Jim Hendry's contract
I have made no secret of the fact that I am a fan of Jim Hendry,
Yes he's made mistakes but his good has far outweighed his bad,
This is his 6th full season as GM, We are almost sure to have our 4th winning season and 3rd playoff appearance,
This is where it can get dicey.
His contract is up after this season, I think he's loyal to the Cubs and loves Chicago and has a beautiful home in Park Ridge and all that stuff but with the ownership situation in flux he has to think of his future.
So if you're Crane Kenney what do you do?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation, Bleed Cubbie Blue, or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief. FanPost opinions are, however, valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

How I voted
I voted to sign him now through 09.
Of course he might want a longer commitment than that,
I think he’s been our best GM in my lifetime or second to Dallas Green,

I would vote for Hendry if he ran for President
He got Maddux back in 04 and he did it through the most delicate of negation
I fully understand that the trades for A-Ram & Lee , signing Dome, etc were bigger deals
but none required as much TLC.
Should Jimbo decide to enter politics he has my vote regardless of which party he
chooses.

So would I! I trust Hendry more than the two that are running....
Also, don’t you remember back in the ‘06 winter meetings when he had to go to the hospital because of chest pains and he still was able to sign Ted Lilly? In all seriousness he is one of the best GM’s in baseball and having being around him a few times he is a guy that absolutely hates to lose. His hands were really tied during the McFail bean counting years but, even then he was able to pull of some blockbuster deals

McDonough bailed
in favor of more money and security.
Hendry has done a great job as GM. Not all trades have been successful (pitching for Pierre) but he’s made some steals. More important, he’s set a tone for the franchise that makes people want to play for the Cubs and stay with them. Zambrano, DLee, and Aramis could have made more money in free agency, but elected to stay. He seems to treat people right, and that counts for a lot.
New ownership has the right to make decisions, but retaining Hendry is a no brainer.
by Clark Addison on Jun 23, 2008 7:38 PM CDT 0 recs
I'd agree with this.
Assuming the Cubs do make the playoffs and go farther than they did in 2007, what owner would dump a GM (and staff) who just accomplished that?
Hendry has done a terrific job so far this year. He has more work to be done. I have confidence that he’ll do it.

gee - you think?
It’d be pretty hard for Cuban to get where he is today withOUT having a big ego. That still doesn’t provide any substance to your statement that “he would fire Hendry to get his own guys”
Cuban owns the Mavericks, an NBA team. So he’s probably well-versed in who’s who in NBA management circles. But I kinda doubt he’s got a MLB GM-type executive in his back pocket, just itching to run a team. And there’s no way he’d bring in a non-baseball executive.
So the only reason to fire Hendry would be if Cuban knew of someone better. Since he doesn’t have any baseball people in his direct employ, he’d have to peruse the open market – and of all the unemployed baseball execs out there, who is better than Hendry?

Coming out of the black hole
that were the MacFAIL/Lynch years, Hendry has looked like nothing short of a godsend. Of course not every move has been golden but just the fact that he stole guys like Ramirez and Lee assures that he’ll be mentioned among the best GM’s in Cubs history.
I would love to see him continue indefinitely but, sad to say, since most new ownership groups want to bring in their own people, I think his future with the Cubs is going to be tied directly to how things shake out the rest of this season.

I just wish he'd go for the jugular a bit more
Hendry generally hits when he needs to. He stole D. Lee and A Ram for nothing. Has established a legit farm system, which produces sufficiently well - starters at SS, C, and 2 SP and 3 RP. Soriano was a critical get - resetting the tone for the club. Lilly’s been worth it; probably even Marquis. Etc.
Nonetheless, I feel he is too enamored with his “diamonds in the rough” when he could instead get studs. Lieber vs. Haren this year, J. Jones vs. whomever, not getting Tejada four years ago, etc.
Don’t get me wrong, he will step up as he did two years ago, but this seems to be more when he has to, rather than as a natural course of action. I like Hendry a lot, but feel he cheaps-out a bit more than I’d like.

In the past the Cubs pretty much did everything by commitee
But after MacFail and the pending ownership change, a lot of that responsibility was placed squarely on him. I think the Cubs organization is learning a lot from watching what happens when you leave the baseball decision making to the baseball people (i.e. Jim Hendry and Crane Kenney)

My Take on JH
By himself, I don’t think Jim is supremely astute – at least not at the level of GMs who on their own can transform an entire organization. As it is, that kind of uber-GM is pretty rare. He’s more like you and I on the job, where we need to have competent people around us all pulling in the same direction to do the best work we can.
Once Andy MacPhail and Dusty Baker hit the road and McDonough/Kenney and Lou came aboard, things really clicked. Hendry has the full financial backing of the higher-ups who actually seem to have some Cub fan in them to boot. And Lou seems to have convinced him of the merits of OBP as “not making outs so frequently” instead of “walks clog the bases”.
Jim is a hard-worker, extremely diligent, and comes across a people person who is respectful and cordial to the media and fans. Another way he’s like us is that he won’t rest until there’s a championship banner flying over the Friendly Confines.
I think he’ll make some acquisitions for the second half – hopefully a pitcher or two, and hopefully without undercutting the whole farm system or upsetting the balance of the current roster. Who he’s brought in so far this year and last (Soriano, Lilly, Edmonds, DeRosa) have really improved the lineup, and it’s nice to see some of the farm products having a hand in the success as well (Soto, Theriot, Marmol, Gallagher).
We’ll see if JH stays once the new owners arrive. If they give him the support and assistance he needs then it wouldn’t be a bad thing at all!
by CaliCub on Jun 24, 2008 9:46 AM CDT 0 recs
Beyond his respect for media and fans...
... he’s always been good to the players he signs; if it doesn’t work out (a la Maddux) he’ll make a deal for the player, and if players get blocked (Scott Moore a good example) he will try to get him a better situation.
That’s why a lot of players want to come to the Cubs, because they know they have a GM who will do right by them.

True True
And, as they say, he’s always kept guys he really wants around before they go to market (Zambrano, ARam, Lee).
Do you all think there’s truth to the rep Hendry has of locking into acquiring a particular guy, at the risk of either 1) overlooking better options or 2) the guy going elsewhere and leaving Jim to make a panic deal? An example of #1 would be Juan Pierre instead of Kenny Lofton, and an example of #2 would be hastily signing Jason Marquis when Gil Meche opted for KC. It seems there’s a kernel of truth to this, but as long as he’s willing to cut his losses sooner than not then this tendency isn’t a total detriment.

The Pierre deal...
... wasn’t instead of Lofton, it was because he didn’t get Furcal and was so focused on getting that “speedy leadoff guy” that Baker wanted.
Frankly, Hendry has made far better deals since Baker was let go.
Gil Meche is a decent pitcher but would have cost more than twice what Marquis did.

Hendry and Baker vs Hendry and Pinella
I think Hendry and Baker weren’t on the same page after 03, I was watching my video of their seminar at the 03 convention and then the 04 convention and 05 convention. The body language was definitely different.
I think Hendry and Pinella are on the same page and probably have a lot of the same ideas as to how to build a winning ballclub.
Also from what I understand not only does he treat players, fans and media with respect he treats agents and other executives with respect and he is very popular with them as well.

Meche signed for 55 Million over 5 years
You can’t seriously believe Hendry should have matched that offer.
As I understand it he offered BOTH Lilly and Meche 4/40
Lilly took the deal once it was clear the Yankees were not interested in him
I don’t think Meche is nearly as good as Lilly and I can imagine everyone freaking out

People who criticize Hendry should think about Ned Colletti, who has made perhaps the three worst free-agent signings ever, in the last two years: Juan Pierre, Andruw Jones, and Schmidt. That’s nearly $150 million of worthless players.

Here's What's Funny
There are probably some fans that are glad Coletti signed all those guys because “he showed he cared” or “he went after the best names out there like all good GMs should”. I think that’s what a certain Sun-Times columnist whose name ends in “otti” would have liked for the Cubs to do – just sign every big name FA every offseason so the Cubs can be like the Mets and worry only about placating the fan base.

He lucked into one of the best minor league systems in baseball that now is in steady decline under his leadership. And he has wasted countless millions on horrendous free agent signings…Juan Pierre, Andruw Jones, Jason Schmidt, Randy Wolf (a one year deal for a rehab year), Nomar Garciaparra.

Meche had a good year last year
but with our without run support he was not winning 20 games and his ERA of
3.63 and 1.30 whip is not the stuff of 5 year 55 million dollar contracts ESPECIALLY
if you want to nurture your own farm talent up to the majors because that is not
a contract you can trade. Marquis contract is a problem and he is uneven at best
Worth noting that Lou as redone the rotation to make sure he does NOT face the
Sox again as unlike some here he really did not think 5 earned runs in 7 innings was so hot and apparently has more trust in Gallagher. Marquis does eat innings and his contract is hardly up there with Zito, Schmidt and others. Meche’s contract
really ties him down.
