Good News On Zambrano
Apparently, he only has a minor shoulder strain. No problems with the labrum or rotator cuff. That's a major relief to us all. No word on next steps but today is a great day all around! He'll miss Tuesday's start and possibly the start after that, but hopefully he'll be back on the mound soon. Buster Olney on ESPN said that he believed that he might miss at least two starts and go on the DL...but he still has some more evaluation to go. But what's really important is it doesn't seem serious.

It's about time someone thought of trading for him

Just saw this on ESPN
Buster Olney says he’s probably going to miss 2 starts and go on the DL.
We have to get another pitcher now.
He says Cubs don’t have the prospects for CC. AJ Burnett is another possibility.
I mentioned this yesterday
How about Erik Bedard? seattle is supposedly shopping him and not expecting to get what they gave up for him in return.

Bedard
will cost more than CC because he’s not a free agent at the end of the year. Just like Bedard cost more than Johan Santana this off-season.

I’d pay more for Bedard for that reason.

I just want to let you know
that I can never read your posts because you never use a subject line.
So big pages load well and so that I can ignore people I don’t want to read, I have the display “collapsed” as default and only open the ones I want to read. But you open them by clicking on the subject line. Because you don’t use one, I can’t read your posts.
Just a heads up. I’m not ignoring you intentionally. What you’ve written might be great.

Sabathia's price may be kept down...
...by the fact that he’s not granting a negotiating window to teams for a contract extension. You’re trading for a rental.
The Indians still want a king’s ransom, though.
I heard today...
... that the Indians are probably going to deal him, if they do, later rather than sooner to drive his price up.
So if CC is dealt, look for it to be right at the deadline.

Yeah, but if you're not going to get a negotiating window...
...the longer the rental, the more you’re willing to give up. So I’ve heard rumors that they might do this as fast as possible to maximize their return.
Drinking from the firehose – two people can say two different things, and sometimes they can both be right!
he said hes not sure
if they have the prospects but Gms are saying the cubs are gonna go for everything in 08 and be very agressive in the trade market
I think Hendry sees the golden ring at the end of the rainbow and knows the window can close very quickly.
I think Jim wants a world series ring as much as any player on the team. This man lives and breathes his job.
If we win it all I would like him to take the trophy first unless it’s Santo (I heard that MacPhail was going to tell Selig to give it to Santo in 03 instead of him first)
But as far as I know Crane Kenney accepts the trophy.

No way.
It’d be Hendry and Piniella. Crane Kenney’s smart enough to give credit where it’s due.

Team owner
Usually it’s the owner or team president who accepts it but because of the sale and such this is a different situation than normal.
They mentioned Hendry has been the Gm for 6 years the other day. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long.

I think the Cubs may have what it takes to get CC but I’m not sure if Gallagher is worth it.

Don't overreact...
We needed another starter before Z got hurt. Even if he misses four starts it is not critical, so long as the rest of the team plays up to it’s capacity.

My Opinion,
the DL makes sense for the only reason that we can call someone up to fill the position.
"Go Cubs Go"
The Cubs are fine with Marshall taking those two starts
There’s no need to make a deal immediately.
Fontenot (fon-te-no): Cajun for "scrappy"
Agreed. If Marshall can pitch like he did yesterday, we’ll even come out ahead on the deal. And Z will be ready to dominate.

I have a question for the assembled crowd.
To land Sabathia or the ilk Hendry is going to have to pay big time.
Of the Gallagher, Hill, Pie group who would you consider absolutely the most untouchable?
Go Cubs
I think the obvious answer is you'd want to hold on to Gallagher
but at the same time, he would make by far the most attractive trade bait. If they can land a truly great SP for a deal centering around him, I would be totally fine with it. If you’re talking Sabathia in particular, then I’d give up any of those guys (anyone in the system, actually) happily.
Good news for Soriano
His finger is healing quick and he wants to make batting practice on Monday, but Lou won’t let him (unless he uses wiffle balls).

The Cubs have a very bad record recently of accurately diagnosing...
...injuries to their star pitchers, so i wouldn’t start to relax just yet. I’d still say “wait and see”...
gallagher
cubs need to get this kid some runs early.he,s been pitching a lot better. early on it seems like every team would figure him out by the 4th inning.i would,nt trade the farm for cc to use as a rental.let,s get our guys to step up.
The bottom line
Here is the bottom line folks. It doesn’t matter if Z is out for 1 start or 4 starts. We need to WIN IT ALL! In order to do this (and make me sleep better until Oct.), we need to set oursleves up for the strongest playoff rotation as possible. Therfore, we need to acquire 1 more # 1 or 2 pitcher. That is all we need. If we have to give people up, I say:
Murton
Cedeno
Marshall
Hill
Your thoughts? They have to win it this year! This is our chance!!!! PLease… before I die!
So, we should give up any of the players that nobody around here really wants...
...in exchange for a 1 or 2 starter. Brilliant!
If you want a one or two starter, you’re going to have to start giving up something of real value. Maybe that’s Felix Pie – although who knows what his trade value is. Maybe that’s Sean Gallagher. Maybe Jose Ceda or Wellington Castillo.
By no means should the Cubs trade Rich Hill right now; Hill’s value could not be any lower at this point, and so what on earth would you be able to trade him for? Cedeno and Murton are probably pieces other teams would want – San Diego I know still covets Murton, just not at Hendry’s current asking price of a top pitching prospect – but probably not as the centerpiece of a deal for a Sabathia/Harden/Bedard type.
Before BlueMike comes along and regurgitates his "Nobody wants Murton" spiel...
...go ahead and read this article, where Padres GM Kevin Towers openly admits to interest in trading for Murton. It’s a lie; there are major league teams that want Matt Murton. He could even be dealt for pitching help – Randy Wolf of the Padres is one of the second tier of pitchers who could be available at the trade deadline.
Murton has little value
But if you want to think to the contrary then go right ahead. Murton may be a throw in to a deal. But a cornerstone piece? Hell no. San Diego has called up top prospect Chase Headley and may give him a shot in left field.
GET Rich Harden !! 9 starts, 4-0, 53 IP, 67 Ks, 2.53 ERA
Don't pull a muscle backpedaling.
You’ve gone on record many, many, many, many times (as is your wont) saying that NO team is IN ANY WAY interested in Matt Murton. Now when someone shows you documented evidence that you’re wrong, you concede that he “may be a throw in.” Give me a freakin’ break. And you wonder why no one takes you seriously.
Nanika Ga Okoru!
Okay then.
Look boys and girls, Matt Murton has been very available since last winter. And not one single major league ballclub has pursued his services. Nary a one.
The fact is that the general manager of “one single major league ballclub” said that he was interested in Matt Murton. You have a major credibility problem, because you don’t seem to have a strong command of the facts and yet have a tendency towards absolute certainty in your pronouncements. And if you want to be a laughingstock, that’s fine. But I really value the ability to have intelligent baseball discussion without you coming by to “correct” me in matters that you’re absolutely ignorant of.
I pretty much agree with everything you're saying
The Cubs have a tendency to hold on to guys until their value diminishes. I hate the idea of trading a guy like Gallagher-esp. since he seems to be making real strides but we’re going to have to give up something if we want to bring in a stud starter.

From Joe Sheehan's chat yesterday:
theguag (Louisville): What are the trade values for Rich Hill and Felix Pie and should/would the Cubs move them?
Joe Sheehan: Their trade values have been crushed by the organization. They shouldn’t trade them, they should play them.
For Pie, I would agree.
For Hill, I think that ship has sailed.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
You mean?
You mean that Pie should play but that Hill won’t? I could definitely be wrong, but I tend to think that Pie’s now blocked by Edmonds and that Hill is the only one who could “earn” his way back to a promotion. I wish I knew what was up with Hill, but since I don’t, I don’t have much to say on his situation and won’t agree that we know the Cubs have “crushed” his value.
Zambrano
IF we had lost Z I still think we could have won the division but chances of going far in October would have been greatly diminished.
Going into the 7th inning losing 3-1 after a 3 game losing streak,. no news on Zambrano things looked pretty bleak.
Go Cubs
I know what you mean
This season has been an incredible rollercoaster and it’s not even the all-star break yet.

Just a note.
Bedard left his start today with back spasms; maybe he won’t be available for trade after all. That would jack up the price of the other options on the market.
Bedard isn't going to happen
I recognize that Bavasi is gone. But that being said there is no way Seattle is going to trade Bedard. Not unless they are able to save face and get something as good as Adam Jones, George Sherrill and the another top prospect they gave up to get him a few short months ago.
GET Rich Harden !! 9 starts, 4-0, 53 IP, 67 Ks, 2.53 ERA
You care to cite a source on this?
Because you’re what I like to call wrong. From Jayson Stark:
Bill Bavasi got booted in Seattle as much for what he wouldn’t do (fire his manager, trade his Opening Day starter) as for anything he did do. So the biggest initial impact of his firing is that it means Erik Bedard is now officially on the market. The first order of business for interim GM Lee Pelekoudas, according to one rival exec, was to “call around, and give instructions to all his scouts, to quietly get the word out that they’re open for business.”
A big sigh of relief
Zambrano will no doubt head to the DL and come back under careful plan. Thank goodness there is no structural damage.
The time is NOW for Jim Hendry to engineer a deal to land Rich Harden or A.J. Burnett. Lets not wait until the July 31st deadline when the pricetag for these guys will be even higher and the Cardinals and Brewers could very well be right on our rear bumper.
GET Rich Harden !! 9 starts, 4-0, 53 IP, 67 Ks, 2.53 ERA
you havent answered anyone on this thread yet
but tell me why you would want an overpriced baby/injury risk and suckfest of a pitcher AJ Burnett? He has been nothing but hype is whole career. Great stuff with the inabilty to get it right. An AJ Burnett trade shouldnt happen because he has been terrible this year….I dont want him and I hope the Cubs dont either.
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
Just saw a report that Bedard
left the game tonight with back spasms-I think that’s the second time he’s broken down this year. That might have something to do with Seattle shopping him. It might be a good idea for Hendry to cross him off the list.
Thank you God!!!!
For the good news on Soriano And Zambrano! Will sleep better tonight! :)
