Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Tonight's AAA Iowa vs Nashville game

First off--I'm NOT trying to steal Josh 77's thunder.

I ended up sitting with an MLB scout with 25 years of tenure. Interesting guy to say  the least. Sitting behind me were Cub prospect Justin Berg (timing and charting) and a scout from the Mariners.

Cub lefty starter Randy Keisler: That had to be one of the better Houdini acts I've seen. He seemed to have a lot of high pitch counts and a ton of frozen rope outs hit all over the park. But when he really needed to get an out, he generally got it. Topped out at 87 on the gun and i noticed some lack of composure antics early in the game when calls didn't go his way..and there really was a floating zone. Don't hold your breath expecting him to be a huge contributor.

Felix Pie: the scout told me he'd swung at the first pitch in 8 of his first 11 ab's in this series. Nashville starter Richie Gardner topped out at about 88 and had what the scout called a baby slider--not really MLB caliber. But, Felix bounced 3 pitches off the top of the first base dugout in the same AB and had 1-2 other balls pulled foul. He was incapable of adjusting to inferior breaking balls and hit them fair. Later, Nashville brought in lefty reliever Ramirez who sidewinds and only gets up to about 85. I figured Felix was mince meat--but the scout busted out laughing when Felix guessed fastball, got it and got a single to left center. Ramirez had NO business throwing a fastball.

Eric Patterson still looks maddeningly inconsistent and also has a penchant for making first pitch outs.

Josh Kroeger: he has good patience at the plate and gives reason for hope. It's always nice to see a big guy with power AND patience.

Andres Blanco the Cub SS was VERY impressive. Exceptional defender who made one highlight reel play and some other solid ones. He also came to bat with the bags drunk and 2 out; base hit, 2 RBI and a tie game. His team mate told me his "D" is solid every night and he's working hard on his offense.

Murton hasn't changed one iota--every ab, every pitch--solid and fair defender in left.

McGehee, Ascanio and Dubois were singularly unimpressive.

It was fascinating to see all the notations and the amount of info the scout could observe on every pitch. Stopwatch in one hand, gun in the other and a variety of score books and notepad in his lap. He said first pitch swinging was common for Latin players because hitting is what will get them into the US....made sense. He also had a World Series ring on, which was cool.

Felix Pie = Triple A ballplayer

You sat next to a smart scout. Felix Pie ain’t never goin’ to hit major league pitching on a consistent basis. It doesn’t much matter that he can hit inferior Triple A pitchers.

Get Rich Harden !! 6 starts, 3-0, 35 IP, 41 Ks, 2.60 ERA

is not allowed to date until she’s 25, so that’s not going to be a problem. :-)

I love my girl, but she’s cutting into my baseball attendance. This may be the first year in six or seven that I won’t see the Cubs in person. And it’s all because of her.

That's a shame.

I’ve had Tessa at two ballgames now, and the first time she wasn’t too thrilled (she mostly napped) but she loved it the second time. She’s mostly fond of the food.

with my baby not eating solid food yet, she’s not going to enjoy peanuts and cracker jacks.

Next year should be fine, but a just think having a four month old in the crowd like that is a little tough.

I have to tell you...

... I see people in the bleachers with babies all the time, and yes, some as young as that. As long as it’s not too hot or too cold, you can wrap them up and they’ll mostly sleep.

It’s impossible when they’re toddlers and won’t sit still.

Yeah, Tessa's first ballgame, she was two months.

Sitting up in the bandstand in the shade, it’s not bad at all – we had her swaddled and passed her around as she slept. A-Ram hit a walkoff home run and she wasn’t thrilled with the screaming that woke her up.

This weekend, she was fourteen months, and she was quite a bit to handle – I wouldn’t want to do it by myself, certainly, but we went with extended family, and so some people took her on walks. My mom got her a soft-serve ice cream – the bowl is shaped like a batting helmet – and she just lounged in someone’s lap and spooned herself ice cream for a few innings. It was adorable.

Well, we'll see

Maddie has trouble sitting through church, let alone a ballgame.

It’s not just the game, but the drive to San Francisco too. (Well, to Vallejo and then the ferry to San Francisco.) If it were nearby, I’d just go by myself, like I did with the River Cats.

But I always say just because other people do things with their baby doesn’t mean that we’re going to. I go to the doctors office and I see six month olds with pierced ears, too.

Of course.

Pierced ears on 6-month-olds? Crazy.

But I bet she’d like the drive and ferry ride. Those sorts of things seem to calm babies (trust me, I have experience with this!).

Pie...

I honestly believe that since there had been so much ink about wanting lefty power at CF that he may be trying to go for the downs too often…he’s hitting about .170—but I believe has 3 HR’s. Since breaking stuff eats him alive, it seems like he’s hoping to hit first ball fast ball.

The good news is that he’s fouling off a ton of breaking pitches, but I don’t think he’ll be a force at the next level unitl he can lay off of more of them. He did work the count on a couple AB’s and didn’t appear to be over swinging.

He seems to be a very high strung guy emotionally.

i think having seen pie several times

when he realizes he’s not a power hitter, shortens his swing, and keeps his head in the box that he will start having some consistent success.

It's been a tale of two Pies in the minors...

he started off 3-40 in his first 10 games since being sent down. Since then, he’s gone 10-33 with 3 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, and 2 BB in the last 8 games. It seems like he’s been smoking the ball lately, and to left field quite a bit based on the box scores over the past week plus.

It’s hard to say what the reason for the wide discrepancy, other than that confidence may be a big issue with him. This would tie in closely with the suggestion that he’s a high-strung guy emotionally.

by SouthernCub on Jun 3, 2008 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, he's also supposed to be wokring on

a new swing, so installing some new techniques might explain his early struggles.

Greer Stadium

Has the guitar scoreboard been fixed yet? I was there last May to see the Redbirds play the Sounds. Less than half those bulbs were working then. When is Nashville going to get the funding together to build that proposed downtown stadium? There are beautiful downtown stadiums in Memphis and Chattanooga. Nashville needs to follow suit.

Politics!

The owner of the Sounds franchise is a schmuck named Al Gordon who has an office in Hinsdale, Il near Ogden and York if you know that area. He is not beloved by any of us locals or by city government. We were THAT close to a new riverfront stadium and it fell apart with the developer and Sounds mgmt pointing fingers. Judging by the reaction of Nashville’s mayor and that of another local mayor—they balme Gordon and don’t trust him at all.

I had season tickets for a couple years and feel their pain. The scoreboard works now, for the most part-it’s so old that finding drivers etc to keep it afloat are difficult. Nashville’s sport funding allocation is tied up with 2 other pro franchises-the Titans and Predators-this a problem Memphis and Chattanooga don’t have. I’ll never forget the Tom Hanks line-the first thing he says to Helen Hunt in Castaway after being found” so let me get this straight—we have an NFL team now but it’s in Nashville?”

I do pull for the Grizzlies by the way!

I've heard rumors

of the Nashville franchise moving for years. I don’t think there’s another city right now willing to build a state-of-the-art AAA stadium right now—the Sounds missed out on Reno and I can’t think of any other city finagling for a new franchise. So they may stay in Nashville for a while.

Dude---the scout said this:

He swung at 8 of 11 first pitches and he has a very tough time with breaking stuff. He did NOT say that he’ll NEVER be an MLB player. He said Von Joshua was highly respected in MLB as a hitting coach, which is good news for our farm system.

The Edmonds/Pie war has two very stubborn factions opposing one another and somewhere in the middle is reality. Edmonds has not yet reverted to form from 3 years ago; maybe he will, maybe he won’t. I certainly hope he does because I want us to win. I was the first person with a fan post about whether he was done or not the next day after SD released him. 90% said he was done—things look different as of this morning.

People have a tendency to fall in love with prospects-especially in Cub-dom-but really all over baseball. This same scout told me Jay Bruce struck out NINE times in a recent series before being recalled and that people were going bananas prematurely…..but while we were speaking last night, Bruce hit another one out.

It’s funny how the seasoned baseball guys will lean toward veterans when the money is on the table and the criticism they take for it is relentless. I firmly believe Felix is not ready and that he was given enough of a chance to prove otherwise. But to say he’ll never make it is flat out ridiculous.
