Minor League Wrap--June 29
I hardly ever criticize the umpires, but Cub fans should keep in mind, when looking at the results of individual games, that the two umpires who were behind the plate and at first base in the Cub-White Sox game tonight were not only minor league umpires, but they're considered good minor league umpires. That tells you something about the quality of umpiring in the minor leagues. Now over the course of a season this usually evens out, but that's why I warn against overreacting to any one game.
OK Daytona goes first tonight. I think you'll know why.
Daytona Cubs
The Daytona Cubs lost to the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 3-2 in 20 innings.
That's right. Twenty innings.
Grant Johnson started the game and allowed two runs in three innings. He gave up three hits, walked two and struck out three.
Then the bullpen settled in for a long game. Jeremy Papelbon allowed three hits in three innings, but didn't walk anyone and struck out four. In the next 13.1 innings, the Cubs bullpen allowed only four hits. Of course, they walked 12, although five of those were intentional. Finally, third baseman Jonathan Mota went out onto the mound to pitch. He pitched a scoreless 19th inning but then gave up an unearned run in the 20th inning. The winning run scored on an error by Robinson Chirinos, who had moved over to third base when Mota went to the mound.
But hey, Chirinos was 2 for 5 with a double and three walks. He scored both runs. That was probably the only good hitting line of the night. Shortstop Darwin Barney was 0 for 8. Ryan Harvey was 0 for 6 with four strikeouts and a walk.
There may have been a reason they let Mota pitch. He was 0 for 8 with a walk and five strikeouts.
Iowa Cubs
The I-Cubs outlasted the Albuquerque Isotopes, 7-5.
Jeff Samardzija got his first AAA win. The results were quite good: one run allowed on four hits in six innings. He struck out four, which is also nice. The bad part was the six walks.
Blake Parker and Jim Brower both allowed two runs in their relief stints.
Second baseman Bobby Scales was 2 for 4 with a walk and his tenth home run of the season. Jason Dubois hit his tenth home run for Iowa as well in a 1 for 2 afternoon. Dubois walked and scored twice. Micah Hoffpauir was 2 for 4 with a double, a walk and two RBI.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies beat the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, 4-1.
Esmailin Caridad improved his record to 2-0 in the Southern League with 6.1 strong innings of work. Caridad allowed one run on five hits and three walks. He struck out two.
Jose Ceda continues to impress in AA. He picked up his third save with two innings of work. He allowed one hit, walked nobody and struck out three.
Second baseman Nate Spears was 2 for 5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Center fielder Sam Fuld was 2 for 5. Right fielder Doug Deeds was 2 for 4.
Catcher Mark Reed hit a solo home run in a 1 for 4 evening. It was his first home run of the season.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs edged the Kane County Cougars, 4-3.
Dae-Eun Rhee had only his second bad start of the season. Rhee pitched three innings and allowed three runs on five hits and four walks. He struck out two.
Zach Ashwood got the win with two innings of scoreless relief. Ashwood allowed one hit and two walks. He struck out one.
Jordan Latham got his first save of the year. He pitched two innings and allowed only one hit. He didn't walk anyone and struck out one Cougar.
Second baseman Elvis Lara was 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. DH Luis Bautista was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Boise Hawks
The Hawks scored two runs in the ninth inning to beat the Yakima Bears, 5-4.
Jose Piña pitched the first two innings without allowing a hit or a run. He walked one and struck out three.
Bubba O'Donnell allowed an unearned run in the ninth inning and was in line for the loss before the Hawks came back. He allowed two hits, no walks and struck out one in the inning he pitched.
First baseman Rebel Ridling was 2 for 4 with a three-run home run and a double that ignited the ninth inning rally. Left fielder David Macias was 2 for 4.
Josh Vitters continued his hitting streak with a 1 for 4 effort.
AZL Cubs
The AZL Cubs embarrassed the AZL Royals, 18-1.
Felix Pie played in this game on a rehab assignment. He hit a grand slam and went 2 for 3 total with a walk and five RBI. His hand seems fine.

Jeez, Rebel Ridling. Also, a special thanks to you for keeping up on all this, Josh. I used your information on Ridling in my broadcast today.
Also: According to AZ Phil, the rehab assignment may not be the whole story with Felix. If he’s right, I’m disappointed.

Cool
although the only information I had was straight from MiLB.com. I guess I put it in a nice package.
As far as Pie goes, that sounds like a whole lot of conjecture. AZ Phil hangs around Fitch Park a lot and he seems to know what he’s talking about most of the time. But one time a caught him making a couple of errors and pointed it out to him, and his response was essentially to tell me to go to hell and who was I to use facts and evidence to question him. I haven’t posted on TCR since then. He doesn’t impress me as someone who really cares about whether or not something is true.

May I ask what the nature of those errors were? I haven't had a reason to question him as a source until hearing that.

It was a long time ago
but it had to do with baseball history. It wasn’t that they were grievous errors, it was that I politely pointed them out (even prefacing them by praising his work) and he got all huffy, nasty and said I didn’t know what I was talking about, even though I cited my evidence with stuff on the web from SABR and elsewhere.
It wasn’t the errors, which anyone could have made. (One was a well-known baseball myth.) It was how he reacted to them that made me not want to deal with him anymore. I still read him though.

It's at The Cub Reporter.
If you need a link, here it is.
[P]art of the reason behind the Cubs decision to option the Pie man to Iowa in the first place was related to his becoming a bit of a “party animal” in Chicago, staying out until all hours of the night and then showing up at the ballpark not necessarily “ready to play” the next day.

If true...
... that’s really, really stupid of a talented young athlete who ought to be working hard to make it.

Sorry if
already disscussed but Wellington Castillo is representing the cubs in the Futures game. Soto last year and now Castillo, it is encouraging that the cubs are having success with young catching prospects
Life's a garden, dig it.

Good to see Samardjiza have a good start;
or a decent one anyway.
He better not string another 6 good ones in a row, or else the Cubs might add him to the bullpen even though he’s had no success there. Because of course, he’s a power arm.
My new life, my new world, and my beautiful daughter:
Tamia London Davis: Due date (8-11-08)!
I don't know
A lot of people think Samardzija’s MLB future is in the pen. It’s not so much just because he’s a power arm, but because he seems at his best when he can just let it all fly.

I'd agree with this.
I thought so when they first signed him, too.

Is that directed at me, Josh?
And oh, I was being sacrastic as far as Samardzija is concerned, with the Cubs thinking about Gallagher as a reliever.

I didn't either
the Cubs signed him this past off-season. He went to the Hiroshima Carp’s baseball academy in the Dominican Republic (like Fonzie, actually) and played briefly in Japan last year. (One game, I believe.)
Sure, he’s a legit prospect. Just don’t expect Greg Maddux out of him. He’s 24 years old, but age doesn’t matter as much for pitchers as it does for hitters. At least he’s listed on MiLB.com as 24—he’s listed at 22 elsewhere. Sounds like he got caught lying about his age.
Fastball with good control and a plus slider is what I’m hearing. An OK changeup.

I sat behind home plate yesterday...
Here’s my non-expert scouting evaluation of Samardzija’s day. His fastball was consistently around 91-92 on the radar gun of a scout sitting in front of me. He once got up to 94, but it wasn’t anything dazzling. His fastballs have decent movement on them.
I’m pretty sure he throws a splitter, though it could have just been a changeup. Whatever it was, it baffled Dallas McPherson, professional baseball’s homerun leader, and made him look really stupid.
He couldn’t get his slider or slurve or whatever it was in for a strike. It seemed like he was using it to set up his fastball, but I doubt he’s ready to throw this to major league batters. He walked 6 batters and got really lucky twice with double plays getting him out of pottentially big jams.
Anyway, I can’t say I watched much of the rest of the game, because for most of the game, I was pretty much chasing after and distracting two overly energized toddlers.
Help me Obi-ONEDEC. You're our only hope.
Thanks
that’s sort of different than what I’ve been hearing about Samardzija, which is that he throws hard but “straight.” But your report makes more sense with the pitching lines he’s been producing.
What’s encouraging is your description of his change-up. (I’m going to assume that was a change.) Developing a good off-speed pitch has been the Shark’s #1 priority. Maybe he’s done that.

With our injury riddled OF, why not call up Colvin or Pie?
I know they’re working on their swings, but defensively, our OF has been a mess with Patterson out in LF, and Murton… well… Murton is Murton.
At least Colvin or Pie could play a good CF, while shifting Jimmy Ballgame to LF vs a righty.
I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.
Updated on May 25, 2008
Colvin
is only hitting .240 in the Southern League. I don’t think a callup would help much.
Pie’s been battling a hand injury—but it sounds like he’s healthy again. We certainly could call him up.

Bad News
I thought this would be the best place to put it but it looks like Rhee is hurt and going on the Disabled List, here’s the link to the Baseball America article. I think it’s a freebie.
