Longtime Cards Fan Switches Sides

This story ran in my local paper (springfield, IL) a few days ago. Didn't see that anyone had posted it on here yet so I thought I would. Is this an acceptable action? Should we see this as an insult as he is taking pity on us? Thoughts..

it will have been worth it.

Ehh

This seems like a plea for attention. I don’t know if this guy quite understands what it takes to be a Cub fan. Talk about jumping on a bandwagon- this is the perfect example of it.

Good point

Would he have switched sides if the Cubs were at the bottom of the standings?

Convenient timing.

Wonder if he has a Celtics jersey.

I'm thinking you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling, so why don't we just ignore each other til we go away.

eh

he can do what he wants, but does it really make a difference? He’s not becoming a cubs fan because he’s realized it’s the best team in baseball, and he’s planning on going back to the cards in November.

well I also too found this in no way worthy of front page coverage…but this rivalry is split almost 50/50 in the city of 100,000

True fans can't switch their allegiances that easily

I couldn’t stop living and dying with the Cubs even if I wanted to and I think most people on this site probably feel the same way.

He probably wasn’t much of a Cardinals fan or baseball fan in general to begin with. No way could I or any other Cub fans I know do something like this.

"Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball." - Jacque Barzun

by Bump Bailey on Jun 25, 2008 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well................

...............to tell a true story, I was born and raised a Cardinals fan in a town not too far away from the aforementioned Springfield. In fact, during my first two years at DePaul I remained loyal to the Redbirds.

But after sophomore year, I agreed to move off campus with some of my friends. I returned Downstate for the summer, and a few months later, they game me the address of our new home.

3643 N. Sheffield

Initially it didn’t mean much to me; not until I pulled up in my car with the U-Haul in tow.

That’s right – directly across the street from Wrigley Field. Not cool for a life-long Cards fan.

But after living there my junior and senior years of college, the location and the Cubs grew on me and I was converted. Now I’m a bleacher season ticket holder and trek down to most games in St. Loser to vociferously cheer on the Cubs.

So you can change sides, but you should have something better to hang your hat on than the BS touted in this article.

My friends give me a hard time because I said in no way shape or form would I ever date a cardinals or sox fan

then they came up with all of these scenarios like, “What if Jessica Alba was a sox fan?” There is just no way, I love this team too much! I could never just “switch sides” its impossible. A sex change would be more easily considered ;0)

Jessica Alba

could personally guarantee the Cubs never win the WS and I still wouldn’t say no to that.

I'm thinking you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling, so why don't we just ignore each other til we go away.

Eh. I think the following would be infinitely more interesting to get to know, and are more attractive to boot, than Ms. Alba.

Lara McAllen, Autumn Reeser, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Keira Knightley, Jenna Fischer, Marisa Miller (my homer pick), Rashida Jones, Kerry Washington, Danna Garcia, Katharine McPhee, Carrie Underwood, Natalie Portman. Well that was fun.

My story aside............

...........you might want to scrape a bit deeper than “favorite sports teams” when making a decision about a person to date.

Maybe it’s just me, but surely there are more important attributes, beauty of Alba or otherwise.

Wow, a story about a bandwagon fan

very interesting.

This is the equivalent to a Cubs fan changing allegiance to the Cards halfway through the ‘06 season. As Bump Bailey said above, he probably wasn’t much of a fan to begin with, and now that the Cubs are looking good, he buys a hat and calls himself a Cubs fan. Whoop-dee-doo

This is the dumbest

story I have ever heard and I hate stories like this because it makes everyone call people fait weather fans. I live in Tampa now and lived in New Jersey most of my life though my dad lives in chicago it is hard for people to understand i am truly a cubs fan and when people put stories out like this it makes them feel like they have the right to question Cubs fans, even the other day the Rays announcer said half the fans in the stadium didn’t know any thing about the cubs that they were just bandwagon fans it really bothers me

by oeosoto on Jun 25, 2008 2:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The Rays announcer said this?

The Rays announcer? Half the people attending Rays games are wearing hats they bought thirty minutes before the first pitch.

Reminds me how Dolphin Stadium just magically started filling up in 2003.

i know

when i heard it on the radio i was shocked he would say such a thing. They can’t get over 15,000 now the Cubs are gone even though they are the wild card leader by 3.5 games terrible

So let me see if I got this straight

He switched sides because of the 100-year anniversary? What kind of a dumb-ass reason is that? I would swear this was reprinted from the Onion except for the obvious fact that it isn’t funny. It’s just sad.

What a strange,

poorly written piece. This is a story? It would be a good piece for a college newspaper.

Bandwagon fans jump on any team that wins, or has a chance to win. This is—news?

Must be very boring in the State Capitol.

This schmoe never had to put up with Brock for Broglio, Carter for God knows who, Rob Deer, Gary Scott, Gary Varsho, Kevin Orie, Jerome Walton, Dwight Smith, Doug Dascenzo, Felix Heredia, Kyle Farnsworth, Calvin Schiraldi, Mitch Williams and the rest of the horrid lot we’ve had to put up with over the years. He doesn’t rate. Do. Not. Want.

Would that be Carter for Suttcliff?

I’d have made that deal. Carter was OK but without Suttciff we wouldn’t have gone to the playoffs in ‘84.

field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the
defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the
blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and
long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this
aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in
the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

I can't see it for real.

And if it is for real, I have to question his moral character.

I had an old business partner who was a Cubs fan. We went together to the very first Cubs/Rockies game ever here in Denver. He showed up in a Cubs jersey, with a Rockies hat! When I asked him what that was all about, he said that he’d been a Braves fan as a kid (he was originally from Wisconsin) and only started to root for the Cubs when the Braves moved from Milwaukee. He said that, since the Rockies were here, he was going to root for both teams. I went home that night and told my wife I was going to have problems with him. Sure enough, within two years, we had business differences, and we severed the partnership. The business differences involved him trying to take more of the partnership than he was entitled to.

You just can’t trust people who switch allegiances like that. My being a Cub fan isn’t a casual, or even seasonal decision. It is part of who I am. To switch to another team (and indeed, to switch to the Cardinals) is the essence of EVIL!

I realize that this guy switched to the Cubs. I think it’s all a sham. HE’S A SPY FROM CARDINAL NATION COME HERE TO STEAL THE NATURAL ESSENCES OF OUR BODILY FLUIDS!

See what happens when I forget to take my medications? ;-)
