I did mention this other day and have never spent anytime looking into it…but it seems that Cardinals have caught the back end of a team’s rotation a bunch of times. When your current pitching staff consists of a bunch of 3,4,5 guys it makes it easier to win when you are facing like talent.

I feel that Jim Hendry is a good GM, in that he is aggressive and is always looking for moves to improve the major league club. That said, when you look around MLB, you see teams like Boston that have seemingly endless depth in the minors, or teams like Cincy or San Diego that are bringing up their ”#1 prospect” to the majors. The Cubs really don’t have a prospect in the organization that would receive that kind of fanfare at this point in time.

I will once again post a comment on pitching coaches...

It seems that the White Sox changed their approach to our hitters. Did we change our approach to theirs? I continue to hope that the Cubs will replace Larry Rothschild and either get Greg Maddux (if he retires this year) or get someone else.

I really think we have a sub-par link as this is the only guy left from the Dusty era (I know he worked for Lou before!). It just seems to me that the Sox changed how they pitched to us and their batters really had a good approach to our pitchers this week. It seemed that their batters knew what to expect. Maybe that has something to do with young Geo calling games behind the plate. But again, Larry needs to help him change his pattern of pitch calling (notice how Gallagher ALWAYS has trouble the second time through the order).

I love this Cub team, but I always feel like we don’t get the most out of our pitching.

But either way, let’s wipe this weekend off our faces and have a good trip to San Francisco.

THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!

by LAcarl519 on Jun 29, 2008 10:26 PM CDT reply actions

Well, what a difference a week makes...

...we dismantled the Sox last week, 22 – 11, and were dismantled this week, 21 – 9. We looked downtrodden, sluggish, and in dire need of a few of Soriano’s lead-off home runs or Zambrano’s broken bats to jump start things. Last time Alfonso was hurt, we were fine, but this time it was clear we needed our starters back, and our bench players coming off the bench. I was really disappointed by our lack of patience; earlier today I posted that we were waiting for Buerhle to pitch to us, rather than waiting for the right pitch to drive. Where did our patience go? Out the window this weekend.

This might be a good jolt of reality – Lou got fired up, everyone looked like crap this weekend…maybe a good regrouping on the plane or organization of thoughts will do us good.

The Giants are a bad, bad team, and they showed it this month. They are six games back in the worst division in baseball, and this month: after losing 2/3 to the Mets, they swept 4 games from the Nationals, lost 2/3 from a bad Colorado team, lost 4/6 from Oakland, lost 2/3 from the Tigers, lost 2/3 from a bad Royals team, and took 2/3 from a bad Cleveland team. That’s 13-13 this month, granted, but only Oakland is above .500, and nearly a quarter of wins came from the Nationals, the second worst team in baseball.

Our probables are as follows:

Lilly vs Zito – a new arm slot for Zito has shown improvements, but he’s 0-7 with a 7+ ERA at home

Marquis vs Cain – a dangerous pitcher and dangerous game

Dempster vs Correla – who’s sporting nearly a 5 ERA, we can take this game

Gallagher vs Lincecum – the ace of the staff @ 9-1 with a sub 2.5 ERA

I see two low scoring games in 1 & 3, a rough, high scoring victory in game 2, and a great pitching duel in the finale. Let’s take 3/4 from these guys, and get ramped up for a fantastic showdown with the Cardinals.

Good match-ups...

...Brewers will be at Arizona, and they won’t throw Sheets, but will face Davis/Ownings/Johnson/Webb, which is great news for us. The Thursday game is 8-2 Parra vs 12-4 Webb.

...and the Cardinals host the Mets for four games, but will miss Santana thanks to a doubleheader on Friday that changed their rotation a bit. Cardinals are gonna take that series, IMO.

Pretty astute analysis

I’ll say Cubs take three of four. Oddly, I think they’ll beat Lincecum (after all, they did last year … :)

by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 29, 2008 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Not to mention that before the all-star break...

we have 4 San Fran, 3 Cards, then a 6 game home stand with the Reds and Giants. Barring that Cardinals series, we can make a good lil streak of wins here – 9-4 or 10-3, anyone? 6/7 or 5/7 Giants, 1/3 or 2/3 Cards, and a sweep of the Reds?

How can so many of you expect to take 3 of 4?

The Cubs are NOT plying well in any aspect of the game right now. I’m hopeful they can turn it around but to expect them to all of a sudden win a series on the road while they’re still banged up sounds unrealistic.

Agree

look at the TB series. But for CM’s melt-down, those were all very good games against one of the top teams in the majors. The O’s series… not so good. This series, except for the first game, they were all good games against the 3d best home team in the ML who were additionally motivated. Teams that are tracking for mid 90s in wins don’t suck for 70 games.

Unless we acquire sabathia or harden this season is going to end in heartbreak

Theres no way in hell we can win in october with this garbage rotation we are throwing out there right now, its pathetic. It could not be more obvious that this has the potential to be “the year” never have we had a better lineup and solid bullpen like this to win it all. We need two frontline starters in the rotation to even be considered national league favorites because what we have now is only good enough to get by for now

"This is why Major League Baseball does not need instant replay, because then every single play will then be reviewed." -- Joe Morgan, 5/18/08, referring to an umpire ruling a Carlos Delgado homerun foul when replays showed it hit the foul pole.

The other thought on that.....

(and I’m a huge purveyor of the offense)......is runs….no matter how good your offense is…are hard to come by in October…

I DO NOT like the current rotation in a “short series”.....against a LOT of teams…...I don’t like the “match up’s”...It’s like the Cubs have a “1”...but not the best “1 and a lotta 4’s…..(or 3’s)

I don’t see any shut down guys…..Z is a legit #1…....but game 1 is a 50/50 prop….....I like demp…but I’m scared he’ll be tired come fall…...so that makes Demp and Lily ” 3’s”......Marsh, Gallagher, Marquiss, Lieber, Maddux?? (et. al.) , ....5’s…...you want to throw them in a short series????

All that said…you gotta score to win….

So for a team trying for a championship, this was not the way to end interleague play. Although all these teams are contenders in their divisions, there is no reason why this team shouldn’t have gone 2 for 3 in each series. Tampa Bay isn’t that good, and the orioles are a .500 team. they just swept the sox last weekend, what the sox got all new w players in a week? I don’t think so. This was and is unexcusable. Winning teams win, no matter what, and no matter who is playing. Ask the cardinals and brewers about that. the excuse making needs to stop. This was unexcusable, poor play for a team that is now favored to go all the way.

Having said that though, it’s time to dust themselves off, move on to SF, beat the pants off them, and take 2 out of 3 in St louis before the break. After that, Johnson, Soriano and Zambrano should be back, and this team can focus on the stretch run because it’s going to go right down to the wire again.

by nmcubsfan on Jun 30, 2008 4:01 AM CDT reply actions

Tampa Bay is a really good team.

And Baltimore are 2 games over .500 in a very tough division, division that Tampa Bay plays in, as well. The Sox murder people at home, and they are a good team. The Cub made crucial defensive and pitching mistakes in all three of those series, and they paid for it.

Yeah, they have a crap-ass field to play on, but they play decent on the road too.

I agree that they should have performed better against the O’s. Pitching was atrocious for the Cubs.

by nimblenikelfoos on Jun 30, 2008 7:48 AM CDT reply actions

I follow baseball as much as I can…......kinda hard from kuwait you know.

Either way, on paper before the season, the rays weren’t expected to be that good. Nobody expected them to contend. So either a bunch of people underestimated them(very likely) or their due for a correction. Remember they’re still in the same division as the Red Sox and the Yankees so nothing is a gimmie for them.

However, the cubs were/are supposed to be their equal or better. They haven’t won in 100 years, lest anybody has forgotten, and this “well they were good teams and we played well against them but their in the AL and in a tough division” is crap. We should have beat them. Plain and simple. Winners win, and if the cubs want to be winners and bring a trophy back to wrigley, then they need to win, no matter who is in the opposite dugout, and no matter who is on the field. Yes, I know that the cubs won’t win all the games. But getting swept by a team, ANY team is unacceptable. and it’s happened twice now within two weeks. They need to play better. Losing sucks, and this team has had way too much of it.
