should be a sweep.

Some comparisons

Giles batting numbers looks like Fukudome’s only with more walks. I mean he has more walks than anyone on the Cubs. Definitly don’t nibble with him.

Gonzalez on the other hand has Lee like numbers only with more HRs and more strikeouts. He’s the only guy I would advocate a little nibbling with.

No one else on the Pads hits better than Fontenot, Z, or Edmonds (with the Cubs).

By the way, Edmonds with the Cubs with his small sample size and cold streak and recent better hitting, has a .258 .303 .484 .787 split. That’s shocking to me.

"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."

by californiachicagoan on Jun 2, 2008 6:57 PM CDT reply actions

Giles has 38 walks.

Fukudome has 35, leading the Cubs. Three other Cubs have 29 or more. They’re doing just fine with walks (2nd in the NL to the Cardinals).

I guess that depends on why you think The Riot regressed at the end of last year:

was it exhaustion or the league catching up with him? I personally think it was the latter, the kids got a motor and I think he’s good to go all year long.

Ron Santo should sing TMOTTBG everyday. Period.

I think the league started to catch up and to Ryan’s credit he seemed to make adjustments and is back over 300.

I've got a good feeling about DLee tonight.

I think only playing 5 innings on Friday and the off day yesterday, I think that he will get a few hits tonight and mabey a homer. He should have a good game tonight.

Gameday Audio

My Gameday is so far behind you guys. Ah, the woes of not getting CSN Chicago.

Z’s birthday was Sunday. I wonder if he’s tired from that, or something.

Incidentally, Len just mentioned this

Len said that Barrett gave Z a little pat as Z came to the plate. I think it’s safe to say that they have let bygones be bygones.

I thought he said

Z tapped Barrett’s shin guard with the bat when Z was up to bat. I could be wrong though.

Don't get me wrong

I like Theriot… but when was this last time he hit a FLY ball somewhere? “Singles on a ground ball” is becoming very tiring.

he

just hit a line drive to right field…..and why should he hit fly balls, theyd just be outs because he’s not going to hit home runs.

I'll take it.

He’s got the speed and not the power, if he wants to play he needs to hit them on the ground.
