Edmonds Diary!!11

The Cubs are 13-5 (.722) since signing edmonds, having gone from 1 game back of the d-bags for best record in NL at 24-16 . . .

to best record in the NL by 3 games over the phillies at 37-21.

Also during that time, edmonds is 10 for 35 for .286 / .324 / .543 and an OPS of .867,  eerily similar to his career 162-game averages of .285 / .377 / .526 / .903.

Thank you, Padres, for your benevolence.  And welcome, Jimmy Ballgame.

Can we all get behind this CUB now and let go of the past?

I honestly don't care that he was once a Cardinal

I only care that he isn’t the player that he once was.

This quote from Lous says it best...

“He’s doing a nice job,” Piniella said. “We had some patience with him, and it’s starting to pay off.”

More than what can be said about most of the people here who wanted him launched by now…

Give Lou credit.

I was one of those “launch him” people.

But he does appear to be coming around. I still think it’s too early to judge him “back”, but there are positive signs.

I neve wanted him signed.

And I still wonder where this patience was with Pie.

That said, I’m overjoyed that Edmonds is hitting well enough to help the Cubs win!

by Luis on Jun 3, 2008 7:40 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't twist my statement.

I just would have liked to see Lou be as patient with Pie as he’s been with Edmonds. I’m not making any sort of normative claim about objective standards of patience for a baseball manager. I’m simply stating what I would have liked to see happen and wondering, quite innocently, why it didn’t happen that way. I’m not trying to build a value system, but thanks for the wildly irrelevant question.

Pie had 63 AB's

Edmonds has 35 thus far (.286 .324 .543) If anything, Edmonds has more AB’s to go before making a decision if Pie’s 63 (.222 .286 .286) is to be used as any kind of a benchmark (which in reality, it shouldn’t).

by blackhawk24 on Jun 3, 2008 8:27 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sigh.

Pie was with the team for 38 games, of which he started 15 (39%), and was allowed to finish 11(28%) of those starts. His 63 AB’s in the 30 games in which appeared give him an average of 2.1 AB’s per game.

Edmonds has been with the Cubs for 18 games, of which he has started 9 (50%), and he has been allowed to complete all of his starts. His 35 AB’s in the 12 games in which he has appeared give him an average of 2.9 AB’s per game.

So, it would appear that Edmonds has indeed been granted more leeway than Pie to play through his struggles. Plus he’s been placed in a straight platoon, a situation that Pie never enjoyed.

Pie's future

I wonder if at this point his future is with another team.

I hope not. I really like the kid and think if everyone would lay off he’d come around.

But it’s obvious Lou has lost confidence in him and his talent is just being wasted in AAA.

I’m just wondering.

by AlabamaCubFan on Jun 3, 2008 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think

barring an injury to one of the OF’ers, and provided he continues to hit the way he has this past week or so, Pie will probably be called up sometime after the ASB. However, I don’t think he’s going to get another shot at the starting CF gig until next season. IMO, that ship has sailed for Lou.

Pie's problems at the plate

have nothing to do with the Cubs as a culture or organization. A doubt a change of scenery will make any difference. It has to do with bad hitting mechanics IMHO

Huh?

“And I still wonder where this patience was with Pie.”

That statement implies both that they should have had the same amount of patience with Pie and that that is what a good manager should have done.

by Luis on Jun 3, 2008 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, it implies I wish they had exercised more patience.

I’m not making some ought statement, because there’s no real standrard to appeal to as an objective basis. Simply stating a wish, nothing more, no need to push the point further.

I think they should have had more patience with Pie. The upside is almost infinitely better.

From our perspective it probably is

However, what goes on behind practices we do not see likely had determined their course of action.

We always speculate things based on our observations. Here its Pie not getting a chance. How do we really, really know they worked on his stance and stroke time and time again in practice only for him to swing half the time like Corey Patterson? Answer is, we don’t know.

Of course the upside is greater, but if he’s not producing, he’s not producing.

Edmonds is a low risk, low cost insurance policy while Pie works on things in AAA. It’s that simple.

I supported it with caution

thinking it was simply to get Pie a chance to work on things at AAA. If they caught lightning in a bottle, that’d be great. Well, it’s starting to lean a little in that direction. He got another big hit last night. At least one I know of when I wasn’t watching triple OT Stanley Cup hockey..

LSA.

With every sound hit, Edmonds buys himself a little more time to prove himself. And as long as he keeps buying, I don’t have a problem with the Cubs selling. I’m still a little sad, disappointed and confused about the Pie situation, but you can’t argue with success—and this team has continued to be successful with Jimmy B-Game on the field.

Ditto

It’s too early to tell, but siging Edmonds may be one of the moves that puts us over the top and on our way to the WS. It looks like Pie is starting to come out of his funk after being sent down and Edmonds is stroking the ball like we’re used to seeing. Pie is still the future and we want to win it all this year. As long as Pie keeps his head up and looks at the big picture, he’ll be fine and probably starting in CF next year. Edmonds was a low risk move and it looks like it’s working quite well.

I didn’t care if Edmonds was a Cardinal, I don’t care where anyone comes from, as long as they play hard and help us win ballgames.

I thought Edmonds was DONE too, but . . .

with his recent trend, i am thinking that I was wrong.

On another note: Is it time to see what this lineup could do with Dome in the 2nd spot and Edmonds 5th? I think we will be seeing this pretty soon, especially if Edmonds has a couple more games like his last few.

Complicating this is the fact that Dome is only 2 points higher than Theriot in OBP. But it is likely that Dome would see better pitches to hit if he were in front of Lee and Ramirez, thereby giving him a better chance to increase his OBP.

Plus, his taking of many pitches can help Lee in the batter’s box time the pitcher’s pitches. Also, gives the leadoff more chances to steal, although that wont be an issue unless Soriano gets his wheels under him.

Pie v. Edmonds

Count me among the people who thought we should have kept Pie, but is pleasantly surprised so far with Edmonds (although I think Pie is still stronger defensively).

One thing to note in debating the “patience” with which Lou treated these players – Pie is young with very little in the way of a track record, while Edmonds has been an All-Star caliber CFer and hitter. Lou might reasonably give a longer leash to a proven veteran player than he would to a rookie…..you might disagree with the tactic, but it is a sound tactic.

That being said, Pie is STILL young, and STILL has plenty of time to fix any flaws in his game and contribute to the Cubs, this year or next or down the line. I think he’ll be a VERY good player one day, and look forward to him roaming CF for years to come.

That’s logic lesson number one for BlueMike today.

Secondly, I’ve repeatedly stated Theriot is a valuable asset to this team; I just don’t think he should be starting. You can check my comment history if you wish, but then, that would be asking you to do some research and back up your blanket assertions and I’m not sure your ready for adult-level discourse yet.

Third, I trust Lou implicitly, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have and opinion about one of his moves, and express said opinion, when occasion arises. I just try to use facts and figures instead of bile and spleen, as you are wont to do.

Fourth, I was wrong about Hill getting screwed over, and I’ve said as much. He obviously needs to work out some kinks, and I’m confident he will.

Fifth, Felix has succeeded at evry level, given the opportunity to play. I’m confident he could have success at the ML level, because his minor league numbers mean much more to me than the your unsubstantiated rantings.

am I well equipped to comment on a major league stroke?

Calm down.

And, amazingly, you're still less blind than MDBNIU.

Nanika Ga Okoru!

Oh, and remember, folks: Alfonso Soriano is NOT batting leadoff. He's batting first.

I actually agree with you on this one.

Pie can’t hit MLB pitching…BECAUSE HE’S IN IOWA!!!

Exactly why those two are here now and were not here 3 months ago

Pie was deemed not ready for the majors. IMHO the time his bat spends in the hitting zone as a percentage of time of the entire swing is very, very low.

When (if) Pie is deemed ready, he’ll be back. For now, the platoon guy and the stopgap guy are working just fine.

Next problem please…say like figuring out how to get more [innings] out of the SP’s…

Faith in Pie - yea or nay?

Some of us think Pie would be producing real well had he been kept on the roster and some of us don’t feel that way. Surely, the Cubs are better off getting as much production as possible from their centerfielder.

I’m glad Edmonds has found his stroke and I hope this continues. The platoon should make his and Johnson’s hitting stats look as good as possible because each outfielder is going up against the handed pitching they matchup with best.

Pie has been hitting in the minors this week

coincidently around the same time Jimmy is.
