I think the general consensus is that Jason Marquis is WILDLY uneven ( often just bad) drives us nuts and Lou has zero faith in him. However there is also a consensus that he can't be traded unless the Cubs eat most of his very back loaded contract ( almost 10 million for next year). At first I thought what the hell he is a distraction, he does not want to go the BP and if we got Maddux or some other 3-5 starter we have no where to put him but er um I have changed my mind. The thing is we really do have to think about the future much as we only want to think of THIS year. Next year Dempster's contract is up and if as everyone here seems to want we make a run at an ace we all know that Gallagher will surely be in the mix. I don't think we can count on signing an ace to muli-year deal so in theory you can go into 09 with just Z and Lilly , maybe Marshall if he has not been traded. Personally I would like to see the Cubs spend the money to re-sign Demp depending on what he wants but the bottom line is that Marquis is an innings eating 5th starter and we just dump him we are either going to have to put in some really unprepared kids or go and spend a lot of money on another over paid 4th , 5th starter. Ironically if we are lucky enough to get Maddux back he might help straighten him out as he was his mentor back when he was a decent pitcher with the Braves. So I say if we are get some pitching help THIS year, stick Jason in the bullpen whether he likes it or not. Lou is basically only going to use him when the Cubs are up or down by six runs anyway and the way Lou uses the bullpen ( only Wood, Marmol and the lefty exist for purposes of winning games) you will hardly notice him except when
Lou uses him to pinch hit and pinch run ( he does have his uses)
Not a ringing endorsement but still I say better to keep him around than eat 10 million.
