Cubs vs Padres 6-3 Overflow #2

Cubs have taken the lead! Noo that isn't the date, it is the score!!  Wait it is the date too... Cubs winning 6-3.  Soto and Derosa both have HR.  Marquis is out of the game after a bunch of walks, 2 K, 3 ER, 1 Error, 1 balk, and 5 IP.  Oh he had a hit too.  7th inning...  I don't know what else to say.  But I need six more words so this should do it.

GO CUBS!!

He'll get the win but still another outing by a starter with too many walks,

too many pitches and too few innings. The Cubs do need another starter. Al’s wrong. It doesn’t matter who’s healthy or not on Cleveland, when the Indian management decides they aren’t going to win their division, he’s gone. He’s already turned down a bundle and they’re not going to want him to leave and get nothing in return.

This is one of several reasons I think pitcher wins are meaningless.

by eswan9 on Jun 4, 2008 12:38 AM CDT up reply actions

For the team, sure.

For Marquis? Not really. A balk, HBP and a throwing error on a pickoff throw? That’s just miserable.

by cwyers on Jun 4, 2008 12:40 AM CDT up reply actions

still the pitcher of record when we went ahead.

or something like that.

by halfblindcubbiegirl on Jun 4, 2008 12:38 AM CDT up reply actions

He gave us the innings we needed

And he kept us close.

I’m not saying it was Cy Young worthy. I’m just saying he minimized the damage. That had to mean something.

by dbaltman on Jun 4, 2008 12:44 AM CDT up reply actions

He didn't do ANYTHING.

He got bailed about by his fielders and his offense. Marquis pitched well enough to lose tonight, the rest of the team just wouldn’t let him.

by cwyers on Jun 4, 2008 12:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Well

You are right that he could have easily lost tonight. This clearly wasn’t his best stuff.

I’m just saying he found a way to grind through 5 innings, and he did so in a way that gave us a chance at a win.

Was there room improvement? Of course. Did he put the team in place to continue its streak? I think the answer is also “Of course.”

by dbaltman on Jun 4, 2008 12:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Look, Jason Marquis has simply one reason to justify his existance.

And it’s to eat innings. Nobody thinks he’s actually any good at preventing runs from scoring. Marquis, especially in a game like tonight when Lou really wanted to save the pen, can’t throw over 100 pitches in five innings and be considered to have done his job. His job tonight was to go six innings.

by cwyers on Jun 4, 2008 12:51 AM CDT up reply actions

And I'm not trying to say

That this was a great start.

I got started on this thread trying to defend him when people were saying he had a terrible start during the 3rd inning. I never said this was a great start.

I simply began this trying to say that he did better than a lot of people on this board were representing.

Was Marquis’ start incredible? No. Was his stuff unittable? Of course not. Did he give us a serviceable start that put us in a position to continue an incredible streak? I think the answer to this has to be “Yes.”

1969

As Al said the other day, this is what it felt like in 1969. The only question now is will this be a repeat performance of the 69 collapse in August and September, or will it be more like the dominance of the 1984 Detroit Tigers? We will just have to hope, and wait and see. There is still a long way to go, but ya gotta love this if you are a true Cubs fan.

Don't blow it boys!

Jason Marquis = extremely lucky today
Jason Marquis (3-3) won despite a rough outing, allowing three runs in five innings. Marquis walked five, hit a batter, committed a balk and allowed a run to score on a throwing error when he attempted to pick a runner off first base.

His boxscore line tells nothing about how terrible he looked today…it’s like he just missed the Bizarro Cycle for pitchers – balk, hbp, errors, and coughing up grand slams).

Quick Observation:

That makes 5 consecutive wins with a recorded save by the Cubs. 4 by Woody and Marmol picked up 1 when Kerry was unavailable. It’s really remarkable to keep winning 1-3 run ballgames like this. I freakin’ love it.
