Why ESPN Baseball SUCKS!!!
Why is it that every time the Cubs play on ESPN they have to remind us of the fact that it has been 100 years with someones story or a simple comment atleast once an inning?? Or the fact that they must always bring up 2003 NLCS and Bartman?? I mean if they dont know anything else about the cubs or baseball why cover it?? I just get tired of hearing the same thing over and over like a broken record player. And the same goes for FOX coverage as well, they tend to do the same but usually its more about the 100 years than Bartman.
Regardless, LETS GO CUBBIES!!!!!!!!!

I don't think that would make it stop
They would still find a way to get 100 years in there somewhere (“After going 100 years between World Series titles, the Cubs finally ended the drought last season.”)
I know ESPN has been discussed a lot on here, but I am REALLY getting tired of their constant Red Sox bias. Last night on Sportscenter, they mentioned the top two teams in the ESPN power rankings were the Red Sox and Rays. Never mind that the Cubs have the best record in baseball. I had hopes that TBS would not be like ESPN, but they’ve shown the Red Sox two consecutive Sundays.

it's a ratings thing
you can argue the ‘who’s more loyal’ question to death between Sox and Cubs fan, but that inarguable fact is that Sox games get better ratings ‘cuz Sox fans watch every single televised game from the start of the pre-game fluff to the post-game fawning over how great the Sox are. us Cubs fans actually have lives, which translates to lower ratings. plus Sox v. Cardinals and the upcoming Sox v. D-backs are matchups between possible play-off teams. I’m also quite sick of watching the Red Sox on TV, but this is sorta’ the way capitalism works.
I understand that's why Red Sox games are always on
But SportsCenter and Baseball Tonight do not have to be dominated by the Red Sox. Sports fans and baseball fans are going to watch those programs whether the Red Sox get more attention or not. As a “credible” (and believe me, I used that word very loosely) national news organization, they should do a better job of not going overboard on the Red Sox. One example from the other night: during Mets-Rockies highlights, they point out that “former Red Sox great Trot Nixon” had hit is first home run for the Mets. Why is that necessary? He didn’t play for the Red Sox LAST season even. And it’s a real stretch to call him a “Red Sox great.” He was a very good player, but I wouldn’t say great. And the Curt Schilling coverage from a couple of days ago, of course, went overboard. Cito Gaston is brought back to the Blue Jays, and they can’t get to that or any other news, because the first 20 minutes of SportsCenter are turned over to whether Schilling is a Hall of Famer (he’s not).

They are programming to
the ‘casual’ baseball fan, who might only watch a few games per season. ‘Baseball for Dummies,’ you might say.’ If I had time earlier today, I would have asked for the over/under for the first ‘1908’ mention.
I caught one @ 70 mins into the broadcast.
And, tonight’s open - shame on that Cubs fan. He’s a loser. If he expects to lose, HE will lose. Always expect to win. It’s a positive mind-set. That guy who was profiled at the start of the telecast, deep down - likes losing. He revels in it. A better example would be Al—he accepts the past, but doesn’t let it hang over him. I try to follow the same type of mind-set.

DEROSA: How did it feel when you're sitting in Baton Rouge and it came across the ticker that Mark DeRosa had just signed to play second base with the Chicago Cubs.
THERIOT: In all honestly, when I saw it, I really felt like punching you right in the mouth and or breaking your leg.
OMG that has to be the stupidest thing he's ever said

That's a pretty strong statement.
The list of stupid things Joe Morgan has said could fill an entire 5-story library.

errr hate to not bash Joe Morgan
but he said that Derosa HAD found a place on this team as a 2nd baseman. He didn’t have a position at ATL
Just got back from the game
My cousin told me he actually repeated that the basket was the reason for Banks homeruns being so high. Even though he has been repeatedly told the basket was installed in 1970 and Ernie hit all but 14 of his homers before that.

What a jerk Morgan is.
He’s hated the Cubs for decades, and keeps putting this misinformation on the air. You’d think someone in management at ESPN would stop this, but apparently it’s one of two things. Either:
a) they don’t know either, or
b) they know, but they don’t care.
Either way, it’s reprehensible.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
It is annoying
but unavoidable and too juicy for them to pass up. And you forgot about the Barrett vs Annoying Jerk fight. Of course they had to bring it up and show the footage. Atleast they showed the footage. Those blue eyes…...
Geovany Soto you're my Hero
Yeah, but...
they had a camera literally inches from his as he trotted down the third baseline and crossed the plate…
to be fair, it's not ESPN, but John Morgan and John Miller
the last few times the Cubs have been on ESPN they had Rick Sutcliff doing ‘color’, and he’s as much a shameless Cubs fan as we are.
oh, and let’s not forget that without them, no Erin Andrews in the stands.
Agreed
It’s the whole Monday Night Football thing on Sunday Night Baseball. Two caricatures in the booth that don’t do enough homework to provide legitimate or accurate insight on the two teams playing so they are left with the “mainstream” beliefs and views that are usually both outdated and nonsensical.
On the other hand, the weekday games on ESPN are fine….just like the regional NFL games that actually feature broadcasters that have, usually, spent an entire week cramming for the Sunday matinee.
Personally, I just ignore the fools. I’ve forgotten more baseball than those rubes will ever disclose on their national broadcast which is just fine with me.

Miller and Morgan
Are brutal. Miller thinks hes hilarious and original. Morgan has this hate on the Cubs because of Ryne Sandberg. What a jackass, get the stick out your butt and announce the game without an obvious bias. And please ESPN, change your scripts for these guys, it is getting really old. Chip Carry should take over the ESPN both

Can someone confirm to me if Morgan actually said the basket was put in to help Ernie get more homeruns?

Joe Morgan said something like:
the basket was put there to stop fans from reaching over. Ernie Banks hit many homeruns into that basket. Named part of the baskets in ernie’s name since ernie hit so many HRs in there….
"So many".
We all know the basket was installed in late April 1970, I believe after the homestand that ended on April 26.
I went through Ernie’s game logs. After that date, he hit 8 home runs at Wrigley Field. EIGHT. I personally witnessed one of them - #499 hit on May 9, 1970. That one didn’t go in the basket. Video exists of his 500th - that one didn’t go in the basket.
That leaves six others.
I’m going to mention this again in my recap so it makes the front page. Maybe the guys at Fire Joe Morgan will pick up on it.
Joe Morgan may be the worst baseball broadcaster in the history of television.

Al good info.
I think by the way the baseball spirits are keeping us from meeting. I wound up in the bleachers last night after all but every time I started to hop over to say hello I ran into someone I knew or something happened in the game to distract me.

He called it
Banks Boulevard. I’d never heard the term before.
What pisses me off is the constant repetition of “factoids.” It’s as if they expect viewers to be channel switching so if they repeat something ten times, somebody might catch it.
They're broadcasting to a national audience
Hard to believe but there’s almost 300 million in this country living OUTSIDE the Chicago metro area.
Who gives a RATS ASS if the Eastern Seaboard Programming Network or any of these other “national” sports networks harps about the 100 years thing?
Let them yap about things like that, Ozzie and his rats comment and any other crap. The Cubs are doing well. Now it’s time to expand on that 20 games over .500 mark.
Wanna rip? Rip on Morgan continuing to talk about that damned basket where he continues to believe Mr. Cub hit so many HR’s there…
Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.
Other things...
Did anyone catch Morgan saying that the Pierzynski/Barrett play would have had the crowd standing and applauding if it was at home. If I recall, it WAS at US Cellular as Joe could’ve seen by the replay where AJ was wearing the home whites and Barrett the road grays.
Second, when they had their graphic to display the Cubs and Sox “history” they showed a shot of the stadium (Wrigley and Cell respectively) when each team was founded (1876 and 1901 respectively) and a photo. That photo for the Sox was Ozzie holding the WS Trophy during their parade. For the Cubs? A shot of AZ fans holding up 1908 in large balloons. What the frak? We ALL know it’s been 100 years, give it a rest for 5 seconds and find a shot of Ramirez crossing the plate on Friday or any other of this years memorable shots.
Third, I thought the basket fence was installed to keep fans from jumping onto the field after Cubs wins in ‘69/’70?
Heard the same thing.
Almost choked.
Additionally, tried not to listen and had the radio up and going but the radio was roughly 3 seconds ahead of the TV. Tried that the first few batters, but was forced to turn up the audio on Joe f’n Morgan.
See my comments on the basket in my game recap on the front page.
Joe Morgan needs to be fired. The stuff he said about it is outright lies.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Never let facts
get in the way of a good story.
It’s excruciating listening to Morgan. It’s all about me, me, me.
Also, they’ve got to lose those silly suits. They look like Len and Bob on 1948 day.
Black Cat, Durham Error, Bartman Ball (On Loop)
It’s 2008 already. The above mentioned stuff has been replayed in our minds enough. We don’t need to see it on ESPN before their Cubs games. Yesterday’s history; tomorrow’s a mystery; today’s a gift; that’s why they call it the present. The present is pretty good for the Cubs.
"The big possum walks late." - Harry Caray
Suits?
Morgan can’t get a fact right - and you are complaining about their - clothing??
I’ve heard it all. You must have misssed the yellow blazers ABC Sports made their announcers wear in the 1970’s.
by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Jun 23, 2008 12:46 PM CDT reply actions
Or the rust-colored blazers...
... that WGN made their announcers wear. I was in San Francisco in 1981, to see the Cubs. Went to a play in the evening after the game and spotted Milo Hamilton there. He was still wearing his WGN blazer.

Why Joe Stays
Ever hear the phrase “cheaper to keep her”?
Joe is “safe” as a broadcaster. He doesn’t say anything controversial, he knows who butters his bread and thus falls in with the company line, and he shows up on time. He happens to know how to string three words together, which for an athlete is like being a Rhodes Scholar. Plus his minority status gives ESPN an image of being politically correct and in accordance with affirmative action.
Now, his arrogance and his habit of talking the game from the perspective of himself and the mid-70s is self-serving and tiresome…to say nothing of his laziness in checking his facts and his desire to inject a racial slant into the proceedings. His blatant disregard of Ryne Sandberg is totally unprofessional and petty. However, these things are not in violation of his employer’s conduct policies and cannot be construed as “detrimental behavior”. He’s like the co-worker of ours who is annoying but can’t be fired because he/she hasn’t done anything wrong.
So, while Joe doesn’t do anything wrong, that’s not to say he automatically “does right” when he calls games. And with Joe, ESPN knows exactly what it’s getting – as opposed to bringing in an unfamiliar outsider.
I wonder if Jim Leyland knows that he was fired this week?
Joe Blow or Miller was commenting on the three managers being fired this week and they said Seattle, New York, and Detroit. I wonder if Gibbons will report back in w/ Toronto.
Those guys are a joke, but I don’t mind Hershiser or Sutcliffe so much. I have real fond Cub memories of Rick so I probably cut him some slack.
That's true about Morgan.
However, there are a ton of other similar broadcasters who at least get facts straight and don’t harbor grudges against particular players or teams.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
I Can't Stand Him Either
Anytime he and Tim McCarver want to play canasta down in a Florida assisted-care facility is OK with me. I was just playing Devil’s Advocate and presenting the case from ESPN’s side of things.
Face it, as long as things are watered down for the sake of appealing to the LCD in order to make as much money as possible, we who have discerning tastes will suffer.
'Missed the ESPN coverage...damn!
I truly enjoyed the old-style radio transmissions as I was fly fishing in the wilds of the Smoky Mountains last weekend. No visual baseball for three days as I staulked the wild brookie but the spoken imagery was outstanding. Pat and Ron via XM radio …....”IT”S GOT A CHANCE! .....GONE!” Those two guys are priceless; such a wonderful aspect of the Cubs experience.
