Steve Stone
Any thoughts from anyone regarding Steve Stone as a Sox radio announcer now?
I personally found this shocking, especially after half of the season passing by without knowing. I also found this interesting considering what happened in 2004 and because it's the second series of the season between the Cubs and Sox. My wife is a huge Stone fan and felt it was the perfect way to stick it to the Cubs. I think even FOX mentioned this on yesterday's game.
Just found this interesting....

As I told you when you emailed me this...
... this was discussed at length when he was hired. Stone’s a bitter old man who got quite arrogant in his last couple of years with the Cubs. His time has passed. I don’t think this has anything to do with “sticking” it to anyone. Stone wanted a job and the Sox had one available. He happens to like living in Chicago, thus it was a good situation to accept.
Let’s move on. I’ve had enough of Stone.

During the season he does, and has for years...
... including the time after he left the Cubs.

Sure, he might have a "place" here now
but he didn’t before he worked for the White Sox. He lived (lives) in Phoenix (where his wife lives) and traveled with espn and also back and forth to chicago. Saying he lives in Chicago is like saying all players live in the city they play for. Some do, but most don’t.

I guess I could have been clearer.
I am well aware Stone’s permanent home is in the Phoenix area. However, he likes Chicago and has lived here during the season for years and wanted to work in this media market. Maybe that makes more sense.

I agree with Al
Stone became very arrogant his last couple of years. Although some of the Cubs acted like jerks in 2004, Stone took every opportunity to throw kerosine on the fire. As far as I’m concerned he is just a bitter ex employee. Harry would be very disappointed in the guy Stone turned out to be.
by Rick B on Jun 29, 2008 8:12 AM CDT 0 recs
This guy?

Stone played for the White Sox, as did Ron Santo, so it’s not really a big deal.

I don't know him personally
But I talked to a client who golfed in the same foursome with Stone, and said he is just about the biggest ass he has ever met. He professed to having been a fan of his broadcasting and looked forward to meeting him before, now he said he will never listen to him again.

I heard a Stone story from his playing days
with the Cubs that forever changed my opinion of him. A client of my brother’s told us of going to see a Cubs game in the mid-seventies and sitting right near where Stone was warming up. The client had gone to college with Stone, lived in the same frat house and were part of a fairly close knit group. Anyway, he calls over to him and say’s “hi Steve, remember we were in school together, etc.” Stone turns to him and says “Who gives a f…...?” and turns away. So, yeah, I can totally believe that he’s an arrogant jerk and I can sort of understand where a lot of the anti-Stone feeling was coming from in ‘04.
Brenly, for what it’s worth, is one of the nicest, most down-to earth guys you could ever meet.
by bluekoolaide on Jun 29, 2008 10:01 AM CDT 0 recs
Maybe the client of your brother
is an ignorant jerk and thinks he can just walk up to a pitcher who is warming up for his start and decide to have a conversation on his terms? How many people do you think tell players they know them or grew up with them or went to school with them when they probably only know of said player?
Takes a lot of ignorant balls to walk up to a starting pitcher in the bullpen and try to get his attention.

Maybe, but...
... if you thought said starting pitcher was a close friend (which appears to have been the case), a “Hey, I’m busy, catch you later” response would have been more appropriate.

okay, but you are taking the "side"
of a person who has a brother who knows a guy who may or may not actually know Stone and probably felt slighted and might have exagerated the story over the years because he was embarassed in front of his friends/girlfriend/kid/whatever.
I’ll side with the fact that Steve Stone was a professional starting pitcher who was not only in his routine, but was warming up on the bullpen mound, who didn’t want to be interrupted by anyone and anyone who knows anything about baseball would have let the guy alone. Instead, this guy acted like he was the one who mattered and that Stone should just take himself out of his pregame warmup just to acknowledge to his friends or whatever that he knew Steve Stone.
Who sounds like the arrogant jerk now?

Why do you think he can’t get a job in baseball? ESPN dumped him and the only thing he could get was a last minute deal with the Sox. Hope he stays there for good.
He thinks he’’s the smartest man in baseball, but no one in the game shares that opinion. Why do you think he never got a sniff at a GM job? He lobbied for the chance, but his acerbic personality turns off most people. BTW, the players were right in ‘04.

This is a great diary
Great. The best thing about Stone with the White Sox is that is made me dislike Farmer less because Stone is the biggest arrogant SOB. Its great to first guess and be right buts its another thing to do it for just about every at bat and be right about 5% of the time.
Hawk Harrelson, Ozzie, Kenny and Steve. They are the perfect group of arrogant jackassess.

I don't have a problem
with Steve Stone. I don’t even have a problem with Joe Morgan. It’s June 29th, and our Cubbies have the best record in the National League…..End of story.

I like Stone, too
He and Farmer provide the only listenable White Sox broadcasts. Maybe he is a little arrogant, but he also is one of the best, if not the best, at what he does. So that doesn’t surprise me.
I wish he still were with the Cubs, but Brenly is a good replacement. I liked Brenly when he was with the Cubs the first go-round, too.

Yes.
He did radio for the Cubs in 1990 and 1991.

Let's be honest
I don’t remember too many Cubs fans complaining about Stone when he was with the Cubs. He most certainly was correct in the showdown he had with Dusty in 2004.
Some of the carping about Stone today comes off as sour grapes, IMHO.

That is 100% true.
He wasn’t thrown under the bus. Instead, the truth is that he didn’t just burn bridges, he reduced them to ashes with a flamethrower. John McDonough could have fired him, instead, he gracefully let Stone quit.

Len Kaspar sucks
There, I said it. And believe me I am not the only Cub fan in this town who thinks that. Kaspar is a rambling anal retentive weenie. He is so in over his head for the job of being play-by-play announcer for the Chicago Cubs that it’s not even funny. It can be the middle of a bases loaded rally and there’s Kaspar babbling about the fictious podcast studio for the 100th millionith time or something similarily boring / assinine. He sucks. The only redeeming thing is that Bob Brenly is around to slap him upside the head on ocassion.

Could someone....
...please give specifics of how Steve Stone “Burned Bridges” with the Cubs or what he did that was so awful during that unforgettable ‘04 season. I remember Stone calling out bad, selfish. stupid baseball which BB has been doing since he replaced Stoney. If he is “Sticking” it to the Cubs then why does he give a fair and balanced assessment of the Cubs when he’s giving his Chicago Baseball Analysis on the Score, most of this year he has been very fair with the Cubs most of the time proclaiming the Cubs are the team to beat in the NL. This doesn’t sound like a bitter old man to me.
by troutfishin on Jun 30, 2008 9:49 AM CDT 0 recs
DAMN
Steve Stone is the best color analyst the Cubs have ever had. Bar none. Yes, that includes Brenly. That’s no slight to Bob though. He’s very good as well and would like him to stay a long time.
Stoney got screwed by the Cubs because he was unafraid to tell it like it is and being truthful with with fans in his analysis. And as the ONLY person in this thread to have actually met the man, I can say that his arrogance has been GREATLY exaggerated. I met Steve during a ballgame at the Arizona Fall League last year. There was another fan there and we had a spirited conversation for a couple of innings before Steve excused himself and left for home.
It’s amazing how much credence you people give second or third hand accounts of someone’s demeanor. Stuff that would never hold up in a court of law is considered rock solid evidence by his haters here.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
by WayneCampbell08 on Jun 30, 2008 1:02 PM CDT 0 recs
It's not from second or third hand accounts.
It’s from listening to him on Sox broadcasts and on his weekly radio gigs. Much of what’s stated here are opinions, which require no evidence. You like Brenly; I happen to think he’s a bilious, biased hack. To each his own. “In matters of taste, there can be no dispute.”

Steve Stone-whiner...
Does any one remember in the 1970’s when Stone left the Cubs to go to Baltimore? He basically called the Cub orginization a minor leage oufit and expressed how happy he was to leave. He should have stayed in Baltimore where the east coast could appreciate his giant ego.
