Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Roger Clemens?

I'm almost scared to bring up this subject but there have been reports that Roger Clemens is not done - I don't have an article to link at the moment, though it's on ESPN insider's rumor central.  Houston was the team cited as potentially re-signing him.

Do we have any interest?  Yes?  No?  Maybe so?

That brings up another question I asked a friend of mine - if given the choice between these two shamed superstars, who would you rather have, Bonds or Clemens?

Awww hell no…

Old. Busted. Facing Charges. Pederast? I think we’ll be ok with what we’ve got on board already.

That is, unless we have to shop for a new setup man after Marmol’s arm falls off in July.

No...

No contending team would be the least bit interested in Roger Clemens. Too much of a distraction, and certainly not performing well enough at this stage of his career to offset the drama.

And as for Barry or Roger? Neither.

Cubs Have No Interest

If the Cubs are going to go after a 350-game winner, it will be Greg Maddux. The Cubs may not even do that. Bonds or Clemens? Mussolini or Hitler? If I had to choose, I think Bonds would have slightly more value as a DH in the AL than Clemens would have as a pitcher. However, neither one will play in the majors again. It’s a moot point.

by memphiscub on Jun 3, 2008 11:53 AM CDT reply actions

No to both as well

However, if the Cubs were FORCED to sign one of them, I’d have to go with Clemens. Typically, I’d go with a fielder who can help the team every day as opposed to a pitcher who only has the chance to help every 5. But Bonds has become such a poor fielder that I’m not convinced that the runs he’d cost the team in the field would offset what he’d produce at the plate.

by ScottT on Jun 3, 2008 11:54 AM CDT reply actions

Hmmm...

Would I rather be kicked in the face, or kicked in the face and not play left field?

Seriously, neither. Even if we were in dire need of someone I wouldn’t want either of those two cancers. Thankfully, we don’t even need em.

what would have been your reaction had some asked Bonds, Clemens or Edmonds?

I think i actually would have said Edmonds.

The other two are such self absorbed, meat headed, steroid wash ups that come with way too much baggage anyway.

Calm down.

by Kinky Reggae on Jun 3, 2008 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions

None.

But if pressed, Edmonds hands down.

I'd probably have said "Edmonds," or possibly "none of the above"

At least Edmonds has a position, doesn’t have legal issues swirling about him, is cheap, and is under 40. Bonds is basically a DH and we already have a player at the only position Bonds can play. Clemens is probably still an upgrade over what we have now, but he won’t play for less than a few million per month, and he’ll be a huge media circus. And I’m not sure he’s THAT much of an upgrade considering he’s soon to turn 46.

That said, I wasn’t excited about Edmonds either. Until this past week, he had stunk royally. Everything he’d done up until the last few games had suggested he was done as a player. Hopefully the last three games aren’t just a flash in the pan and there’s really something left in his tank.

Your wanted in the comments section here to let us know how much we need Roger Clemens and to tell Jim Hendry to “just do it!”

I would rather Edmonds pitch then Clemems

Even, if he could still pitch , which he can’t he is walking media mess that
would be a disaster for the Cubs. If you don’t think our starting pitching is good enough
there will plenty better than a lying asshole to choose from. Think Maddux is too old or
he does not want to leave CA, go for Wolf, Burnett, Francis or any decent pitcher from
the teams that will be selling in a month or so. Cubs have pieces to trade if that is what
they want but no one will touch Clemens.
