Sean Gallagher vs Javier Vazquez

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing from right to left field at 10-20 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 80.

Complete Coverage >

Tim Brown at Yahoo weighs in on interleague play, focusing on the three major-market clashes this weekend (Chicago, New York and Los Angeles). It's pretty good, but I could have done without the reference to "curses".

Alfonso Soriano may be able to return the week before the All-Star break. That article also says we should know by tomorrow about Z's availability for next Friday.

Phil Rogers asks "What if Kosuke Fukudome signed with the Sox?", a reasonable question since they did pursue him. For one thing, Nick Swisher might have become a Cub (there was some interest before the Fukudome signing).

Vazquez pitched well enough last Sunday at Wrigley Field, but Ryan Dempster pitched better. Eric Patterson and Aramis Ramirez homered off Vazquez, but Bruce Miles tells us that Patterson won't be in LF today:

Patterson botched a single by A.J. Pierzynski into a two-base error in the third. All day long, Sox runners successfully challenged Patterson's arm. Don't look for Patterson back out there again.

"I don't think so," Piniella said. "No. I don't think so. We'll put somebody else out there in left field."

Sean Gallagher has never faced the White Sox. He's gotten better with each outing. Today, the pressure is on: Sean, throw the game of your life. (And then get a new picture taken. That one is scary.)

Today's game is on Fox. The other game is Mets/Yankees; I'm not going to post all the markets because that's too long a list today, but it appears that you'll get the Cub game if you are west of the Appalachians (approximately) -- the only markets I can find in the West that won't get the Cub game are: Billings, Montana; Boise, Idaho; Dallas; Eugene, Oregon; Portland, Oregon; and the US Virgin Islands. Otherwise if you are in the Central, Mountain, or Pacific time zones (or Alaska or Hawaii), you should be able to see today's game. Click here to find your specific city. Thank you Lou!

...for not sending Error Patterson back out there. In the guy’s defense, he’s not an OF and was just doing what was asked. But does he remind anyone else of his brother? Very similar swing and has moments where he does JUST enough to make you think he’ll be something. It’s not the Patterson family tools that concern me, it’s the Patterson family baseball IQ.

I never thought I’d miss Soriano’s defense, lol!

So, they've given up on EPat...

...and probably rightly so. Gawd, he was horrid y’day.

Now do the right thing and bring Hoff back up. He hit better than EPat and although his outfield play wasn’t stellar, it beat what we saw y’day.

I guess that means either the RedHead or DeRo in left today? Is Fukudome able to play the field today?

Unknown at this time.

But I assume that if Fukudome can play the field, he’ll be out there and Ward will DH.

last time DeRo played left

he was awful too. Seems more comfy in right.

Hopefully they haven't

Lou has shown he is irrationally too quick on the trigger to lose faith in young guys so I can’t say he hasn’t given up on him but I really hope a couple dumb errors doesn’t ruin his career with the cubs.

Soriano news very encouraging

Damn, yesterday could have turned out completely different were it not for that stray pitch. I can’t wait till he’s back in the lineup and the AAA squad back in Iowa.

Gallagher

looks like someone just made a fart joke and he is trying really hard not to laugh out loud. A new pic is a very good idea. I don’t necessarliy like the mug shot pics some players have, but this is just not intimidating or professional looking at all.

Good morning

After avoiding all human contact and crying myself to sleep yesterday, I feel anew and spry for today’s game. Props to the Royals and the Twins.
There’s a good post on another blog making a case for DLee and his removal from my shit list: Blog
Not sure personally, but the author has a point.
A question: who’s got the call on Fox? Ah, it doesn’t matter… I’ll probably just hit SAP and listen to it in Spanish or whatever. It’ll probably be less annoying and offensive that way.
Go get ‘em boys!

by chilango2 on Jun 28, 2008 11:42 AM CDT   0 recs

While all those D-Lee numbers are correct...

... the 19 GIDP really bother me. That’s not only a career high for him - in half a season - but it is on pace to break the major league record (36, set by Jim Rice in 1984).

Think about it.

That’s one GIDP every 4.5 games. That’s a lot.

Just trying to do too much for the team

If he would push those down & away pitches to right instead of trying to pull everything doom & gloom would be over.

GIDP

Derrek has, for much of the last couple years, batted with few runners on base ahead of him. This year Theriot has been on base a lot, and especially on first a lot. So “half a season” is a bit misleading; you only ground into double plays with runners on first base. Last year he came to the plate 182 times with a runner on first and grounded into 15 double plays. In 2005 he came to the plate 187 times with a runner on first and grounded into 12. This year he’s already come to the plate 123 times with a runner on first and grounded into 19.

It’s still a lot of double plays, for sure, but he’s really had more like two-thirds of a recent season’s worth of double-play situations. For what it’s worth, Jim Rice came to the plate in 1984 TWO HUNDRED AND NINETY-ONE TIMES with a runner on first. From the looks of it, that ‘84 Red Sox team was an offensive powerhouse without much pitching.

Lee has always seemed to be a guy that, for the most part, hits the high pitches in the air and pounds low ones into the ground (take that with a grain of salt, because my only source for that is my eyes, I don’t see more than probably 20 games a year, and I’m far from a hitting expert). Maybe pitchers are pounding the low part of the strike zone with runners on base.

by aldimond on Jun 28, 2008 12:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

At almost sounds like a good thing that he's coming to the plate with more opportunities to score..

...just not converting?

by dtpollitt on Jun 28, 2008 12:33 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, a very good thing

He’s also on a pace to drive in and score many more runs than last year, despite dropping 50 points of OBP and several of slugging. Derrek has been converting just fine in my opinion; his bases-occupied splits are all over the chart, but I don’t really trust variations in those to be meaningful because of small sample size. Most of the things you collect more of when batting with more runners on base are good things, and double-plays cut in just a little. In Jim Rice’s 36-GIDP season he drove in 122 runs despite not having, by his standards, a very good year.

Lee’s GIDP rate this year is significantly higher so far than Rice’s was that season, and higher than what he’s done over his career. I’d be interested to know what the league does in general in terms of GIDP rate. The mean, and the variance from player to player. I don’t really have a resource for the variance, which is the interesting part, and I don’t have time right now to write a program to find it.

From another angle, according to b-r, Derrek has hit ground balls, fly balls, line drives in the following numbers this year: 129, 84, 55; last year: 189, 154, 109. That’s 48% of batted balls as compared to 42% last year. I’m not sure whether that’s within normal year-to-year variation in that stat, or how consistently that stat is kept anyway. More pertinently, 36.5% of all PAs this year, 29.1% last year. That’s a 25.4% increase in the rate. GIDP rate has increased from 8.2% of PAs with runners on first last year to 15.4% this year, an 87.8% increase in the rate. The increased ground-ball rate and the increased portion of his plate appearances with a runner on first don’t account for the total increase in GIDP rate. Outside of those factors lie things like defensive positioning, how hard he’s hitting his ground balls, and luck. I haven’t seen any pronounced shifts against Lee; it would make sense if his swing got off, swings that would produce hard line drives would turn into hard ground balls and double plays; I would guess that with the small sample size and the complication and precision of the double play there’s going to be a lot of luck-related noise in GIDP rate.

by aldimond on Jun 28, 2008 1:55 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I knew it was Theroit's fault

for clogging up the basepaths. If he would only ground out then Lee would be an offensive powerhouse.

Dusty was right.

Enjoy the sig, last day to complain.

Ha! Ha! Ha!

Good one, bubbamike.

Anyway, it seems to me that 19 GIDP out of 123 AB (2008 season so far) are more GIDP than 15 of 182 (2007) or 12 of 187 (2005). Too many, as a matter of fact. A good # 3 hitter learns how to take advantages of all those runners ahead of him.

by Fraggin Judge on Jun 28, 2008 2:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe if Lou bat Derrek in the cleanup spot and Rami in the 3-hole

Just for a few games, then Ramirez, with only 4 GDP and 20 doubles this season, would be far more likely to leave that base open for D. Lee, and maybe he could hit his way out of his slump or get a few BB opportunities, with the sizzling Jimmy Ballgame lurking in the 5th spot. Just a thought.

Good point on the blog.

Maybe we just expect too much from him. After all, with career numbers like these, .282/.367/.502, and being a gold glove first baseman, we shouldn’t be complaining like we are. It’s just the DP’s are driving everyone crazy I guess.

by Bump Bailey on Jun 28, 2008 12:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

yes. That is what I often do is these

“dire” situations (TiVo w/radio feed of Pat & Ron). The lag is about 5-6 seconds. What is odd that sometimes after commercial breaks, you have to re-sync as it moves by 2-3 seconds again. But I use the popping of the mitt as the pitcher warms up to get the picture and sound lined up. That seems to be the best way to do it.

THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!

by LAcarl519 on Jun 28, 2008 1:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ahhh...ok..

So you’re saying your TiVo has a radio feed? I just have DVR with no radio feed that I know of. I was thinking of getting a digital audio recorder, but I’m not entirely sure that works either.
I like the popping of the mitt thing. That would work really good I would think.

If you have a computer radio tuner...

you can record any audiio feed with an audio recorder set to record whatever sound is coming out of the sound card (that is, whatever you hear through the speakers). That’s the old analog hole that the RIAA cannot close and people use to record music MP3’s.

Last time Grace (and I don’t recall who the PBP guy was that day) was in the Fox booth for a Saturday Sox game when the opponent was not the Cubbies all Grace did was pine for the Cubbies. I could have tolerated some Cublove but it was way over the top. More effective than Syrup of Ipecac.

"Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball." - Jacque Barzun

by Bump Bailey on Jun 28, 2008 1:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No dodge, but...

... I don’t want to spend my afternoon arguing about broadcasters.

To sum it up, Hawk is Harry Caray-like to me. That is a larger than life, cartoonish character. Sometimes I laugh and enjoy his shtick and sometimes not.

by DrCrawdad on Jun 28, 2008 1:18 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You're right...

...but the subject of the Hawk brings up a lot of anger in some Cubbie fans.

by DrCrawdad on Jun 28, 2008 1:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hawkish

I don’t know about that. IIRC I’ve seen quite a bit of anger and venom spilled here at BCB about Hawk. He’s a cartoon figure, take him at that.

by DrCrawdad on Jun 28, 2008 1:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

1986

IIRC Hawk was GM back in ‘86 and that silly experiment ended shortly thereafter. So, one year as GM doesn’t have much if any effect on my view of him as a broadcaster.

I didn't want to start an argument....

just curious, that’s all.

by Bump Bailey on Jun 28, 2008 1:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The real Hawk ...

... but that statement above pretty much is what I have to say about Hawk. I know Cubbie fans almost universally hate Hawk but I’ve stated before that IF Hawk were a Cubbie broadcaster Cubbie fans would probably have the same feelings towards him that Sox fans do. And of course, then Sox fans would hate Hawk.

by DrCrawdad on Jun 28, 2008 1:47 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Not only Cub fans. Fans of other AL teams hate the Sox broadcast too.

It’s not only the excessive partisanship. That’s laughable and understandable. It’s that, in general, the broadcast is uninformative, the announcers add nothing to the game, they irritate the knowledgeable fans and are bad, overall.

The pressure in this series has got to be on the White Sox.

Minnesota is playing out of thier minds right now. And has closed with in 1/2 game of the Sox. Meanwhile, We are “comfrotably” ahead with a 4 1/2 game lead.

While a 5 or 5 1/2 game lead would be great. Remember it could be alot worse.

It is quite ridiculous...

...how the Twins do this every damn year, no matter who’s on their team, who’s injured, or who they have traded away or let go via free agency. After living in Minnesota for 12 years, I truly believe the Twins successes are the model for small market teams. Well, that sans the stadium. Their farm system is always good, they turn key players for a handful of prospects, and they are brash. I really like the Twins.

I fully absolve Dempster of all blame

for yesterday’s mess. Lou put his next-to-worst possible defense out there behind him. When will Lou get over his speedy LHB fetish? When will he figure out that everyone had last Monday off, so they don’t need Saturday off as well? When will he figure out that Patterson and Fontenot aren’t ML players? Why did he use Cotts in a mop-up sitation when his other LHP is injured?

OK, that game is behind us and today is a new day. Gallagher has been pitching well and the Sox have never seen him. Hopefully, Lou will put a real lineup behind him today, DLee will hit the ball in the air, and the Cubs will destroy the Sox.
