I know I'm in the minority here

But he’s only given up 3 hits through 4 innings. I know control has been a problem but this isn’t the worst start of all time or anything.

I’m cautiously optimistic he can get us to the 6th.

by dbaltman on Jun 3, 2008 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions

    the problem is

the damage has all been his own doing. walking a pitcher that can’t hit, throwing over with Lee not covering, throwing down the RF line. walks, walks, walks.

by Shanghai Badger on Jun 3, 2008 10:59 PM CDT up reply actions

    You're right

But he has limited that damage. I hate seeing all of these walks as much as anyone else. But he hasn’t been as bad as you would think just by reading this board.

by dbaltman on Jun 3, 2008 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions

    True

But he has consistently been like this… which is why we have the short patience

by GoCubbies34 on Jun 3, 2008 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

    And I'm not

The world’s biggest Marquis apologist, but if he can get out of this inning, that will be 3 runs through 5. He’s grinding (sometimes with good results, sometimes not).

How many people on this board would have taken that at the start of this game?

by dbaltman on Jun 3, 2008 11:05 PM CDT up reply actions

If he can do that then great...

He really needs to make it to 6 though. But he just can’t make it that far.

by GoCubbies34 on Jun 3, 2008 11:06 PM CDT up reply actions

    without context, probably

I’d take that. But I have to look at the game as a whole. He’s simply not pitching well.

"We expect to win. We go out to win. So we're just living up to our own expectations." Derek Lee, 5/29/08

by drewishdrewid on Jun 3, 2008 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions

    Again, you are right

But only to a certain extent. Nobody expected him to give us 8 innings. Nobody honestly expected him to give us 8.

3 through 5 isn’t the end of the world. This is Marquis, not Z. At the end of the day, he didn’t have a great start, but it wasn’t a bad one. Again, it was a grind. Those happen.

Now lets bring in the ‘pen and close the door.

by dbaltman on Jun 3, 2008 11:10 PM CDT up reply actions

he walked FIVE guys. Including the pitcher.

three walks in one inning. I don’t see that as a good outing. If it was three through six, off a 2r HR and a RBI double, with one walk, that would be different.

"We expect to win. We go out to win. So we're just living up to our own expectations." Derek Lee, 5/29/08

by drewishdrewid on Jun 3, 2008 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I also have no defense on that

But he gave us a chance to win.

That has to count for something.

by dbaltman on Jun 3, 2008 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions

    did he?

or is our offense just that good?

"We expect to win. We go out to win. So we're just living up to our own expectations." Derek Lee, 5/29/08

by drewishdrewid on Jun 3, 2008 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions

well, gotta agree with dbalt on this one

3 runs in 5 innings is serviceable. not great, mind you. and I’m not convinced he’ll get thru the next inning

by Shanghai Badger on Jun 3, 2008 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

    Well

As of right now, he only gave up 3 through 5. I’m not trying to argue that its the best start of all time. but it puts us in the game.

Obviously the offense if very good right now, and 3 runs in the 6th clearly helps. However, Marquis has been grinding his way through this game. Never pretty, but thus far it has been effective.

by dbaltman on Jun 3, 2008 11:22 PM CDT up reply actions

    That being said

This inning makes me nervous. I think he’s at the end of his rope right now.

On what basis did Jim Hendry sign Jason Marquis? If you saw him on TV, he stunk. If you looked at his stats, he stunk. There was nothing you could see in Jason Marquis that didn’t tell you he stunk. The only thing I can figure is that Marquis’ agent was the Amazing Kreskin.
