Open Thread: Cubs vs. White Sox, Friday 6/20, 1:20 CT
Chicago White Sox @ Chicago Cubs
Summer is here -- temperatures finally will reach the mid-80's today, and the Cubs are facing the White Sox, and the next week will be filled with crosstown hype, as the two clubs face each other six of their next nine games. The series has even gotten national hype -- two consecutive appearances on ESPN's Sunday night game, and for the game at the Cell next Saturday the 28th, Fox-TV let its affiliates choose Cubs/Sox or Mets/Yankees. 60% of them chose Cubs/Sox.
After eleven years of interleague play, this series, always hard-fought no matter where each club is in the standings, is tied at thirty wins each -- and the Cubs had to win five of six last year to accomplish that tie. It's even between ballparks, too -- each team is 16-14 at home.
For some national analysis and fun see this Jeff Passan column at Yahoo.
Enough hype. On to the numbers:
| Today's Starting Pitchers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ted Lilly threw the first game of the Cub/Sox series at Wrigley Field last year, throwing seven good innings in a 6-3 Cubs win. Paul Konerko has hit three HR off him, but Konerko's on the DL. Expect to see Toby Hall catching today, as Hall is .409/.480/.591 (9-for-22) against Lilly. Nick Swisher is 5-for-15, a double and 2 HR, in his AL days vs. Lilly.
John Danks has thrown well this year; he has never faced the Cubs. It'd be useful if Reed Johnson could play today, because then the Cubs could send an all-RH hitting lineup (except for Kosuke Fukudome) against Danks.
OK, listen carefully. All six Cub/Sox games will be nationally televised. Today's game is on WGN -- with the Sox announcers, so you can watch, but you'll have to turn the sound off. Len & Bob will be on CSN today. For more see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Today's overflow comment threads will post at 2:15 pm and 3:15 pm CT.
And, for the Sox fan point of view, check out the SBN Sox site, South Side Sox.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

To go to the game. Let’s end this losing streak and beat the White Sux!

Lets get on Danks early and ride Lilly for 8 innings. (There has to be a TWSS in there somewhere)

Jarts
Lawn darts (also called Jarts or yard darts) is a lawn game for two players or teams. A lawn dart set usually includes four large darts and two targets. The game play and objective are similar to both horseshoes and darts. The darts are similar to the ancient Roman plumbata.

Read last nights game thread
as I usually do to see some of your comments about the game. Sure was disappointed in the back and forth banter. I can understand being upset by the way we were losing but some of the comments were really uncalled for. Sure hope we have calmed down today and win or lose please maintain some semblance of common decency.

OT---
So i went for a run after work last night and I always run around the stadium on the way home. So who do I see (it appeared he just walked out of the stadium) standing at the back entrance to the bleachers with and usher and some random guy—-none other than the Human Air Siren himself. What the hell is he doing in the ballpark on an away game day? I swear, he must have a bed under the bleachers or something.
I hate that man, fortunately his mouth was shut.

I'm sure it's not just me but I am so sick
of hearing guillen and williams and sox players just rip the cubs for no apparent reason. Every single time things go poorly for them they rip the cubs and no one cares. I don’t know how many seperate articles i saw in the sun times today about someone from the sox slamming the cubs or wrigley but it was way too many. Worry about your own team.

Sox nation
Majority of their fans have an inferiority complex. Every single time the topic about the cubs comes up, they start yelling “Cubs Suck!” or “Completely Useless by September” and yes, “Bartman!” I know there are obnoxious and moronic Cubs fans, but the Sox fans are taking it to a whole new level.

In fairness...
I don’t imagine the facilities for the visiting team in Wrigley are… shall we say… the most up to date. Wrigley is certainly picturesque from a fan’s perspective, and it has lots of history, but the Sox aren’t the only ones who’ve made comments like this about Wrigley.

Forget them, they dont appreciate playing at Wrigley? Really? Well theyre the only ones. This is attention grabbing crap to make their fans like them more.

One thing that certainly needs to change
Especially in the first two games of the Tampa series is.
ERRORS
We looked like butchers in the field during the first two games of that series, and actually last nights game had that as well. ERRORS = Runs which = Losses… Who’d a thought right?

at it. Kenny and Ozzie are jealous and always will be. Sure they won a WS but they know that most people in Chicago know they won’t have an official WS until the Cubs win it. Mariotti was spot on in his column. The Cubs are a class organization and the Sux are not.

Getting tired of seeing his name on the lineup card. 11 for his last 55 with ONE RBI and ONE extra base hit (a double); 8 strikeouts in his last 16 at bats. He’s an automatic out at this point and it is a plus if he even hits the ball out of the infield. I think four of his 11 hits were swinging bunts

Is this rivalry bigger than
Yankees/Mets? I think so

actually, I think it's quite similar.
We’re the Yankees, they’re the Mets.

That's the last time
you ever compare us to the Yankees.
I'm thinking you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling, so why don't we just ignore each other til we go away.

Oh man
The Hawk needs to put down whatever he is smoking. I actually had a conversation with a Redsox fan in 2005 (when the Redsox were playing the Cubs) and he told me that in every Yank-Redsox match there would be trash talk, cursing, fights etc.

And there's not in Cubs/Sox games?
Although I believe it’s more civil. Every game I’ve been to/watched/heard about there’s always some type of hassling going on. But I think that’s expected….As you can see here

"Some" is the key
In any rivalry game you are going to have scuffles, but its far more rampant IMO with the Yanks and Sox. I think its a little more contained between the Cubs and Sox. And I chalk that up to midwestern tempermant.

How does one measure a Rivalry?
Intense fans (who fight each other) , ESPN acknowledgment and coverage. If so the Cubs/Sox have both.

I thought
We were speaking mainly in terms of intensity of fan negativity. Which is where I think the East Coasters have us beat. Which, I think is a good thing. Not to say it does not exist, but rather how much and how bad. I’ve encountered, as you have too I’m sure, many obnoxious Sox fans. But, I never get into shouting matches with them or worse a physical fight. I think there tends to be more of a mob action mentality on the east coast, IMHO.

I lived in Boston
for 4 years – trust me, the Boston-New York rivalry, pre 2004, was brutal. you wouldn’t take young children to any of those games.

I have to agree too
There is too much contending history between the Yanks and Sox, before interleague how much did the Cubs/WhiteSox really care about eachother. And I don’t mean in terms of regional differences, I’m talking from a baseball fans perspective.

If I had kids
I wouldn’t bring them to the Cell, for Cubs/Sox. It can get real nasty.

Does anyone know the Wrigley rules...
about makeup games? Would the Cubs be allowed to play a day-night DH on Saturday if today’s game is washed out?
I’d hate to play a day-night DH on Sunday with a flight to SF afterwards.

The Sox fans can talk all they want
Deep down inside they are stubborn to admit the Cubs are good and they really have blind hatred towards a team that isn’t even in their division.
