Bannister
is 3-0 in June and a much better pitcher in day games, so I’m hoping this trend continues. The picture of him in mid-pitch on the Royals’ site is kinda funny though, kinda like Gomer Pyle. Well, Golllll-ly!
Then I saw the team photos and it occurred to me that I really miss Grudzielanek. Sigh. GO ROYALS!!!!

Can anyone explain...
....how Tampa Bay can have the 2nd best record in the majors with a payroll a fraction of the Cubs??? Are we overpaying for talent that doesn’t pan out?

it's quite obvious how they are good this year
after years and years of being bad, the rays get high draft picks. Once those draft picks pan out, then they will be good. Plus, those draft picks don’t get paid that much except for longoria.

No, that would be the Yankees
And who, pray tell, has the best record?

Hey, sometimes
teams draft well…and that’s the case in TB. When you have as many great draft choices as the Rays have had, sometimes you just have to be smart enough to pick good talent. Evan Longoria, at 3B—is going to be a stud, if he hasn’ t proven that already.
However, young teams can only go so far if they are not supported over the long run by a veteran or two. Or, as in the case of their in-state rivals, the Marlins—you trade the young talent away since you cannot pay them. (Longoria was signed to a long-term contract right away)
Only time will prove if the Rays will actually draw, make some cash, pay their players, etc.
The Marlins have proven they can’t sustain success and need to get out of that football stadium.

I think we do pretty well there
Soto, Gallagher, Zambrano, Wood, Marmol—-all farm products. Many others, having been traded, are doing well for other teams. Tampa Bay is more in the mindset of building from the ground up, while the Cubs are under pressure to win now. Are there any particular players who, in your opinion, are overpaid for their contributions to the team?

....do you think he is worth $18 million per year? We are still in 1st place by 3.5 games without him. Edmonds was a super bargain in comparison as was Reed Johnson.

This team misses Soriano.
They are 8-8 since he was hit (including that game as he missed most of it).
You can laugh, but he can carry a team as he did last September, and in May. I’d say that’s worth the $.

You think Soriano is unnecessary????
That is laughable. IF we didn’t pay him, the Cardinals might have, or the Brewers…..do you actually think LF has been in better hands since he hit the DL? Z makes that much too….and doesn’t play every day…..
by crazymountain on Jun 29, 2008 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I didn't say he was unnecessary...
....I said I think he is overpaid. Sure he can carry a team, the question is when. He is so darn inconsistent. He was great in June. He stunk in May. Who knows what he will do in September? With him, its a maddening crapshoot. Also, don’t forget he hit .143 in last year’s NLDS. Finally, while his RISP average this year is .322, his RISP w/2 outs average is .194.

He is only overpaid
if the market doesn’t support his salary. I don’t think that was the case.
As to his average in last years NLDS, judging any player on his performance in a short series is short sighted. Any number of very good players have had bad series, sometimes those series’ come during the playoffs, sometimes not. Sometimes very bad player has a good series. You can’t judge on that basis. Small sample sizes give bad results.

I believe it was
The Texas Rangers who signed him and set the market rate. He was worth it to them at the time and he was worth it to the Yankees when they traded for him. You fail to understand the free market. No one is forced to pay what him his salary, they chose to do so because he is worth it. There are a limited amount of people who can play at his level, so if you want one you have to pay. Now he would be worth more to the Yankees if they played him in his position rather than at 3rd base as he is a much better shortstop than Jeter is. But it is their choice.
Baseball is too much of a sport to be a business and too much of a business to be a sport.

My question is...
....who do you think would have paid his asking price of $30 million per year if the Yankees didn’t? Sadly even though the market decides the player’s worth, it doesn’t mean crap if no one is willing to pay. A perfect example is the stock market and the Internet bubble of 2000.

the allowing of stock options to be carried on the books as assets, which falsely set value. It is not the same thing.

Do you say you know what GM’s around baseball are thinking?
by crazymountain on Jun 29, 2008 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
WRONG
Nobody challenged bubbamike’s assertion that a player is only overpaid if the market doesn’t support his salary. So I will. That statement assumes that the market is smart. The market is only as smart as its ability to measure and predict a player’s contribution to team success. A player can very definitely be overpaid if the market supports his salary and the market is wrong about his ability to help a team win.
by aldimond on Jun 29, 2008 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, really all players are overpaid.....
So, just what are you looking for? Ted Williams caught the same shit because he made $100,000. So did DiMaggio. Mantle had a triple crown year and took a pay cut the next season. I do not understand what you are saying.
He is streaky, Soriano is. However the market IS WHAT IT IS. Why cry about the market? I am glad we have him. Also, don’t forget that WITHOUT Soriano, we do not get to the NLDS last year. No way in hell do we get above 3rd last year without him. Be glad we were in the NLDS.

Agreed on Edmonds and Johnson
Ultimately the market determines the monetary value of a player. If the Cubs set this at $18 mil./yr., and no one else tops it, then that is his market value. His contribution to the team determines his real value, and so far I’d say he is irreplaceable. If his injury were any more serious, it would cost the Cubs big $ to replace his run production.

Let's be real...
no one is worth $18 million to play baseball. But he players gets paid what a team is willing to pay them. Hence, the Cubs were willing to give Soriano $136 million dollars. If the Cubs hadn’t offered $136 million, another would would have offered it and Soriano would be wearing another uniform.

In two starts against the Brewers. And last time, he had 2 RBI in Miller Park. Can the Twins pick ‘em or what?

Anyone see..
Burnett pitched 7 innings and had 11 K’s in a 1-0 Jays win? I know he isn’t super high on some peoples list but he is on the list I think for others

He is underrated
Look at his career ERA. It is in the mid 3’s and I know he is not the same pitcher as before (injuries effect), but he can be a number three pitcher for the Cubs. I don’t know what the Jays really want, but I can tell they seriously need a heavy dosage of power and OBP. ‘
IMO, I think the Jays want Burnett gone. He has a heavy contract that they want to unload and if the Cubs can get him without giving up their best prospects. Keep in mind though tta Burnett has an option next year and that may be the big risk (that is, if the Cubs get him).
by Geo4MVP on Jun 29, 2008 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Completely agree..
When on he is very good, but those 2 option years are scarry b/c thats a lot of money there. But it all depends on which guys the Cubs want the most. If we can’t get C.C. it might come down to Burnett.

It might be safer to get Burnett
We all know that the Indians would want at least two type A prospects (which they will never get from any team). Then, the bad thing about getting Sabathia is that the Cubs probably can’t afford to spend any more $$$ in the offseason considering they are in the process of being sold. Burnett on the other hand will be booked in the Cubs payroll for next year and the year after, but that is considering he does not turn down the option years. However, he has expressed he love Chicago and really wants to pitch for the Cubs.

I think Burnett would like to pitch for the Cubs
but I wasn’t overly impressed when I saw him pitch against the Cubs in Toronto. I might be mistaken on this, but isn’t he a bit of a clubhouse problem, too?
by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 29, 2008 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i don't think so
all the cubs players that talked about Burnett said that they wouldn’t mind having him come over. The situation with the fans and all that stuff occurred in the moment. He apologized right after so i don’t think there is a problem with him.
by lexmarklover on Jun 29, 2008 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
People thought Edmonds was going become a clubhouse problem with Big Z
But that never happened and I think Burnett will be do just fine. Lets hope Hendry does get the right SP for this team because I don’t know how long Dempster can keep up his remarkable breakout season.
by Geo4MVP on Jun 29, 2008 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I really think Dempster gets a bad rap
He’s had what, 14-15 good outings and one bad one. Yet a lot of people think the one bad one is more representative of his pitching than the 14-15 good ones. Amazing.
He has shown potential to be this kind of a pitcher, back when he was with Florida and Cincinnati. He busted his tail to get into shape for this season. And, truth be told, I think he was a pretty decent closer, too.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 29, 2008 3:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
ppl that i hear just say it's one bad outing
every pitcher has a couple in a year. Also, I thought he was a decent closer but ppl wanted a change because he was always so nerve wracking.
by lexmarklover on Jun 29, 2008 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know he's not a bad SP
It’s just that how long can he keep his ERA in the 2’s. He probably will keep his ERA well below the 4’s, but I don’t know how long Demps and Z can carry the load. Lily needs to become more consistent; otherwise the Cubs will really need a SP.
by Geo4MVP on Jun 29, 2008 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the Cubs do need another SP
But not too many teams have studs pitching 1-5, or even 1-4.

Yeah...but this is an all or nothing year for Hendry
Let’s just say if the Cubs don’t win a WS, he will not return next year. Therefore, expect Hendry to make the best reasonable deal.
by Geo4MVP on Jun 29, 2008 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He will def. make a deal
no doubt about that
by lexmarklover on Jun 29, 2008 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know about that
Of course, they’re going to go for broke, mostly because of the 100-year thing. I think Hendry’s done a great job, but he’ll remain in that post at the pleasure of the new owner, WS or not.
He will make a deal, rest assured.

he was under contract to somebody and the Cubs needed to get him via trade. If he’s out there for the taking, give him the league minimum and let’s see what he can do.

If he can show some potential as the number 3 SP or even a better SP than Marquis/Gallagher, then expect Hendry to sign Garcia to a minor league deal.

but the bottom line is he has a .500 record. While he has the potential to be a top of the rotation starter, he has only shown glimpses, he still has not put it all together.

i think he's clean too
but come on how do you come off the DL right away and hit like .700 in the first 5 games. Pujols really pisses me off though, he comes off as a team guy but i remember hearing that when he lost the MVP to Ryan Howard he cried and cried talking bout how he deserves to be the MVP. I’m sure he hasnt taken steroids but he really gets on my nerves.

HGH is what helps you recover from injuries,
not steroids. I assume it is HGH (which is difficult to test for) that you are suspicious about?
Ankiel had the clinic in FLA that sent him HGH, remember?

they haven't proven that HGH heals you
its suspected to, but they aren’t sure exactly what it does in a healthy body, its usually used for kids with hormonal imbalances, etc…
and by this you all sound like sour grapes… i bet you’d be pissed off if someone said b/c Sori is a fast healer he’s on stuff.

no. I would not be surprised
if “people” said the same thing about Soriano. It is a common accusation about anyone who is thin and hits for power these days. I don’t have sour grapes about any of it.
I was just clarifying the point about steroids v HGH. :-)

Where in the holy hell did Chris Carpenter come from
after his blue jay days. I know he had surgery but there are some players on the cardinals team that come outta nowhere. Tony LaRussa just annoys that crap outta me though cause he just does things to try to annoy the opponent. Like when he accused the Sox of stealing their signs, and how he thinks he’s going to shock everybody this year by having his so called great team prove to the media that they underlooked this team.
No offense to tony but i dont think his team is all that great. They caught luck with their starting pitchers, Ankiel and Ludwick are streaky at best (not sayting that Soriano isn’t) but Soriano is better than those two players, and their bullpen will not be as strong as they have been.
by lexmarklover on Jun 29, 2008 3:43 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
This is why baseball is not a sprint
Baseball exposes the pretenders and I believe the Cardinals are pretenders. They will lose down the stretch because teams will figure out their mediocre SP.
