Even if they lose today, so what?
The Cubs still have the best record in baseball, and they’ll still lead by at least 3.5 games.
The season is long. And frankly, they’re well overdue for a few more home losses. This shouldn’t be a surprise.

The point is that this team can come back...
It sucks that Marquis is trying too hard to be fine with his pitches, I know. He’s a head case, thank LaRussa for that. But if we can get one more inning out of him today, it will help.
Jimmyeatworld
by Jimmyeatworld on Jun 26, 2008 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions
He's not a head case.
There is nothing wrong with Jason Marquis mentally. He’s just a terrible pitcher. There’s no mystery to it, no character defect. He just doesn’t pitch well.
Marquis is a terrible pitcher.
What makes him a terrible pitcher is that he’s a head case. He doesn’t know what pitches to throw in what counts, and not even the catcher can get him to trust his stuff. He has no physical problems, his mechanics are sound. He just sucks, because he is a head case.
Jimmyeatworld
by Jimmyeatworld on Jun 26, 2008 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions
Sigh.
The problem is that he can’t locate his stuff and he can’t keep his sinker consistently down. I’d rather stab myself in the eye than watch him pitch, but that’s no reason to insult his mental makeup.
Actually
I’m sorry I used that term head case further up the read, because it’s obnoxious. But Marquis did, in fact, consult some sort of sports psychologist over the off season because of what he (and the team management?) perceived as non-physical issues.
''Listen, losing Soriano is no box of chocolates.'' ~Lou Piniella
Well of course they'll try just about anything...
...because they’ve got $21 million invested in a guy that doesn’t deserve to be a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball and they have to do SOMETHING. But that doesn’t mean that Marquis’ problems are anything but lack of talent.
They think it's not lack of talent
because he’s pitched well for parts of seasons and parts of games before. But it does seem like his occasional successes are more luck than talent.
''Listen, losing Soriano is no box of chocolates.'' ~Lou Piniella
Jason Marquis will put together a good stretch every so often...
...largely on the backs of his defense. He gives up way too many home runs, can’t strike batters out, and walks batters way too often. But every once in a while his defense will bail him out and someone will mistake that for something Jason Marquis did.
thank you! after Mar-kwees "gem" in Toronto
I suggested he had actually been hit hard, just right at the defense. The general response was “thats what he’s supposed to do”, which I agree with to an extent (pitch to contact w/ sinker), however it still doesn’t mean Marquis did anything good, or that his performance despite the stats showed he is a mediocre pitcher
by philadelphiacub on Jun 26, 2008 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm not insulting his mental makup.
I’m talking about a pitcher who has good stuff, sound mechanics, and a history of underachieving because he can’t seem to get it together mentally. Sure, referring to him as a head-case is obnoxious, but I’m not saying it to his face as an insult. I’m simply explaining why he is not a good pitcher. JohnM. cites exactly what I am talking about.

by Jimmyeatworld on Jun 26, 2008 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions
No, I won't.
Jason Marquis does not have good stuff. He may have good “mechanics” in some sense (doesn’t really get injured), but not if you consider the ability to throw good pitches or to locate any pitches consistently.
If you want to keep up with this...
you’ll have to take it up with someone else…
