"L" flag

According to Bruce Miles in today's Daily Herald, the Cubs are considering no longer flying the "L" flag to notify the El passengers and neighborhood if the Cubs lost.  The assumption would be that no "W" flag means a loss.  (What if it rains?)

I think this is goofy.  To me, getting rid of just the "L" flag makes the "W" flag an unneeded gimmick.Should they have a "Nice try" or "Played hard" flag?  I realize that I might not be in the majority, though, and want to know what others think.

same here

i’ve never seen them raise a flag after a loss… I’ve been to maybe 25 games in my life and I’ve never seen anything but the “W” flag go up… do they wait a while after the game to raise the “L” flag? We’ve stuck around wrigleyville for 3 or 4 hours after a game and I don’t ever remember seeing it

Go visit the Evil BCB sometime.

They actually follow Cubs games and fly the L flag when the Cubs lose. Seriously. For this reason alone, I wouldn’t mind seeing Wrigley Field do away with it.

A-bloody-men.

Flying the “L” not only gives you motivation for tomorrow, it makes flying the “W” feel that much better.

I'm thinking you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling, so why don't we just ignore each other til we go away.

Where is the

Get rid of it, and just fly the W flag? on the poll?

Personally I could care less about the L flag, but I think the W flag is a neat little gimmick.

The ‘M’ standing for “massacre,” of course.

According to Bob Brenly, it was Edmonds' fault.

Apparently, Bob thinks we’re playing 16” softball.

Well, Edmonds isn't as scrappy

It did seem like Jimbo took a long time to get the ball in, though. I was surprised when Mr. Toasted Sub (Quiroz; close enough) took third—apparently so was Edmonds.

Doesn’t excuse the Hamster, though. I had to pay $36 to watch the game. He had a better seat and he got paid to watch.

I could have picked

any of the first three options. but I chose numner three because I used to “use” that flag for information in the old days, and I’m sure there’s plenty of people who can’t waste their time on the Internet and cell phones all day due to work but still are big Cub fans who want to know the result on the way home.

Agreed

Its a nice touch to keep the everyday citizen informed about the results of games. Its simple yet effective. How many times have you been downtown or in another part of the City with a Cubs cap on after a game, and someone asks what the result was? Its happened to me plenty of times, I think its a cool gesture that keeps even very casual fans connected to a team that they may rarely (if ever) see play in person.

Edmonds with Cubs: .305 / .376 / .622

I like traditions....

Its the unique traditions that make every ball club and their fans unique from other clubs and fans. Traditions also tie us into the history of a ballclub if we chose to find out why its done. If it were to disappear, yeah we’d still be the Cubs, but a little bit of who we are would disappear with it. Its unique to the Cubs. So, lets keep it for its part of our history and makes us unique. If it does disappear I’d live with, but I hope it doesn’t.

I started my own Tradition

My office has a large picture window that over looks the floor below. I have been putting up a “W” or an “L” for the past several years. It shows my Bleeding Blue feelings. I have since added ’”Flags” for Santo, Banks, Williams, and Sandberg.

I love explaining the history of the W and L flags to those who have no idea.

As far as I'm Concerned

It should be Jenkins only. Sorry I love Maddux, but 31 will always be Jenkins for me, plus he went into the Hall as a Cub. Maddux will be a Brave.

Uniforms #'s Retired for 2 Players

The Yankees have retired #8 for both Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra. The Expos/Nationals have retired #10 for both Rusty Staub and Andre Dawson. Staub only played 3.5 seasons for Montreal. I don’t get that. Finally, the Cardinals have retired #42 for Bruce Sutter and Jackie Robinson. All MLB teams have retired #42 for Robinson. Of course, Robinson only played for the Dodgers.

Sutter only pitched four seasons for the Cardinals. Well, nobody else for St. Louis was going to wear #42 again anyway, so why not retire it for Sutter? I don’t believe the Cubs are considering retiring #42 for Sutter. I don’t think they should, anyway. I believe someone should have to play at least 8 seasons with a club before having a uniform number retired.

I love it.

My daughter is a figure skater and these “participation” awards are constantly being handed out at competitions. Makes me sick, no matter how well or poorly my kid performs.

What happens when youngsters grow up and discover – perhaps too late – that life is ENTIRELY about winning and losing.

Anyway, the “L” must stay. It’s a tradition that predates the idiots who are thinking of quashing it. And I’m sorry, but Rod Beck, no disrespect, had far greater problems, obviously, than the “bad Karma” from the blue flag.

Good grief

I think that without the L flag, the significance of the W flag is lessened.

I agree with the poster who wrote that this is another bit of W/L PC. Lets not acknowlege failure because nobody likes a loser. And who wants to be a loser when we can all be winners! YAY!

Hopefully, the Cubs will drop this idea and send the marketing genius who came up with it back to his hobbit hole in season ticket renewals.
