The NL All-Star Team

The following is my NL All-Star team (assuming all current front-runners in the voting hold up).

The Starters

C - Geovany Soto - CHC

1B - Lance Berkman - HOU

2B - Chase Utley - PHI

3B - Chipper Jones - ATL

SS - Miguel Tejada - HOU

OF - Alfonso Soriano - CHC, Kosuke Fukudome - CHC, Ken Griffey Jr - CIN

The Pitchers, in no particular order (I'm not sure how many pitchers there are so I guessed12):

- Tim Lincecum - SF

- Edinson Volquez - CIN

- Tim Hudson - ATL

- Johan Santana - NYM

- Carlos Zambrano - CHC

- Brandon Webb - ARZ

- Ben Sheets - MIL

- Ryan Dempster - CHC

- Cole Hamels - PHI

- Brad Lidge - PHI

- Billy Wagner - NYM

- Kerry Wood - CHC

The other 12 position players:

- 1B - Albert Pujols - STL

- 1B - Adrian Gonzalez - SD

- 2B - Dan Uggla - FLA

- 3B - Aramis Ramirez - CHC

- SS - Hanley Ramirez - FLA

- C - Brian McCann - ATL

- C - Russell Martin - LA

- OF - Ryan Braun - MIL

- OF - Carlos Lee - HOU

- OF - Nate McLouth - PIT

- OF - Matt Holliday - COL

- OF - Aaron Rowand - SF

Honorable Mention:

- 1B - Derek Lee - CHC

- SS - Rafael Furcal - LA

- OF - Xavier Nady - PIT

- OF - Jason Bay - PIT

- OF - Ryan Ludwick - STL

- OF - Pat Burrell - PHI

- OF - Adam Dunn - CIN

- 1B - Prince Fielder - MIL

- 1B - Ryan Howard - PHI

- 3B - David Wright - NYM

I didn't realize how stacked the NL was this year.  This analysis, being realistic, has seven Cubs on the all-star team, excluding Lee.  Let me know what you think, but this is my complete opinion, considering the fact that atleast one player from every team must be on the team.  Any questions, let me know, and I will explain myself.

With this, I must add a poll.  How many all-stars will the Cubs have?

Maybe it is just me but

I do not want any Cubs there…or could care less…I would rather our pitchers in particular get some extra rest….just keep them winning and focused on holding off the surging Brewers…Sheets looked good tonight…

But..

If the season goes the way we hope it does and the Cubs keep tearing it up at home, home field advantage could mean quite a bit in the WS. I understand its early and I understand not wanting any Cubs to get hurt by playing in the All-Star game, but this is the first year since the home field rule has been put into effect that I really think it will help the Cubs in October. I’d obviously rather the NL lose the game than the Cubs lose a player to injury during the game, but I hope IF NEEDED a Cub or two can get a few IP or AB’s to help put the NL over the top.

Can't agree.

If that’s the case, then let’s scrap the Mid-Summer Classic.

This game has already been so watered down with every hangnail and sniffle giving cause for one player or another to bail on attending.

And if the fans don’t want to support it, there’s really no point in continuing this great tradition.

Nady instead of McLouth for the Pirates?

Why?

Nady over McLouth because...

actually, I’m looking at the stats now, and I don’t know why I did that. I’ll edit it.

Just out of curiosity...

Have you watched many of these players this season personally?

by Damen Jackson on Jun 24, 2008 8:31 AM CDT reply actions

I watch Baseball Tonight often, as well as Sportscenter...

and If there is a game on, I usually watch it. My analysis is mostly based on stats, as well as fielding.

I think a fair argument can be made for Dempster to start the All-Star game.

The only two pitchers who I’d say have been definitively better (in terms of record, ERA, and strikeouts, the only three stats that seem to get noticed) are Volquez and Lincecum. And they might both be considered too green to start an All-Star game over a crafty vet’ran.

Demp won’t get the start, of course – my money would be on Webb – but I’m just saying.

Who knows?

By early July, if current trends keep up, Dempster might have a better W-L record AND ERA than Webb.

Raw Deal

I agree with most of the selections. Utley is having a killer year and Berkman is on one of his crazy hitting streaks. He has streaks like no one else, I think. The one that bothers me is the SS postition. Tejada is getting votes for who he is not his season. Not that he is having a bad one but just average. And again I’m not the Theriot is having a great season but I look at it as compared to his “career” numbers. As far as the rest of the SS he is having the best season so far. His still hitting near .300 and his OBP is in the .400’s. Yes he has made some errors but I think it’s more aggressive type than misplaying them.

Why Pujols is even in the top 5 in voting I don’t know. DLee isn’t having a super year for his standards, yet, but still better than Pujols. But, most of the voting is done by people who know names and don’t watch how players are actually playing.

What about Hanley Rameriz?

I agree that Tejada shouldn’t be leading as NL SS, but when you say “as far as the rest of the SS he is having the best season so far” you’re talking about Hanley Rameriz, right? I like what Theriot’s doing this year, but I can’t think of a single argument Ryan has over Rameriz-both can be termed “sparkplugs” for ther respective teams, neither has great glovework, their averages & on-base are basically a wash, but Rameriz is slugging 150pts better. Rameriz even gets the “feel good story” edge since the Cubs were predicted to compete for the NL Pennant from Day 1 but the Marlins were supposed to be a 100+ loss team after yet another firesale- not one game out of first in late-June.

Dont leave out Rollins and Reyes. NL SS's are stacked.

Pujols deserves it more than Lee, look at the numbers.

I try hard not to be biased.

What does Soriano do if he's voted?

He BETTER not play.

true

I think I read, heard, somthing, that he wants to be back in time to play so he can play. I dont think it will hurt but he better be 100% if he does play and if not Lou better lean on him a little so he sits out.

I dont think the Cubs would let him

They won't.

If he’s on the DL and elected, he gets to be on the team, but they can replace him with another player.

are you kidding me

pujols had been ridiculous up until the point he got hurt.I can’t defend Derreck against Pujols because Pujols has put up far better numbers this year and is walking at a Barry Bondesque rate. If he is healthy he deserves to be there.

had a spot over Wood, but he blew it.
